Got to call it like I see it. Hate ripping the kid, but he just makes more boneheaded mistakes than anyone. Buzz needs to put Jones in the game or somebody else I don't care. Buycks had no business playing that 2nd half. Needs to ride the bench until he can be more dependable.
When we get zoned - remove Buycks and insert J. Jones. At least he can shoot!
It would have helped to have Fulce available or a fully healthy Gardner. I don't know why EWill didn't get in instead of Vander when we were getting dominated on the boards.
Buycks makes the worst decisions of anyone on the entire team. He's a chucker.
Did Erik Williams even see the floor in Kansas City? With the way were (not) rebounding tonight I cannot believe he didn't earn a minute...or Buzz wouldn't give him shot....ridiculous.
Williams is obviously still a liability on defense. I have been as big a defender of Buycks as anyone, but it's not just his turnovers...it's the timing of his turnovers. They always seem to occur when we are pushing our way back into the game and need a good possession.
Would have liked to see Williams get some minutes as has been stated. Williams actually seems to have a pretty good shooting stroke and 3-ball..certainly better than Vander...but not quite sure how you get Williams on the floor??
Otule played decent against Sacre..Sacre is no stiff..the problem we got into is we needed to have our "best" shooters on the floor against their zone..which made us go with a 3 guard lineup..so we usually only had Jimmy and Jae..or Jimmy and Otule on the floor for rebounds.
Though we haven't seen it thus far...Buycks improved his 3 point shooting over the summer..and probably is the teams 2nd best 3 point shooter...which is why I think he got as many minutes as he did..even though he was really bad tonight...
The problem with the zone was Marquette's. They believed the only way to beat it was to chuck up three pointers. Bobby Knight commented on Marquette's pathetic attack of the zone numerous times. With a small lineup Marquette got pounded on the offensive boards.
Actually after the first 10 minutes or so Mu did extrmely well against the zone.. we score very effetively for a while the problem was Gonzaga was getting 1..2...3...4...5....6 offensive rebounds per possesion and we were only able to match them. We struggled against the zone early but once Butler and Djo started attacking the gaps we did fine and they actually were forced to go back man to man.
First time Mu had seen a zone versus a high major team this year so the struggles were to be expected...hit a few threes and things seem rosy too.
I don't care what Buycks does in the summer or in practice shooting the 3. If he can't make them in a game, it doesn't matter. And his history says he can't do it. How long do we go into the year exploring this? Thirty two unproductive minutes tonight from him was way too much.
Our defense sucked tonight all around. To say EW would have made it worse seems to be an incorrect statement. Two games in two nights and no minutes. I can understand not playing against Duke. Not sure I understand given this performance tonight.
My problem with Buycks is that he's a senior. Much like everyone (including myself) got on Coobie last year, he had a few great games, but the reward for his development was short lived because he was a senior. I think he needs to play some minutes this year, but I'd rather see Vander, Junior and DJO get the majority of the minutes at guard. A two guard line-up might be needed the way we rebounded tonight!
Not seeing Erik Williams the last two nights was a head scratcher. Especially with Fulce being hurt. If Fulce was high flying on the court it would of been different, but that wasn't the case. Otule and Gardner lacked the agility to stay with the fleet footed Gonzaga and Duke front lines.
Buycks is just not a point guard...pure and simple. Watching him in person you can see he has talent and there is a place for him...just not running the offense. He also does not have a pure stroke for the 3-ball (imo...not a bad shot but not one like you see from Singler who everytime he is open you know he is drilling it). He could be good in transition and create his shots off the ball or with the ball but the turnovers and decision-making, even though he has better ball-handling skills than I anticipated, are liabilities. I am impressed with Junior as a true point guard...let the kid run with it. I bet by Big East play, with increased playing time and confidence, he will be a major distributor, scorer and key contributer to our success.
Buycks should be the 1st or 2nd guy off the bench and should get no more than 20 minutes a game. I understand he has a lot of athletic ability, but in my opinion he does not play within the system. I wasn't a fan of his last year and after watching the last two games I'm still not a fan of his this year.
Interestingly, outside of Butler (1:0), Buycks had the best A/TO ratio on the team last night (6:4).
The problem is that he isn't a pure PG...but Junior isn't yet ready to be that person either. He played 25 minutes last night and had only one assist. (And Reggie played 1 minute and had a really dumb turnover.)

Wrong---Cadougan is more ready than Bucyks
The problem willie is that we have no perfect solution at PG. We have a guy that handles the ball well (JC) but looked lost against the zone due to lack of experience, or a guy who makes plays (DB) but also turns the ball over a lot. If you think Cadougan should start over Buycks, well fine...I actually agree with that. However, don't expect that this would magically kick start the offense because yesterday he really didn't do much.
I would actually put Buycks and JC in the backcourt and have Crowder and Vander as the first two off the bench.

Crowder needs to start. Saw some very good things out of him last night - deflections, slap steals, etc....but he was getting abused on the boards.
Buycks is not a PG. He makes a lot of moves with the ball and look flashy, but literally get him NOWHERE on the floor. I like his athleticism and he does a pretty good job at finishing at the hoop, but he is just NOT a point guard. As time progresses, Junior will be seeing more of that role (I hope). I think Buycks is the perfect 6th/7th man to come off the bench and give the team a lift.
I think it kills us when we have Junior and Vander in at the same time. Neither of the two have proven they can score, and sometime I feel like we are playing 3 on 5 when we are on offense. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing either player, but thats just the feeling I get. However, as the year goes on and guys start(keep) realizing their roles, I think that problem will go completely out the window.
Buyckes made mistakes, but we lost the game because of rebounding. Otule los the rebound on the missed free throw allowing Gonzaga to score on an offensive rebound. Then Otule had a chance to secure an offensive rebound and did not get it. Gardner did not block out and Gonzaga got the rebound, scored and he fouled him for a three point play. There were many other times Gonzaga got offensive rebounds. I do not think we played well against the zone, especially in the first half. We took several shots with the clock winding down. The team did not have a clue what to do against the zone. The whole offense was based on only shooting when there was no time left.
Buycks is a turnover machine and should relinquish his starting position. I don't know what Buzz sees in this guy... He plays great against lower competition but when the level of play steps up he's no where to be seen.

Why are we so obsessed over who starts? Crowder was near the top in minutes coming off the bench. He is going to get plenty of playing time.
Because we need someone that can lead the team at the point.
Because being a starter adds to your confidence and stability.
