Title: Some mostly non-MU recruiting news
Post by: MarkCharles on September 19, 2010, 11:12:27 PM
Chicago sf Sam Thompson picked Ohio St. He was briefly a target of Marquette's, but the interest didn't seem to last too long. I'd say Ohio St is recruiting at a level as high as perhaps anybody except Kentucky for the 2010 and '11 classes. I wouldn't be surprised to see another Final 4 for OSU in the next few years.

Also, Arizona has landed pg Josiah Turner, Rivals #10 overall. Sean Miller has really hit the ground running at Arizona. This relates to MU only in that it is a blow to Louisville. Turner was their top priority besides Quincy Miller, and if he doesn't sign for them, UL fans will probably feel a bit disappointed in Pitino. They will still have a really nice class with Blackshear and Chane Behanan, but thats not the program-boosting class they were hoping for.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see NCAA sanctions for OSU in the next few years  ;)

Whats the point of saying something like that? I'm really fed up with people on this board just assuming anyone who recruits well is dirty. I know, I know, my head is in the sand. I just don't see any reason to make accusations before you are given any substantial reason to do so. People could look at Marquette and say the same things you're saying.

Pretty standard comment around here. If a school recruits well (as in, blows away anything Buzz can put together) then that particular school is cheating. Same old tired story. Jealousy is a bit*h.

OSU and their ways are no secret my friend.

I know a several people from grad school and from work who are OSU alums and most of them actually think that OSU runs dirty athletic programs. It's kind of a running joke with us (like when I asked them if Terelle Pryor plans to leave his Heisman Trophy in NYC so he doesn't have to pay for shipping when they ask for it back in a couple years).

Sorry if I offended you but I'd suggest lightening up.

It's no secret the classes, I mean a lack of classes, that Greg Oden was taking.

Roy Williams had his second in home visit of the week late last night with Cody Zeller...it was apparently a last minute meeting called at Zeller's request.

UNC insiders are saying that Zeller is about to commit (if he already hasn't) to UNC. This comes right behind his in home with Crean. If he does in fact commit to UNC without taking his official visit to IU this will be a major blow to IU and Crean since Zeller has been their top in state target since Crean arrived there.

Williams' jet left Indiana this morning heading to Wisconsin for an open gym session with JP Tokoto.

Not offended at all, in fact I have a strong dislike for OSU. And of course I have heard for years that OSU isn't as pure as the driven snow. But this isn't about me lightening up, its about people needlessly throwing around negativity and accusations with no reason to do so other than past, unrelated stories. Like it or not, these boards are in some small way a reflection of the culture of Marquette basketball fans, and crap like this is a poor representation.

Again, whats the point? Does it make you fell better about Marquette? Do you get a sense of satisfaction when other programs get into trouble, and hope OSU is next? I don't get it...

The point is that it's good-natured fun. It's a little overdramatic to say I was "needlessly throwing around negativity and accusations." It was just a harmless joke. If fans of other schools decide to come onto this board and they leave it thinking poorly of MU's entire fanbase because someone jokingly poked fun at THE Ohio State University, then so be it. You clearly take this type of thing seriously, but I don't. And I'd be willing to bet that most people on here don't take sarcastic comments seriously either.

Comments like that may be harmless, but I don't consider accusing others of cheating to be "good-natured". And its not so much that I think this reflects poorly on MU fans or I take these boards seriously, its much more about how tired and annoying these "jokes" are. And, they're just plain not funny.

Reposting from Goodman on Fox's RSS feed:

"Big weekend in terms of commitments. We're just going to run them down without attribution since we didn't break any of them here, anyway. The most high-profile was Josiah Turner going to Arizona. Sam Thompson pledged to Ohio State. Here are some others: Jabril Trawick to Georgetown; Isiah Thomas and FIU hauled in Cedric McAfee; Shonn Miller to Cornell; Tim Dixon to Georgia; Kenyatta Smith to Harvard; junior college big man Robert Goff to Oklahoma; DeMarcus Nelson's little brother, Darius, to UTEP; Ramon Eaton to Pepperdine; Julius Brown to Toledo; Pat Connaughton to Notre Dame; Terran Petteway to Texas Tech; Julian Debose to Rice; Andrew Wilson to Missouri State; Chier Ajou to New Mexico; and Zaid Hearst to Quinnipiac."
