However unlikely the said scenario is, it is still not outside the realm of possibilities if he cuts down on turnovers and can be more consistent. Look around the Big East this year; outside Fab Melo I don't see any locks for the lottery. Talent is down and the doors are wide open.

It just won't happen. DJO can be very very good but he is not gonna be player of the year, not even close. Maybe next year and that is a very very generous maybe.
I am getting really sick of the "underrated" or under valued" or "under the radar" articles all the time. What good Marquette player in recent memory hasn't been on one of those lists? Its just a cheap way to give some credit to the non-big program players because they know they don't give enough (if any) attention to those players and teams (especially in the pre-season when they barely acknowledge non main programs).

I pretty much agree. However, if we can finish 1st or 2nd in the Big East (which I VERY highly doubt) he might have a chance, provided he get some national attention (particularly at least one very big game performance on national TV) during such a run. Players of the year only come from teams that win their conference (almost...see Blake Griffin/Kevin Durant).

Still that would be a mountain for DJO. Realistically, this team won't be competeing for the championship, which will be a knock against him unless he's averaging Harangody numbers.

I don't see Marquette winning the championship, but I would say a top 4 finish is realistic. If DJO can put together complete games this year and up his scoring to 20 ppg, which I would say isn't at all impossible, he could very well get into the conversation. I still think he's a year away, but if all goes well, this year could be his opportunity.

I actually agree with you on this coming season, I just don't see how he could reach that level (although everyone here would obviously love it if he did). In 2011-2012 however I think he will be included in preseason BE POY talks and this team will be heading towards a top 3 finish.
DJO will be a stud this season, but POY in Big East likely will not happen unless we finish in top 3 or 4 and he averages 18+ per game. He is capable, but we are in the Midwest, and it is an eastern conference (although I believe Harandonkey may have won that award as a Jr. and ND is also in midwest), and most of that press has east coast bias.
Big East POY is definitly more possible this year, especially since in terms of returning stars the big east seems drier than ever. Kemba Walker, Cory fischer, and kevin jones are the front runners, and neither of them I would say is substantially better than DJO. He is going to be the primary option on a team that will need him to put up points on the board every night, combine that with a big east that is the most evenly balanced since Marquette joined, and you have good combination of factors that could lead to a sleeper like DJO taking big east POY.
