what a fantastic pick!! too bad justice thomas could tag team with him. i think the school turned out beautifully-what a statement to people driving by...too bad they couldn't have done that with the dental school
this rumor had been floating around the law school for the past few weeks, glad to see it confirmed. not to mention the wisconsin supreme court chief justice, shirley abrahamson. not too shabby.

Sweet. Hopefully he impress on a few of them to actually read the Constitution and not make crap up to fit their agenda.
Regardless of where one stands politically it's an honor to have someone of his stature on hand for the dedication. Though I don't share his politics, I'd feel the same way if it were Justice Stevens.

I survived Rehnquist giving the dullest speech in history at my graduation. I've heard that Scalia gives a decent speech, so at least they have that going for them. People study the bible their whole lives and reach different conclusions. Hence all of the religions. MU basketball study the minutiae of the team for hours and reach different conclusions. Ergo muscoop. Constitutional scholars reach different conclusions even after years of study. Many have different opinions than Justice Scalia. chicos, just say 'at least they have someone who's interpretation of the constitution is in line with mine.' That would be less disingenuous.

I am all for debate and actually enjoy a heated discussion on the merits of any idea, philosophy, policy, etc., but I enjoy it much more when both sides are honest about what if fact and what is not.
So where would a guy like Scalia dine on Wednesday night? He has that "Eddie Martini's" look about him, to me.

+1. You have the perfect guide in the Federalist Papers. Shouldn't be difficult to understand what the law of the land is, unless you are determined to ignore it and are trying remake America.
Certainly helps out that the Law School dean clerked for Scalia in the '90s.

I think the point was that you didn't know how to spell Kenyan.
Scalia is a nut-job extremist (i.e. he knows 99% of his opinions before even hearing the particulars of the case). They have them on both sides, left and right. I am pretty middle of the road, by the way. John Roberts (Bush appointee) is a pretty good example of what a SCOTUS justice should be. Pretty disappointing that MU would choose this guy.

Nut job extremist? Source that's not from the extreme left (the folks that hate him are folks like Barney Frank, Maureen Dowd, 100% of Daily Kos and Huffington Post and the NY Times)? Thanks ;)
You may disagree with his interpretations of the Constitution as an originalist and one that doesn't believe in a "living constitution"...but that hardly makes him a nut job extremist, unless you want to call some of the greatest legal minds this country has had over the last 200+ years as nut job extremists as well.
His 60 Minutes interview a few years ago was fascinating, whether you agree with him or not, he is a very fascinating individual...fascinating individual. There are also some great videos of the speeches he gives to Law schools and the Federalist Society.

All judges subjectively interpret. If you disagree with a judge's opinion, then that judge is an activist. If you agree with the judge's interpretation, then that judge did a good job of following the Constitution or the legislation or founder's intent or whatever.
All judges make law. When you interpret a word in a statute or in the Constitution, you are very much deciding the direction of the law and literally making it. Let's not pretend judges are calling something along the lines of whether a baseball runner is safe or out. It is not even close to that and was never intended to be.

i suppose then kagan is your man ;D pretty disappointing mu would select scalia?? where's the tolerance victor?? a little diversity from the other side becomes holy water to the left. and this from a school that initially chose a "red-hot" alternative female to to head one of it's colleges?? and by "red-hot" i don't mean in the looks department. most legal scholars on both sides of the political spectrum agree that justice scalia is a fair-minded constitutional legal mind. can't go very wrong there. i'd love to hear him in person and definitely puts mu on the national map legally. justice john roberts would be another excellant choice, albeit my back-up
Antonin Salia is hardly a nut job. His prescence adds great prominence to the MU Law School and is a terrific "GET" If you have ever heard him you know he is a thoughful, interesting man who will give a outstanding speech.
You must be psychic if youn know that he has his mind made up before deliberation.
Scalia is a good justice even tho I often disagree with him. He is a great writer and I at least appreciate that o can follow his logic unlike some judges. He is not an extremist. He is thoughtful. He is reasonably far to the right of the American political center though. The whle court is right of center now whereas ten or twenty years ago it was to the left of the American center. All justices bring their biases and scalia and the court now are no exception. Its just a fact of life.

