Derrick Wilson commits to MU
Written by: tkraft212@gmail.com (Tim Kraft)
Derrick Wilson, a 6-foot-1 point guard out of the Hotchkiss School (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotchkiss_School) in Lakeville, CT, committed to Buzz Williams and Marquette on Monday. Wilson was also targeted by Georgia Tech and Big East rival Notre Dame.
He’s a 3-star recruit on Scout with a grade of 90 and is listed as the #28 point guard in the nation for the 2011 class. From every report, it appears that Wilson is a strong, athletic guard who can get in the lane and create for those around him. He's also given a lot of credit for being a great rebounder for his position.
Here’s a GothamHoops interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGvzN9eLsf0) with Wilson from June 13, 2010. Note: Marquette was not one of the schools he mentions...
Prepstars.com also has a short clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQKyoTSKMrc&feature=related) on Wilson.
It appears Wilson is not only a standout 2-sport athlete (basketball and football), but performs well in the classroom, too.
In the Prepstars video, it says Wilson is “a strong student at a great prep school, his academics offer another selling point for college programs.â€
D-Wil (it'll catch on) will join an already strong backcourt and it’s hard to tell what his role will be on next year’s team, considering the guard situation is still a toss-up for the current 2010-’11 season. Although it’s early, he’ll be competing with the likes of Cadougan, Smith, DJO, and Vander for playing time come next season.
Derek Wilson joins Juan Anderson in the 2011 freshman class, which leaves one open scholarship for Buzz come next season. Oregon transfer Jamil Wilson will also gain eligbility in 2011 as a redshirt sophomore.
Welcome to Marquette, Derrick!

HMMMMM. I see a big logjam at PG next year--or perhaps we will go back to 3 guard lineup with two points in there.

Between who? Wilson is more of a combo guard. Also, much like Cubillan, Reggie Smith is more of a SG than a PG. Just because a guard is short, that doesn't mean he's a PG.
Sure hope he is a great shooter although it doesn't say that. Otherwise I can't see where Derrick fills a need. Also for anyone who thought the Dave Singleton was likely to become a full 3 year scholarship player this seems to make that pretty unlikely.
Oh well, maybe we'll become the first D 1 team to use a line up of 5 point guards. They'd be very difficult to press but might have a tough time rebounding ;D
Hopefully this guy will help, but I start to get concerns on all the Guards we will have: Blue, DJO, Caddy, Smith, Singleton, now DWil, and Jones who seems like a wing.
Buzz will have tough times keeping all these guys happy.
You know DJO will take 35 minutes a game next year, which only leaves 45 minutes to split between the rest. Blue will need major minutes next year, so somebody will be unhappy. Hopefully Buzz can manage it!
Only way logjam clears is if DJO goes pro after this year--and I don't want that. We need to keep him for his Sr. year.

The minimalist/scarcity feelings you express aren't shocking...instead of looking at this as an acquisition of abundance, you trumpet possible malcontents/chemistry issues. Why? Buzz is building an ELITE program at MU, that actually lands kids even though there is a lot of competition and depth at their position...because kids can clearly see Buzz has "it," and will and is able to get the most out of players athletically and academically.
More than likely Wilson has to sit his freshman and sophomore years...not the end of the world and not likely with a kid of this character to create problems. The best players will distinguish themselves and get the PT. Celebrate the depth we now have on the team...please don't go get all paranoid and worry about transfers and roster issues.

Not sure Buzz has to worry about keeping them happy. I think he extends an offer to a kid like this and says, "if you're good enough you'll play." If he doesn't pan out, he'll go play at lower level.

