So I saw that St. John's won this years Great Alaska Shootout last week.
Am I the only one that didnt hear a single peep about this tournament or has it just falling of the radar as far as Thanksgiving tournaments go?
In this years field:
Drake
Southern Utah
Ball State
Arizona State
Houston Baptist
Weber State
Alaksa Anchorage
Man, look at that field. No wonder you did not hear much about it.
Not exactly a top 50 list!
The great alaskan shootout used to draw some pretty big names. I remember duke used to go up there almost every other year. A lot of the new upstart tournaments, with more accessible locations have really hurt the great alaskan shootout.
We have a banner.
At least they got it back to an 8-team field this year. Was only a 6-team field last year. Yes, it's fallen off tremendously. The lack of an ESPN presence certainly hasn't helped, as the better teams don't get that level of exposure. The TV coverage this year was like watching a game from 25 or 30 years ago on TV. Obviously the change that allowed anyone to host an exempt tournament, not just teams outside the lower 48 hurt, which made Maui and Alaska something truly special back in the day. But in summary, yes, it's fallen off a lot since MU won it in '05 (the Ryan Amaroso show) and fallen off a lot more than a lot since MU won it in Wade's debut in '01.
Wasn't Duke up there alot when Trajan Langdon was on the team? I think he was the Alaskan native, I'm probably wrong on that.

Pretty sure I remember seeing Langdon playing in it every year, though that's probably not exactly true. Duke used to go there every few years.

If you go on their website (well actually Alaska Anchorage's website), http://www.goseawolves.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=13400&SPID=6647&SPSID=61085 (http://www.goseawolves.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=13400&SPID=6647&SPSID=61085), they have Wade as the left background image.
They lost their ESPN contract. MU will not be back.
With the proliferation of tournaments, this one is too far away for people to care about...including ESPN.
They should just rename it "Sarah Palin's Great Alaska Shootout".

Might be dangerous...if that were the name, my guess is the players would show up with hunting rifles.

Langdon and Boozer were Alaska natives. So is Derrick Wilson!
They f'ed up. Shoulda included Utah State in the field instead of Southern Utah. Legendary coaches can make a tournament.