And you know as well as anyone that that sort of thinking has nothing to do with it.
I can't wait to see how many 1 term losers the Tea Party can come up with this November.
Should be fun to see the gridlock in DC.

The Tea Party will no doubt produce some one term losers, though not nearly as many as President Obama's coattails produced in 2008.

Maybe I misunderstood your original comments. Are you calling Tea Party candidates these type of people or the Tea Party movement (i.e. Independent minded people who are fed up with spending, taxation, etc)? As far as them being ignorant, I don't know....I'll bet I can name a ton more establishment folks that are bigger morons and ignorant on many fronts than a few of the Tea Party candidates, but you may disagree. Do I think Sharon Angle is a whack job...yup. Do I think her opponent is? Yup.
I don't disagree with you on some of the candidates as potential one time losers, but I do disagree with you if you are referencing the people that absolutely disgusted with both parties and have come together loosely in this "party" to voice their concerns.
C'mon CBB,
I love ya brother, but to say this Tea Party movement is a mixture of people fed up with both parties is a bit of a stretch. I would say, 95% of TP'ers are a mixture of extreme-right, and right of center of folks.
I mean look at some of these bozo's of the TP'ers slobber over.
Sharon Angle in Neveda...wants to abolish to the Dept. Of Education, Commerce, and scale back SS. Has stated that women who have been raped by their family members, should look as a child as a blessing. Don't get me started on Palin. Most of these folks are grenade throwers, and will say anything to get elected. Hell, after Petreaus has said that a massive burning of the Quran by that church in Florida, could be used as propoganda as extremists to carry out violence against US troops, some Tea Party candidates refuse to come out against it. I mean c'mon.
Now, I'm all for a representative Congress, and actually think a either a controlled House or Senate by the Republicans, could actually increase in getting things done, but many of these folks in the TP movement are wack jobs. Imagine 15-20 bizzaro-Al Frankens.
I apologize for grammar, spelling (typing on a BlackBerry), and political nature of the post...
Night y'all, God Bless the USA.
Wow that was fast... only 2 pages and we're calling Scalia "a nut-job extremist" on the one side and accusing MU law faculty, and presumably all law faculty, of making crap up about the Constitution to "fit their agenda" on the other side.
Unsurprisingly, neither is true.

Night y'all, God Bless the USA.
There are whack jobs everywhere...I can name about 70 in the US Senate.
I'm talking about the every day people that are supporting the concept of what this stands for, which is less gov't, less spending, more freedom, etc. Don't let the news define who these people are, which it sounds like you are doing. From day one the "establishment" has been saying they are nutjobs, then they said they are racists, then they said they would fizzle out by Summer....now they're all freaking out because they are likely to get their asses handed to them in November. It's so bad, you have liberal groups now infiltrating tea party rallies to purposely scream racial epithats and set these people up. How sick is that.
At any rate, in terms of who these people are, I believe I said Independent minded and the polling shows that to be correct. Independent (not GOP or DNC) voters rally to the Tea Party characteristics at a clip of 41%. No question, a lot of GOP members back them, too, 53% I believe. A strong libertarian streak runs through there as well.
Personally, I'm enjoying it. As someone that hates both the DNC and GOP, I'm loving every minute of it. Watching the establishment crap their pants and call these people fringe or whack jobs is hilarious to me, especially considering how much they have pathetically screwed up the country on their own.
I can't wait for November, for so many reasons.

I am in support of a lot of that, and yes I agree, the establishment needs a shakeup, possibly a dismantling of sorts, but hell the average the age of folks of Congress is around 63, so hell, nature has to kick in sooner or later ;)
One the of the best stories I read, was last weekend, at the opposing MLK rally and the Glenn Beck Rally, folks from each rally were waving, shaking hands, giving the peace sign to each other...I truly think that if these two groups could some get together, they would agree on 75% of issues...But we have the media, lobbyists, and the props that are politicians inciting vitriol at such high levels, little to no messaging is getting through.
You're all grounded for discussing politics here! Thought you'd slip it by un-noticed in the superbar eh?
Anyhow, locked, and no, nobody is banned - the grounded thing is just a joke.