Not too mention, people are forgetting that EVERY roster has quality players that simply don't see the floor. We're constantly talking about the depth of our rotation, odds are we're never going to roll 12 deep...no one is.
So if this kid is intrigued by the opportunity to come in and compete every day in practice with an already highly regarded backcourt, kudos to D-Wil...I have a great deal of respect for that mentality.
Sure, we don't get "bigger", but we're bringing in high quality players and individuals who will help continue to push each other to be better players and men...I don't see a problem with that, at all...
Now bring Bruenig or another player with good size into the mix and we have a very well-rounded 2011 class on the heels of two consecutive, nationally ranked, recruiting classes

Jones seems like he'll play the Butler swing role, likely competing for time moreso with Wilson and Anderson. We'll also have Crowder and Williams competing for time up front. So that's five scholarship guards, five scholarship forwards, and two scholarship centers (Gardner and Otule) with one schollie left. Seems pretty balanced to me ?-(
Hopefully DJO plays 35 mins/game and Blue gets to 30 mins/game in 2011-12. If we have NBA caliber studs, their backups are not as much of a problem. Also, if Blue and DJO can get to NBA caliber playing, then the three guard offense is fine with me, leaving us a ton of depth up front.

Why 45? Buzz uses three guard lineups all the time. My guess is that we will see all three of the above at certain times, and possibily only one of the above at others.
And as others have mentioned, DWil only overlaps DJO one year and JC two years. He may get spot play his first couple of years like many underclassmen do.
Maybe by signing Wilson, Buzz is preparing for DJO to go pro after this year. That would definitely create more space for a guard on the team. Maybe Buzz knows more about DJO's status than we all do, and by that, I mean he does
Buzz has been recruiting, Faust, Deangelo Harrison for 6 Mos. He was always planning on bringing in a guard. Having 5 guards and 8, 3,4,5, is pretty typical 13 man roster.

I'm not saying DJO won't go pro after this year, maybe he will, but I think this line of thinking is simply silly. If DJO is so good that he goes pro, do we really think a freshman guard will be the difference maker that Buzz is hinging his season on? That's ludicrous! Just look at the classes and all this is is another case of adding players that make sense to balance the classes.
Next year, we will now have the following (with the 3 and 4 combined):
PG: Wilson (Fr), Smith (So), Cadougan (Jr)
SG: Blue (So), DJO (Sr)
FW: Anderson (Fr), Jones (So), Wilson (So), Williams (Jr), Crowder (Sr)
C: Gardner (So), Otule (Jr)
Why does adding another guard have to be a sign that Cadougan is going to fail or DJO is going to go pro? What is Buzz supposed to do? Sign 1-star prospects because we like the guys already on the roster? Hold scholarships open so once Blue, Smith, and Jones graduate we can bring in a monster 12-man recruiting class? This is just how recruiting works when you are building for long-term success. You bring in good guys every year. That doesn't push out the guys you currently have, or indicate that they are having troubles, you are just planning for the day when they graduate with the idea in mind that when guys leave, you have more players waiting in the wings who have a couple years in the system and are ready to pick up where the departed players left off.
Buzz signing another quality prospect isn't a sign that something is wrong, it's a sign that something is
RIGHT.
What has DJO shown that leads people to think he's NBA material either now or later? Getting drafted into the Association takes a little talent more than making your basic CYO team. Darius isn't nearly there yet, if ever.

Where did anybody say that if DJO goes pro, that Buzz will be hinging his season on DWil?
I simply said it would provide space for another solid guard to contribute. If DJO does go pro, it's a good thing that Buzz got another solid guard because depth could have become an issue if injuries struck again.

It just seems that this commit blindsided a lot of people. Whether DJO goes pro or not, it is always a good idea to add a guard in every class, especially one that can play the point. It's simple roster balance. I don't think this is a commit that needs any explaining.
But one thing that could use explaining...is this ESPN Insider article. Anyone want to share?

It really does not matter what he has shown or how good he is. There are plently of players that go pro and do not get drafted. It only matters what DJO wants to do.
Underclassmen guards under 6"3' drafted in the first round are SCARCE. From the previous 3 drafts the only players that that fit this criteria were:
~Eric Bledsoe, 2010
~Johnny Flynn, 2009
~Ty Lawson, 2009
~Eric Maynor, 2009
~Jeff Teague, 2009
~DJ Augustin, 2008
~Mario Chalmers, 2008
And all other than Bledsoe, these guys were PG's.
