Food Wars, a show on the travel channel, will be making a trip to Milwaukee. The show will air on Wednesday and will put the Sobleman Burger up against the burger from AJ Bombers. Thought this was pretty cool to see. I love Soblemans but have never had AJ Bombers and was wondering what other scoopers thought of the two fine establishments.

pretty good burgers nonetheless
That show was a commercial for Marquette! I had heard of Sobelman's but graduated in 2000 (only a year after they opened), so I'll have to make a trip there next time to Milwaukee. I was rooting for Sobelmans too considering it was backed by so many of our students. That was the best Food Wars I've seen in a while.
I got through about 3 minutes of it and had to turn it off. The Bombers twitter cult (twult?) is just too annoying. It's a shame, used to really enjoy the place. But the twitter orgy (tworgy?) that happens there most days keeps me from going. And the food has really gone downhill since it opened. Last couple of times I was there, the burgers were way overcooked.
Dave has done so much for MU students and organizations, it's too bad Sobelman's didn't win.
Because of the aforementioned whores, I'll never go to bombers again. I'm not going to ever again. I'm not gonna go as far as saying bombers fans are Nazis but they're at least a bunch of ... s who need to drink the kool-aid of the cult and go the way of Jonestown

Come on Ari, tell us what you really think :D
I stole this from a friend:
"Judging Sobelmans not on the Sobelman's burger is like judging Shakespeare on a haiku. Forget Food Wars, you have my heart Sobelmans."
Based on his posts on this thread and others, it appears that Ari has a massive hatred for "cool" people, attractive people, gay people, guys who sing poorly, people who disagrees with him, Twitter, Food Wars, and he also never gets laid. I guess I'd be angry too if that was my life.
Anyway, in my book, Sobelman's beats any burger in town.

For the old folk, what do you mean by the twitter cult and the twitter orgy?
Do people go there and sit around and tweet all day how they're hanging out at AJ Bombers and its the bestest, most coolest place in Milwaukee?

Exactly as you described it. Which is why when I go there I get cold death stares from a few since I don't play the fanboy game with them.
I've been to AJ Bombers a couple times and can honestly say that I've never had a bad burger there. My biggest problem is their buns. That being said, Sobelman's will always remain the King of Milwaukee Burgers in my book.

funny...the tweet that started all that was from @[redacted]: Because of #foodwars and @ajbombers I'm unfollowing SO many people and turning my twitter off for awhile #loyalty

so basically...you disagreed with them and unfollowed them...and now you are complaining about them unfollowing you bc you were an a-hole...and you clearly realized you were earlier today too seeing as how you deleted all your off-puting tweets...
Moving on...I thoroughly enjoy both AJBombers and Sobelman's burgers...the better overall burger I think goes to Sobelman's...but Bomber's burgers definitely get huge points for creativity with the Barrie Burger and Bomber Burger. and yes, I do enjoy going into Bombers and people...the patrons and the staff...knowing who I am and having conversations (in real life mind you) with all of them.
Funny that in the Angelo's thread, people complain about bartenders not being personal with patrons...yet here is a great example of staff who gets to know the patrons and people crap all over it.

fuckem if they cant take a joke
AJ Bombers is pretty bad. I just don't see the plus side.
The beef is mediocre and their buns are terrible.
There's a reason that they have a huge selection of burger toppings: you need some serious flavor to cover up the inadequacies of the meat and bread.
Those little deep fried cheesy things with the chipotle ranch are out of this world, though :)
Drinking there is out of the question. With a place like Red Rock saloon just up the street that has *way* better food and is more down to earth there's no reason to go to AJ Bombers... unless you want a peanut butter sandwich with some cheap beef thrown into it so that they can call it a burger.

I thought I heard the guys from Durango took over the kitchen at Red Rock. If it's close to the same menu I might have to check that out.

Both places cook good burgers, and I do enjoy AJ Bombers, but nothing I've had there can hold a candle to the Sobelman burger, which is the best burger I've ever had, hands down.
Where Dave got screwed was in the fact that the contest was this custom "Milwaukee Burger" (one kind of cheese, different bacon, etc.). Since AJ Bombers makes all sorts of custom burgers, this was not too different from their everyday fare. If Dave were allowed to serve up a mouth-watering Sobelman burger, in all it's three-cheese & Jalepeno glory it would have been a unanimous decision the other way.

