Title: Jacksonville, FL Advice
Post by: MU B2002 on July 23, 2010, 11:04:31 AM
I just found out that I am moving with work to Jacksonville, and really know nothing about the area.  Any scoopers have familiarity with Jacksonville?  Looking for advice as far as where to live/what to do etc...

And I am married with a 3yr old, so schools will soon be a consideration.

Thanks.

While I never lived in Jacksonville I did spend a lot of time in the Jax beach area and found it to be a nice area in general with the proximity to the ocean as the primary benefit.  Since I have lived in the south I can attest that schools generally prett weak and unless you're in an area such as Ponte Vedra I would heavily recommend private schools.

The one thing I would say is get used to spending time in strip malls.  It seems like every bar, restaurant always seem to be located in a strip mall; which to say the least is weird if you are not from there.

Best of luck in your move

Jacksonville is a nice area.  Have visited the Jax/St. Augustine area a few times for vacation, Gator Bowl, etc.  We have a few alumni from Jax on our Florida club's linkedin board:  http://www.linkedin.com/groups?mostPopular=&gid=1918493 (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?mostPopular=&gid=1918493)  You may wish to connect with a few of them for information.

The nearest alumni chapter may actually be in Savannah.  If you are interested, look up the South Carolina and South Florida clubs at http://www.marquette.edu/alumni/chapters/regionalnz.shtml (http://www.marquette.edu/alumni/chapters/regionalnz.shtml)

Best wishes on the move.
