MU announces Wilson signing
MU has announced the signing of Derrick Wilson.

Glad to see this one nailed down, the signing should silence anyone thinking this will end up like Newbill's situation did. Also glad to read that it should cap our recruiting for the time being. Hopefully that opens us up for someone like God's Gift in the Spring period.

Agree 100%.

*for the record, I'm not predicting a "Newbill", just sayin' I don't think we can slam the door on anything until Wilsom comes here and plays.
A couple of thoughts...
Buzz is quoted that MU has been recruiting DWil for awhile. Intersting that I don't believe his name was mentioned, outside of a few lists, prior to his official visit during Halloween weekend. Buzz does play things close to the vest.
The next one is this quote: "It's also expected to cap the Golden Eagles' 2011-'12 recruiting class for the time being, even though Williams still has one more scholarship at his disposal."
So we are waiting until Spring now.

Why? Newbill signed his NLI.

There is an ESPN insider article that talks about how Buzz has been in on Wilson since last spring, and how he was one of the few coaches who stuck with him this summer when he was playing out of position and his numbers dropped. I really feel like this was a high upside pickup, much like reggie smith last year.

Give it up 2002. What is your motivation in making such a statement?

I only make this statement because Wilson signing doesn't guarantee anything, and a lot can happen in a year. That is not meant as a slam on MU or Buzz. That's just factual. We've seen it at a lot of different schools.
I'm not saying we shouldn't be excited, I'm excited.
I'm just saying that a statement like:
"the signing should silence anyone thinking this will end up like Newbill's situation did." is misguided.
That's accurate, right?

Really? You guys are offended by that?

Yes..what I bolded above and what the original poster wrote is "misguided," per se. That said, given your history and views on things...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see through your insinuation. I am continually baffled by fans such as yourselves and others - who are "fans" of a program" that seemingly want to stir the pot, and be a moral police of sorts, and imply the worst about OUR coaching staff and its recruiting policies.
It gets to the point where it's like: Go find a high major program that doesn't oversign and doesn't ever have transfers, that wins consistently, graduates 90% of its players, has NO major off court conduct issues, and by and large turns out good kids in society.
This is just high major basketball 101. It happened with Crean, it happened with Buzz. That said, I will be HIGHLY surprised if you see another Newbill type situation where it APPEARS to be a straight up exchange of one kid for another. We may see a transfer at some point..but doubt you see another Newbill situation...and to imply as much is just wrong.

Some guys will bitch about a free steak dinner or a bit of teeth during oral.

I think there is some mis-communication here. I've never claimed that over-signing doesn't happen elsewhere. I even wrote "We've seen it at a lot of different schools" in my post. I'm not claiming that it's going to happen again. I'm just saying that a "signature" really doesn't mean a thing in modern college hoops. That's just life.
I think you are reading far too much into this.
Hmm...I didn't think Newbill ever signed his NLI, merely that it stayed as a commit. Guess not.
Buzz stayed on this kid all summer when other coaches were cooling on him because he sacrificed his own game and stats to play inside on his AAU team when other guards wouldn't. Look at his high school numbers. He is a stat sheet filler. This is the kind of leader, warrior, citizen, student we want at MU. Newbill....jeesh. Two things. When Brad Forster started communicating with him and his handlers, didn't this constitute an NCAA violation? Even though it wasn't really hashed through, wouldn't he have been ineligible if he came to MU after that kind of contact with an alum? Regardless, at worst, I am going to chalk that up as a learning experience for Buzz and do not anticipate him repeating that situation.
Power to the Tower!
Did I miss something? What did D-Wil do to earn a comparison to Newbill? Has he asked for his release already?