You heard right :) Killer food!
bombers burgers are awful. i dont see how they could have won this challenge.
Here's my list:
1) Solly's (on Port Washington Rd. just south of Hampton...anybody ever had it? They put like a stick of butter on your burger and their malts are RIDICULOUS).
2) Sobleman's (only VERY SLIGHTLY behind Solly's. Their cheese is to their burger what Solly's butter is to its burgers.)
3) Five Guys
4) Elsa's
5) Kopps
6) Culvers
Honestly I'd rather have my own home cooked burger than an AJ Bombers burger. I went once and I enjoyed eating peanuts while waiting for my burger, but that's about all I enjoyed about the experience. The rest was awful in my opinion. I agree exactly with what Skatastrophy said, other than I think the meat is terrible rather than average.

I don't know exactly how to describe it. Perhaps the easiest way to think of it is the opposite of a typical pub burger. No toppings other than cheese and maybe ketchup, a thinner bun that's been steamed and not toasted, and a pattie that's very thin, but with a much larger circumfrance than your typical burger. Think of it like a slider on steroids in terms of size, or a similar in terms of looks to a burger from Marquette Gyro's but with higher quality products.
It's a style that used be pretty common in Milwaukee at the old custard/ice cream shops that were all over the city, but their aren't many places around that make it anymore.

Not exactly. Culver's is closer than a typical pub burger, but the pattie isn't the right size or thickness.
Admittedly I'm not sure if any place around here still makes them like that. I used to get them at the now defunct River Brook in Shorewood, which had been a Pig and Whistle before that. Maybe Leon's or Gille's but I haven't been to those places in a long time.

I know not coming from Wisconsin, it was weird as hell seeing burgers served without any toppings/condiments.

Webb's isn't the right size either. The thickness might be close, but the burger itself is still a standard size. The ones I'm thinking of were much wider.

A triple at Culver's is not three stacked patties but three patties packed into one wide/large patty.....somewhat close to what you are describing, I think.

Thanks for jogging my memory... I couldn't think of the name of your #1 place. When I saw food wars was going to be in Milwaukee for a burger war, I thought Solly's was going to be one of the locations... that thing is a heart attack on a platter. It's one of the best burgers I've ever had though. Looking forward to getting back to Milwaukee to try Sobelmans and AJ's. I don't understand why there's so much hostility towards AJ Bombers though. Seems to me like the guy revived a location that has had about 10 different bars fail in the past 15 years.
By the way... Food Wars made it seem like Milwaukee is a mecca (no pun intended) for Cheeseburgers. I never thought Milwaukee had a worth while signature food. I guess I'd consider a brat more of a Wisconsin tradition... but it's hard to beat a Johnsonville that can be bought at most grocery stores around the country.
I can understand why some good cheese can compliment a burger, but I think it comes down to how juicy and flavorful the meat is and how it compliments the bun. I love Wisconsin and Milwaukee, but found the food to be pretty sub-par... it's good to hear that you guys have started specializing in the cheesburgers!
I'm sure this will get some Wisconsinites barking...

I'm not taking a swing at Milwaukee food... it was alright. But most cities are known for some food... does Milwaukee have a signature food? Does beer count?
Honestly, I'd say there are very few cities that I can think of off hand that are famous for one thing...
Philly cheesesteak
Chicago deep dish
New York Pizza and Bagels
Kansas City BBQ
uh.....
There is plenty of great food in Milwaukee... probably no signature dish, except Bratwurst probably.

I think we can give the state of Wisconsin Bratwurst and Cheese. But when it comes to cities known for food, there's alot more cities that come to mind.
Chicago- hot dogs, Italian Beef sandwiches, deep dish pizza
New York- Ray's pizza, Oysters, Jag bags, Bagels
Pittsburgh- Primanti"s sandwich
New Orleans poorboy, jumbalya/gumbo
Boston's clams chowder
San Francisco- Burrito's, sourdough bread, chinese food?
Cincinatti- Chili
St Louis- Imo's pizza, toasted ravioli
Indianapolis- hmmm.... maybe sweet corn? Or breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches?
Los Angeles- Dodger dog? I don't know though on this one
Miami- Cuban cuisine

Ask anyone in Pittsburgh where they need to eat when in town and they'll say Primanti's...
San Fran's sourdough is definitely not a stretch...
I was just typing stuff off the top of my head. The reality is that any town you visit will have specialties. It's good to see Milwaukee making it's mark and creating a niche w/ Cheeseburgers.

