we pass the ball around the perimeter all game...afraid to step up and take a shot

and try to come back in the fleecing minutes

reminds me of last year and all the close games we lost

hope we can learn from this ...Go warriors!

Gonzaga played a good zone, and we had no way of breaking it for long stretches.

its "fleeting" moments

reminds me of last year a bit as well.

ummm...sorry about the "fleecing" comment.....MU tends to make me drink in the final minutes  :)

I am at the CBE.  The consensus in my section, MU fans, K State & GU alike...Byucks sucks.  What's his position again?  Not PG.  Give that to Coudugan.  If the game plan calls for excessive turn overs, missed shots and poor help D then he's our guy.

Team looked bad overall.  We missed Joe True!

I don't know...

Last year after most of our close losses I was left thinking that our team played their hearts out to almost eke out a win against a far superior opponent.

This year I am left thinking we're not playing that well and I don't feel that great about how we're going about our business.  Lots of carelessness and sloppy play.

Big difference to me.

I agree..though some of those rebounds..the ball just really didn't bounce our way...but overall we got destroyed on the boards - 16 offensive rebounds.  Ouch.

Sloppy play and poor shot selection.  And is it me or can this team just not capitalize?  It seemed like for every turnover they forced or nice defensive stand they have, they'd go to the other end and turn the ball over or commit an offensive foul.  I'm hoping this is just an inexperience thing and they'll pick up their game as the season goes on but it's frustrating to see against quality opponents when you have a chance to make a statement.

Just landed

Bummer we didn't pull it out.

Need a traditional shooter and that's no joke as much as people try to make it one.

We will face zones a lot this year.  He'll, even Bo might break down and do it.

will be a VERY long year with teams playing the zone against us...

Or we just need DJO to start making shots. His first half against Duke cost us that game. If he makes shots, not only do we get the bonus of more points, but it slows them down in transition. His missed three's led to long rebounds that gave them the chance to get easy points. Tonight he was better, but when we needed the key shots, he wasn't there to deliver. Last year he was the assassin, this year he's just another guy :(

I think the word traditional is a joke.  Like we'd pass up on a great shooter that can also attack the rim, for someone who was an equal shooter, but cannot attack the rim?  DJO filled it up last year, if he was doing so this year we probably wouldn't have a loss yet.

This is just what I was thinking watching this one. There is not a game I can remember last year, win or lose, that I didn't think MU just plain played harder than the other team. I thought they played harder than any team in the country last year. I certainly did not see that tonight.

They clearly are not in sync offensively, but I think that will come. More importantly, I see a lot of talent, and a lot of youth. I do not see much in the way of leadership or toughness. Butler and Crowder are the closest thing we have at the moment. Right now, they just need to learn how to play (and I believe they will).

Steve Novak didn't attack the rim.  Many guards don't, but I don't think Buzz would recruit a pure shooter...just not what he wants on the team IMO.

It's not just DJO even though his perimeter shooting will be vital this year. Crowder was a good shooter in JC and Buycks has some ability to hit from the outside. Butler has a solid jumper also, but he really needs to be more selfish on the offensive end. He to skilled and efficient for as deferential as he tends to be.

I hate myself for saying it, but christopherson and mbakwe would look mighty good on this team. Outside shooting and rebounding would have won us this game.

Frustrating is all I can say.

Otule has a couple plays where he demands the ball in the post and scores easily. Then he gets bitched around on the defensive glass and gives up stupid fouls coming up to guard on a switch.

DJO just can't seem to find it.  It's gotta be in his head, I refuse to believe someone who shot the 3 like that last year can totally forget how this year, although 3's can be contagious and last year's team shot the ball much better.

Buycks... if he can't find the outside shot and stretch the floor, he has no purpose.  He's been a turnover machine and he's not making up for it.

Watching them try and break a zone was horrendous.  Jimmy is the perfect player to run the zone break at the free throw line, and I think he'll grow into that role like Lazar did 2 years ago, but he needs someone who can knock down 1 of every 3 open shots on the perimeter... 1 in 3 is all I ask.

Gonzaga did not play well at all.  It sucks to lose like that.

Tough loss and if we can't learn how to break a zone defense it will be a long year. Also, Buzz or someone needs to start pulling Buycks aside in practice and every time he makes a bone headed play during a practice have him running laps or doing push ups.

Although I won't place the loss squarely on his shoulders, he did a good job of killing key momentum swings we had going during the game. The one that sticks out most to me occurred in the last 10 minutes of the game when we made our first run at Gonzaga. Down 5 and on a 3 on 1 fast break instead of dishing the ball to Butler or the other trailer for an easy 2 points he decides to drive the lane instead and gets called for a stupid, and eventually costly charging foul. I say costly because Gonzaga scored the next 4 points and pushed their lead back up to 9 negating any momentum we had.

Another moment that sticks in my head is the horrible shot he threw up before the half. With 9 seconds on the clock, instead of trying to drive the ball and either a) kick it out or b) attack the basket he chucks up a 3 point shot while falling away from the basket from near the half court line.

Good grief, you would think this is a board about the Minnesota Vikings or something. The reality is the following:

1) We are six games into the year and two of the games have been against very good, experienced basketball teams.

2) Our team is mostly "freshmen." Vander, Gardiner, Reggie Smith are all freshmen. JUnior and Otule are de facto freshmen. Crowder might as well be a freshman coming from junior college and for all the minutes he played prior to this year, Erik Williams also is a freshman. That leave Buycks, this year's version of Bernard Toone (Lots of talent, just can't find it yet), Jimmy Butler and the injured/inconsistent Joe Fulce. The lesson: they are and will make freshmen mistakes.

3) To stay in the game with Duke given Item 2 aint all bad. I've said before Warriors don't settle for second and we should not. But c'mon, this is a talented and inexperienced ball club.

4) I think we have read too many of our team's press clippings. We have a ways to go yet gang.

5) These are not pro athletes. As much as we're all irrationally in love with Marquette basketball, these are 18 to 22 year old kids who love the game and are playing for love and hopefully an education. Let's treat them that way.

total of 10 TO on the game for Marquette, I"ll take that stat anytime

rebounding was the back breaker IMO

Agree with this completely.  Our shortcomings are youth and inexperience more than anything else.

Amen brother.  This team will be playing its best basketball in February.  You can't judge a young team by how it plays in November.  I hope none of you are managers responsible for developing young talent.

Most of these guys are young and deserve the benefit of the doubt due to inexperience.
DJO - missing shots, in a funk, most are half way down and then out.  Thinking too much.  Will be OK.
Then there's Buycks - he's a senior and just flat out plays with his head up his a**.  Selfish, street ball player, low bball IQ, boneheaded decisions, horrible in the half court, not a PG, bottom level SG (in comparison with other BE teams).  I hope Buzz will cut his minutes and reel in his play.

Agreed, more or less. Doesn't make it less frustrating, though.  Inexperience or no, these players have been facing zones since middle school. Shouldn't be that inept against a zone.
