Who was it the other day here that said Vanderbilt = Providence?

LOL

Looks like North Carolina was overated once again this year.  Two straight losses to unranked teams.  I know they didn't lose to the little sister's of the poor, yet there is no excuse to lose back to back games to unranked opponents when you are the #8 team in the country. Right now it looks as if Roy will have his work cut out for him again this year.  Time will tell.

If Vandy can beat #8 the Warriors can beat #1!

Chicos,

It was me and I explained it.

The reference was not in terms of ability.  Rather, the initial poster indicated that West Va was playing against Providence.  I wrote Providence = Vandy meaning replace Providence with Vandy in the initial poster's statement because West Va was playing Vandy, not playing Providence.

Harrison Barnes, 1st team AA before he even laced up his sneakers at the collegiate level, improved to 4-12 vs Vandy after going 0-13 versus Minny. Could ol' Roy drastically underachieve with a roster of McDonald AA's again this year?

No. No.  As North Carolina fans explained last year there is a dearth of talent plus they have injuries.  Don't let that roster full of Top 50 recruits fool you.

I was amazed that these so-called experts could nominate a high school senior who never played at the collegiate level as a pre-season All American.  What, there were NO OTHER capable big men at the college level!?!  Plus, now Barnes ends up with a target on his back all year.

Agree completely. A freshman really shouldn't be picked preseason All-American, All Conference, or All-anything. How can you give out an award based solely on hype? There are 300+ Division I institutions, surely there are enough returning players to provide a big enough pool to give these awards to.

i think they have to include freshman, otherwise there is no reason to do the lists at all. at a time of one and dones and with the nba pillaging the top ncaa talent every year, to not include freshman wouldn't even be an attempt at accurate prediction.  the top talents just aren't there into their junior and senior years anymore.

Kudos to Vandy but THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON ON EARTH TO JUSTIFY NORTH CAROLINA BEING RANKED #8

This is a team that was an absolute embarrassment last year. They couldn't even fill up their own arena by the middle of the ACC season. And then ESPN ranks them WAAAAY too high just for being North Carolina.

I mean they also lost to Minnesota. They're 2-2 right now

Right.  Regardless of whether Barnes deserved it, the days of disregarding freshmen simply because they are freshmen are gone.  Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, Michael Beasley and John Wall were all first team All-Americans as freshmen.

Those four all deserved to be first team All-Americans, and they were...at the END of the season. I think people are referring to the hype around someone who has never played an NCAA game. There are undoubtedly enough returning players to put together a strong preseason list. If a freshman shows throughout the season that he deserves it, put him on the "real" list at the end of the season. Don't just follow the hype (and don't put even more pressure on the guy), but certainly reward performance.

It's not solely on hype.  The people who picked, I am sure, have seen him play more than the past two games.  They have also seen other freshman play and progress in their careers more than we have.

The kid can flat out play.  He will be one of the best players in the country by the end of the year.  Burrow makes a great point, look at the history of freshman that have been AA's.  How do you not pick one?  Before these kids were going pro, now they play one year of college bball or go over seas.  To discount them because they are freshman despite skill sets, athleticism and basketball intelligence being far superior would be the true outrage.

If he doesn't do anything throughout the year you can lambaste me; however, I highly doubt that will occur.

Simple reason. Vitale is an ACC jock sniffer. Duke and UNC are his butt boy teams.

MN is going to be tough this year....as much as I hate to admit it, Mbakwe is a beast, and they have Sampson at center with some athletic wings and guards.

The Golden Gophers are the real deal and will soon be ranked.

UNC might be #8 - but only if Minnesota is #1 and Vanderbilt is #2.
