Title: Another Possible Walk-On?
Post by: Tom Crean's Tanning Bed on August 05, 2010, 09:51:43 PM

Northern Illinois graduate Sean Kowal finally got his release from the school late Tuesday night after the Huskies had originally denied his request to pursue a master's degree at another school. NIU said he initially didn't provide it with specific information on his intended academic choice.

Kowal, a center, gave Northern Illinois a list of five programs -- his hometown St. Louis Billikens, Xavier, Marquette, Creighton and SMU -- all of which are religious-based schools that he wanted to pursue to see if they had theology master's programs.

He'll be pleased to know that we do offer a Master of the Arts degree in Theology.

Is there a limit to the number of walkons on a team?  Or is the only limit the 13 scholarship players?

He's not going to walk on.  It says right in the article that he didn't need a release to walk on somewhere, but the release allows him to get a scholarship.

I really doubt he's going anywhere where he can't get a scholarship.

Is he eligible to play in games immediately or does he have to wait a year?  Somewhere I heard that if you have to transfer because a major is not offered at your current school the one year wait doesn't apply.  However, wait or no wait, it would appear he has only one year NCAA eligibility left.

Seriously...why don't people read the article?

"The legislation is a one-time transfer exception called 14.1.9.1, which allows a graduated player to pursue a graduate degree at another school if that person has eligibility remaining. If the waiver is granted and the previous school sponsors the appeal, the player can play immediately."

We do not have a scholarship available(hopefully), so he will not come here.

If he's better than somebody on the roster, MU should take him.

Scholarships are 1 year renewable. This is big boy basketball. If somebody better comes along, you have to make adjustments to the roster.

Only has 1 year of eligability left.  Wouldn't make sense unless you've totally given up on someone currently on the team.

You do realize that most folks don't know that "teal" is sarcasm?  The "teal" thing is rather unique to this board.  Silly.

1. That is why i offered the info, since I figured he/she didn't know.  2.  I didn't write it.  3. I don't think people should need a color code on that statement to know it is sarcasm.

he aint paying $40k to come be the 14th man at MU and that is about where he would fit in.  the guy did absolutley nothing against the better teams they played, ie illinois, temple, minnesota.  he had some decent games against some , in general, bad MAc teams...nothing of which can resembl the BE type competiton he would face.  otule and Gardner are better than him right now.
