Title: Marquette Soccer
Post by: Blackhat on September 01, 2010, 09:30:44 AM
plays UWM tonight at 7:00 at Valley Fields.

If you're going to attend one local soccer match this year this is the one to go to.  MU has won the last two Milwaukee Cup matches and looks to keep it going.

This year is either the beginning of a long prosperous Louis Bennett era or the beginning of the end for him.   Hopefully his lads come to play this season.

What's the outlook for the women's socer team?  Love going to the NCAAs and watching them play out  in So Cal when they make it here.

To be honest I'm not as up on the women's team.   However they seem to be hovering around the top 25 in the nation this year and have a great goaltender.

Markus Roeders is a very solid soccer coach who is close to making the Marquette women's program elite, especially in comparison to the men's side of things.

I think he has made them an elite program.. I used to see him at big tournaments out here. Class guy

Good luck to the Men. I will start to follow them as well

Shouldn't this be the breakout year for the men?  Louis has been there a few years now, I'd suspect that they need to start getting things going.

Did they ever build that addition/new soccer stadium at valley fields that was talked about a few years ago?

If the weather holds out, I'm planning on going tonight.

They are in the middle of building locker rooms. Not sure its much of an addition but it's a start.

4-2, officially.  Very late own goal.

Just awful. In all honesty, it could have been 6 for UWM, had they not missed a couple of clear chances in the first half. MU's backline, especially the center half #12 looked terrible. The second goal for UWM was a thunderbolt, but the other three were off of defensive breakdowns.

I really wonder if Louis had any real tactics in mind. All it was was longball after longball. They had plenty of space to set up their attack on the wings, but would just punt it down the center of the field. The shame of it is, Mallace was the best player on the field. He should have been on the ball far more often than he was.

It'll be interesting to see how they do. I wasn't terribly impressed.

It's been the same junk for five years, extremely unimpressed with Bennett.

Contract year for Bennett= Rev up the coaching search engine.

Question....does anyone know the number of scholarships that are allowed for men's soccer and whether or not MU takes full advantage of those scholarships?

The NCAA allows 9.9 scholarships for men's soccer.  They do(or at least they used to) use them all, but it's almost always in the form of a partial scholarship.

As a private school, does that present us with disadvantages?  Especially since we are not as well endowed as other privates?

I don't know; it hasn't stopped, St. John's, St. Louis, Drake, ND, etc.  from reaching top 25 status.

We pay our head coach a very solid salary for men's soccer, they upped the ante and put a relatively sizable monetary investment in Bennett.

It does, but other private schools with similar endowments have been successful.  Portland, Monmouth and Drake were all in the Top 25 last year and if you add up the endowment at each of those three schools it still doesn't equal ours.  St. John's endowment is $20 million behind us, and they've been a soccer power for decades, winning multiple conference championships and an NCAA Championship.  I suppose it's possible that our tuition is much higher than all those schools and that's causing a problem, but that seems doubtful.

For whatever reason, MU just has never been a soccer school.  One NCAA tournament appearence in program history, and that was more than a decade ago.  Bennett hasn't really made things much better.  He was a great coach at UWM, but he's not shown that yet at MU.

Based on the amount of noise coming out of the tent after the game, I'd say it's safe to say they weren't following any tactics set forth in the last 10 minutes.
