Title: Beat Syracuse
Post by: Windyplayer on July 15, 2010, 12:20:11 PM
Anyone sick of losing to Syracuse? Granted, they're a phenomenal (Crean superlative, but warranted) program, but I feel like we're developing a complex that we cannot beat them. Results against Cuse since joining the BE:

2010--L--76-71
2009--L--86-79
2008--L--87-72
2007--L--70-58
2006--DNP, thankfully.

It seems like they show zero respect for Marquette and walk around with an air of confidence bordering arrogance. Does anyone else get an inexplicable feeling that they don't think we deserve to be in the Big East? I realize that this could all be a figment of my imagination. Regardless, when they come to the BC this year, I'm expecting a big W to put an end to this drought along with some respect. We're a legit program, we shouldn't lose to any team for four consecutive seasons.

The Amigos team was not a good matchup for the Cuse against the 2-3.  Syracuse had guards to keep up, big men who could punish MU, and played the best defense to beat MU.

Last year, MU could shoot and it was a close loss on the road.

Boeheim is a dirtbag--never liked him--big time whiner.

Yea, it is deadtime, but why not discuss Syracuse.  Boeheim is a great coach regardless of what you think of him.  He has put it to Marquette with superior coaching and players up to now.  Next year may be a different story.

only team we haven't beaten, and it really hasn't been close. the 2009 game was without Dom, and if i recall correctly we weren't really in contention.  the closest thing about the game last year was the final score.  their zone defense must be a part of why they have always had our number, but I certainly cant explain it.

2009 was the Senior day and we lost in OT.  Heartbreaking.

Acker had a bad TO at midcourt that led to a 3 point play on the other end. McNeal hit a 3 that put MU up one with like 20 seconds left. Cuse hit a FT to force OT.

Not really sure why the hating on Boeheim. I have much more respect for him compared to Pitino, Calhoun, or Huggins any day.

Your recollection is mistaken.  MU had the lead and the ball with seconds to go and Acker almost gifted the ball to Jonny flynn to push to OT.

There's no coincidence that we haven't beaten Syracuse considering that historically we've had difficulty against zone defenses... more so under Crean's monotonous offensive sets.  Passing the ball along the perimeter won't break a 2-3 zone unless you have lights out long range shooters.  I was a Crean fan for the most part other than his lack of adjustment to zone defenses.  I think that we finally have the right players to make Buzz's version of the motion offense effective against Syracuse.

I was sitting on the floor for that game and realized how INSANELY quick/strong with the ball Johnny Flynn was. The guy was getting WHEREVER he wanted to go, WHENEVER he wanted to. Not having James really hurt us defensively.

This season should be a W. I think they lost a lot at the end of the season with Johnson, Rautins and Onuaku. Granted, I think they will be even taller and longer this coming season than last season (which is key to a strong zone) but they are much younger and will have to depend on guys that didnt play much last year.

And we've actually beaten everyone else at least twice.  Louisville and WVU twice, everyone else 3 or more times.

They seem to be the type of program that when people say these things they still come in and exceed expectations... look at last year!  Peopl were saying how much they lost in Flynn and that it was going to be a 'down' year for them, yet...

Regardless, I am sick of losing to them and hope we can beat em down this season.

I stand corrected.  The disappointment and sadness of how that season ended all just sort of blends together.  My bad.

- Cuse has been and always will be big, long, and athletic
- their zone has given us fits: drive in and you're in the trees, try to shoot and the long arms are on you
- our first win will be at te Bradley center

True, but no one knew the type of impact Wes Johnson would have. Only Boeheim said they were going to be good. He said that about his team this year, too. He thinks they'll be top 15. I guess it's best to listen to him.

The final score was pretty close last year, but we never really had a chance to win.  Big finish to make the score very respectable.  I agree that we really owe them one or two.

Losing to them by 5 on the road last year was pretty impressive.  'Cuse seem to lose a lot every year and just reload.  They have another great class coming in.

I don't really think they disrespect Marquette or feel like we have no business being in the Big East, but let's face it, we've been competitive in Big East and they've been dominant.  I would love to beat them.

Dirtbag?  Not sure what you mean by that, but if you don't like Boeheim, their aren't many coaches you can like.  He's not a saint, but far from a dirtbag IMO.

I think you can find much dirtier dirtbags than Boeheim. Like, maybe, this guy??

My comments regarding Cuse's lack of respect and arrogance stemmed from this guy. I'll always remember when he put his index finger to his mouth to quiet the crowd. He was good, but not good enough to do that.

Just becuz I was curious about whatever happened to Eric...

[quote On December 26, 2009, Devendorf signed with the Reno Bighorns of the NBDL. In his debut, Devendorf played 14:33 and scored two points on 1-of-3 shooting as the Bighorns defeated the Tulsa 66ers 102-87. On January 6, 2010, Devendorf was waived by the Bighorns.

On February 8, 2010, Devendorf signed with the Waikato Pistons of the New Zealand National Basketball League. He scored 49 points in his season debut.

Devendorf was released in April by the Pistons following an incident in which he was invlolved in a small bar conflict involving former Syracuse star Josh Pace. He was signed to NBL team Wellington Saints shortly after, and starts as point guard averaging 26.1 ppg.

Devendorf has signed on to play with the Melbourne Tigers in the next Australian National Basketball League season.

Since MU joined the BE:

MU 54-32, 5 NCAA appearances
SU 52-34, 3 NCAA appearances, 1 Big East Reg. Season Title

Syracuse has had higher highs (last year obviously) and lower lows than MU.  I would hardly call them dominant in the Big East in comparison to Marquette since the Warriors joined the Big East.

Cuse's zone isn't the problem-----the problem is that we have given up 80 points/game in the 4 games we've played. Not going to beat anyone consistently when you give up 80 ppg.

A big part of the defense problem has been size differential.