I think you guys really have 2 categories here:
- Local favorites
- National reputation
Skyline Chili is certainly a Cinci favorite, but I don't think anybody would really say Cinci is known for their Chili like NYC is known for their pizza. (local favorite vs national rep)
Shows like Man vs Food and Diners Drive-ins and Dives are bringing more of the local favorites onto the national scene, but "Primanti's sandwich" still can't be in the same category as Memphis or KC BBQ.
Those cities have nationally and internationally recognized reputations for good BBQ. I don't think Pittsburgh has a national rep for "sandwiches".
Every city has some local favorites, but that doesn't mean that city has a national rep. for that particular food.
Ask somebody from Brooklyn if they have heard of St. Louis being known for toasted ravioli. The odds aren't good, even though "toasted rav" is a local favorite in STL.

while I love the Sobelman and even admit to enjoying the AJ burger with the stuffed portabella, I think I had the best restaurant burger I've ever tasted last night. It may not be a fair comparison, well it's still a burger so I guess it's all fair, the Kobe burger at Chili Lili's had incredible flavor and the aged cheddar they use really tops it off
of course using kobe beef comes at a price, I believe it was $11 but once in awhile I'm worth it, cool place, check it out at the corner of Jackson & Menomonee

I grew up here. Used to root for them, until I realized just how much I hated their fans. Now I hope they lose in everything.
Lifetime ban for you as well. ;)

Not if you went to Marquette and have a soul.

I'll turn in my sweater vest. I've caught a lot of flack from people outside the scoop community.
In reality I'm not a badgers "fan." how ever it was an entertaining atmosphere and a great game to watch.(something I wish we had at MU ;) ) I'd never pass up an opportunity to watch two ranked teams go head to head (ND, USC w/e I'll enjoy the game). Plus there were personal implications for cheering for the badgers actually
I'm not jumping off the MU wagon any time soon so dont worry.
oh and in this case. The OSU fans were much more intolerable. They took offense to the allegations that Terrell Pryor can't read. Then we found out they were from Cincinnati so we accused them of spending time, or having a family member who spent time in prison. It was all good fun since these douchebags were bi-polar fans. Pryor could have a good run and they'd be praising him, he gets sacked and he's the worst QB in the league. They deserved it

Nobody. That's the price you pay for going to Marquette. If you go to grad school somewhere else, rooting for them would be okay, but outside of that you've got to be an impartial observer who just appreciates the sport.
I have not been to either place yet but here is a food blog about the show.

Now that the Food Wars hoopla is over I just wanted to offer up a couple of thoughts o the whole thing. I think Milwaukee was well-represented in the show. Going to Karl Ratzch's was a nice touch, same with the Milwaukee Public Market. I do hate how they use the same shots over and over (Sobleman on the 2nd story balcony, the google maps pan from restaurant to restaurant, etc.) and think they could have gotten some different clips instead of that filler. It does seem as if Camille Ford seems to really enjoy her job. I could see someone else in her position just doing the show for exposure, hoping to get out as soon as possible but she really seems to do her homework and brings a great deal of energy and passion to the show.
I will admit that I knew the winner weeks ago but that didn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the show. I think Joe Sorge and Dave Sobleman did a great job and I really liked the camera shots as he and Camille made their way through Sobleman's crowd. When the winner was announced, I really felt bad for Dave Sobleman, you could tell he was completely blindsided by the loss. He should hold his head up high though, he still serves some of the best burgers in the state. As I mentioned on Twitter, I love both of these places but there are a lot of other great burgers in the Milwaukee area including Stack'd, Mazo's, Wicked Hop, Trinity 3, Taylor's People's Park (Waukesha), Fuzzys on Main (also Waukesha), Bunkers (West Allis), and Elsa's on the Park.
Before they came to Milwaukee one of their people contacted me asking for advice on who they should have as judges. Here is what I sent to them:
"Two people come to mind for the panelists, one is Kyle Cherek, host of Wisconsin Foodie http://wisconsinfoodie.com/, an incredible show about pretty much anything that has to do with Wisconsin food and drink. Watch some of the episodes on the web and you'll see that he would probably be a great judge. Another person would be Tom Graber from Milwaukee's Best Burgers website. I don't know him personally but if you look at his website http://bestburgersinmilwaukee.com/ you can tell he's pretty much all about promoting great Milwaukee area burgers without bias. Even though he doesn't live here, George Motz (Hamburger America) has made several visits to Milwaukee and could be a nice addition to the panel of judges."
I'd like to say I was one of the reasons Kyle was picked but they were actually already talking to him at that point. I think he did a great job and is becoming the face of a thriving Wisconsin food scene. To hear about Kyle's take on the whole thing, check this out. Lucky bastard even got to hang out with Camille Ford afterwards! I am a huge Josh Ozersky fan so it was awesome seeing him on the show.
So far this year we have had Anthony Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern, and Camille Ford in town. Who is next? Adam Richman perhaps?
^ thanks for those links I found them very interesting and will be trying some new to me places (Port of Call and Biggs Roadhouse in particular)
the owner of Chili Lili had told us about working with Lagniappe Cafe when creating his menu and their burgers sound like they are identical and the bestburgersinmilwaukee site rated Lagniappe's as his favorite, that 9YO cheddar really does top off the wagyu patty well <drool>
