Really struggling against the zone. And they are killing us from deep we have to improve the perimeter D
Title: Re: Zags. In game chatter
Post by: Shanunu on November 23, 2010, 07:35:06 PM
It looks like nobody wants to try and initiate any offense. We're just passing around the perimeter expecting open looks to come to us. We need to be much more aggressive.

Don't understand why Buzz didn't call time out earlier than the 1:45 mark of the first half. Gonzaga went on quite a run before that TO.

Title: Re: Zags. In game chatter
Post by: ChicosBailBonds on November 23, 2010, 07:37:25 PM
I'll stick to what I said the other day....every team should zone us to death this year because we likely don't have an answer.  Ugly

Hopefully second half is better but when you don't shoot well from deep and do not attack the zone, that is a problem.

Halftime adjustments should be coming
Title: Re: Zags. In game chatter
Post by: Daniel on November 23, 2010, 07:37:36 PM
We need to hit 2 or 3 3s to break up that zone, or attack and drive and hope for a foul - tho they aren't calling many inside ont he Zags seems.  The zone is why we are losing - great call by them.  Every team will play zone against us if we don;t show we can crack it.

Let's GO MARQUETTE!!

I hope Jamail gets some play. He looked pure. Unless practices have shown otherwise...

Post by: romey on November 23, 2010, 07:39:03 PM
as knight said - we need to attack the seams - we just keep passing around the perimeter.  As stated above, it's like we're waiting for a shot to come to us.

No defense.  No shooters.   DJO playing like a kitten, Vander isn't very good at this stage.
Title: Re: Zags. In game chatter
Post by: nyg on November 23, 2010, 07:42:19 PM
MU is 10 for 29 from field (34%).

Gonzaga is shooting 62%.  Gray is insane from 3 and he had 2 fouls on him for like 13 minutes.

That zone destroyed MU. BE teams are watching and going, mmmmmmmmm

That is two games in a row in which MU had the ball with 10 seconds left and throw up a 35 footer, this time by Buycks.  Not good.

Reggie Smith came in, threw ball away after 30 seconds resulting in 3 pointer by Gray.

DJO and Buycks have do what Gray did in first half to survive.

Buzz has to strongly tell that whoever is guarding Gray, that guy can't continue to leave Gray to double on another Zags player. The double team simply isn't worth it if the result can be a kick out to a wide open three for Gray.

Gray is their main offensive weapon and he's averaging nearly 7 three point attempts a game and tonight he's already taken 9 of them with 5 makes. When he has the ball, let him drive if he wants, but don't fall for the jab step and then pull up for three move either.

It always amazes me how often basketball players will play off a guy drilling a bunch of threes instead of staying close on that guy at all times.

I agree with Chico's here.  They have the break to figure it out.  I expect a lot more "old school" (see: last year) Marquette bball with the penetration and kick out.  If only we actually made those threes...

I went by the yahoo box score which says 5-9 from three for Gray.

Either way, whoever is guarding him needs to stop playing off him or doubling which leads to a kick out three.

That is the 9th time in 6 games that DJO did that and it costs us points, a foul and the ball.  Really, he either has ZERO court vision or he is a ball hog.  Wither way, I'd sit him down and not play him until he learns how to play.  That really sucks.

Seems like we should be getting more offensive rebounds versus this zone.  We are not crashing the boards well enough.  Not sure if Buzz is worried about the transition defense so we are not crashing aggresively.  We have maybe one offensive board versus this zone.

Williams needs to grow a pair bench buycks.  He's a liability he can't be any worse then the freshman.  Finally if they can box out . . . then this team might have a chance against good competition.

Gonzaga is garbage this year. That was a bad loss. Gardner isn't healthy either.

The way they came back... I am proud of them... can't beat longer arms under the basket. It will be a long year
Not sure I agree...seemed like a total lack of urgency for long periods of time.  Poor shooting getting in their heads?

No moral victories this week.  0-2 in KC is not a good omen for the season.  They had so many chances to get back in the game in the second half, but decided to give the Zags bunnies off offensive rebounds.  We really should have won this game tonight.  JB needed to show up about 10 minutes earlier.  Sooooooooooooooo frustrated.

williams better tear into the team in the locker room and not do any baseball analogies this time.  They played poorly plain and simple.  We should have the video to prove it in a few days!

Your nobody till you beat somebody and this team hasn't beaten anybody. . .

I really hate to pile on, but Buycks was just horrid these past two games.  In consecutive possessions he lost Arop on a backdoor alley oop, gave up 2 straight offensive rebound putbacks to Arop by not boxing out, got a stupid offensive foul called on him, then botched a 3 on 2 fast break with a gator-armed floater.  It really took the wind out of any sails we had for a while.  Then add the awful possession to close out the first half and the bricked wide open three to tie at the end and it really couldn't have gone much worse for him.  DJ-O should have been in the game with Cadougan instead of Buycks in that second half stretch.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
My heart is pounding, and I am really peeved with Buycks and DJO for the stupid non-plays they didn;t make.  But it was a team effort - the team is responsible - everyone could have played a lot better.  That's it - I need to blow off some steam......

disappointing on many levels.  JC played better than I expected, tho.  Where was Butler for most of the 2nd half?  Can't crack the zone. Not good.
