Got here for the second round of games. I'm watching the Ryko- Team 2 game. Competition is pretty weak for Jimmy and he probably has 14 half way thru the second quarter. Barro could win them the tourney as he compliment JB well. Vanderstruggling so far about 1 for 6 from the perimeter. The athleticism is obviously there but he really has to tighten up his game. I know ts summer league but the ball security differtial between him and JB is glaring. Has been very uncomfortable in traffic even with the short guards of team 2. To be fair tey are playing a two three zone and really taking away his driving lanes. Going to watch the second Hal of the other game to see Jamail. And Jamil
DJO Tweeted:
"36pts 11 boards and the Win first pro-am game in Milwaukee"
Didn't get to see him play but Gardner looks good. He is big as an Ox but not overweight. Solid 6'9 maybe 275. Doesn't look like he's light on his feet but I don't know he can ever change that. Definitely looks like he's lost some serious weight tho since those YouTube videos everyone was concerned about
Jones has the NBA body. Looks tired since his team is playing withou any subs, but he's 6'6 with the frame to match
Buycks is in his element with this uptempo playground style. Baird had 60 at half
Vander has nice rotation on his shot but seems to short arm it and ends up flat. JB still gets to the line seemingly everytime down the floor
Love these updates. Keep 'em coming. and thanks!!
Thanks for the updates wegz. how come you didnt tell me you were going last night? I would have gone to bed earlier. Instead I wake up to half eaten marquette gyros next to my bed. Im blaming you...
Highlight of the morning: Vander alley oop to JB who carries a guy on his back gets fouled and finishes the drunk. JB still looks lanky but that took some serious strength
That's great to hear about Jimmy. One weakness in his game last season (although it caused debate among us bloggers) was his ability/inability to finish strong. Love the updates. Sweatin' my b@lls off down here in ATL wishin' I could be there in person to see these games.
keep it up (the updates)!!!
Ryko held on and beat their obviously less skilled opponent. Baird blew out north Shore but it was pretty unfair with the run and gunstyle and no subs for North Shore.
Jones - absolutely beautiful three point shot. Hit two i saw with a guy right on top of him and a third with a guy running at him. Underatanably tired but really didn't see him in transition at all. Personal prediction as a perfect three for MU and probably the 7th man to start the season.
Blue - this kid is such a tease. You can see an all Big east player lurking somewhere insde him, but just not there yet. Was stunned by his crossover and ball handling. He will break some ankles. Jump shot wasn't there tidy don't know if it was just a bad day or a sign of something bigger. Strong body for a freshman but he needs to learn to seek out the contact rather than shy away ala JB. All in all I think Buzz can polish him into his full potential. Sixth man right now IMHO
JB - better than lazar this year? Dwarfed the inferior opponents like he should have. Didn't keep track but from eye balling it I say he easily had 35 points. Hit at least one three ball. Worked well against an all be it short zone d
Buycks - he did his thing hitting a few jumpers and trash talking. Took a few bad floaters and in traffic shots but that to be expected. Prolly starts at the beginning of the year. I'll be happy with 8 a game and a decrease in his TOs
Fulce - eh... Missed a big drunk. Rebounded. Starting 5 I think but then again I didn't have a chance to see Chris.
This team is ungodly deep. Trying to speculate as to the lineup is really tough bc of the talent level. I didn't get to see the pgs but if caduogan can be the top tier signing we hoped for then this team is very complete.
My lineup guess (that's all I can call it)
Junior
DJO
Buycks
Butler
Fulce
6 vander
7 jones
8 otule
9 Williams
with hopefully smith an Gardner getting some minutes in as well
Hottest Kicks of the Pro-Am Award:
1. Dwight Buycks (great grey and blue combo)
2. DJO
Little Tidbits/Impressions off some pick up b-ball:
*Reggie Smith is quick. Won't have to worry about a pg burning us this year if Cadougan gets in a bad matchup cause he's a turbo pack. Shot was clicking, has the tools to be really good. Needs to learn more of the game and how to control it, etc.
*Beautiful Reggie Smith, Chris Otule give and go monstrous dunk by Otule. Very impressive. Otule still has trouble running long stretches if the game is up and down. Is more aggressive rebounding and has a better touch around the rim.
* E Will looked more put together and had a dynamite put back dunk, his stroke looked pretty good. He looked more comfortable out there.
*Jamail Jones- Pro body, drifts too much and has kind of a passive offensive game right now...has all the tools though.
*Davante Gardner- Nice touch, but needs to meet one Mr. Todd Smith asap. Needs to improve his conditioning so he doesn't get Mbao'd.
My son and I were there for first games and part of second games. Players that stood out were:
Reggie Smith: he is a high-speed true point offensive machine, inside and out; he completely controlled the game speed for both teams, and will definitely push for minutes; looks real good at the line and appears fearless in the lane.
DJO: a man playing with boys; appeared super quick while under control scores, plays hard , and defends...reminds me od another MU 2 guard playing in the GAME.
Chris Otule: Wow!! Aggressive D, improved footwork, agile and active. Can't believe hes the same guy, appears much more confident and aggressive. With Gardner's inside bulk at back-up, this will be a promising few years inside for MU. IMO, played better than any of the bigs there today.
Joe Fulce: all over the court, crashing the boards, hitting his shots an playing tough D...he's serious about this year.
Junior Cadougan: solid, quick, and aggressive with good D; great to have 2 bonafide point guards on this team!
Awesome stuff, thanks!

I'm not there anymore or I would....they were pretty hot. Maybe if someone's still there they can on their phone or I'll get a pic next time if I see them... DJO's were pretty hot too.
Here are a few of my takes on the play today:
1) The best player by far was DJO, man amongst boys. His shot was on, seemed quicker.
The boy is chiseled. Star this year.
2) Jimmy Butler, looked bigger, more confident, pro potential, played to much inside for the
next level. Looked very confident.
3) Dwight Bucyks, coming on strong, shot the ball well, quick as a cat. Maturing as a player,
will get big minutes next year
4) Joe Fulce, looks like he is the player Buzz recruited, very active, quick to the ball, you can
tell a senior vs. a freshman. Would not be surprised if Jimmy and Joe are the forwards with
DJO, Otule and by mid-season Vander at the point.
5) Vander is not offensively ready yet, his form needs improvement, long, athletic, will fit perfect
with this team if he wants to play D and pass to the 2 stars.
6) Junior you can see is a playmaker but not sure if he will be the starting point, not as gifted athleticly
as the other 5 ahead of him. Can go to the hoop like Butch Lee.
7) Erik Williams athleticly is gifted, great bounce, needs to play, but not at center, power forward, the
kid is a load. Needs confidence, needs to play. Will surprise.
8) Devante Gardner, big body, will be a nice back-up, did not seem to hang with the other players yet,
seemed a little distant, long way away. I do not see him even as a back-up this year. Hope I am wrong.
Did not look fat.
9) Jamil Jones, can shot, decent body, will do a lot of clapping this year, has potential to be a star but not
with the group in front of him. Will hit some 3's.
10) Did not see Otule or Smith but it sounds they could help, add Crowder and you have at least 10
solid players.
Buzz has so much talent overall, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Deeper than ever. Glad
they will only have 12 scholarship players, as the 13th would never get off the bench.
I hope the following here he only signs 2 kid, maybe take another transfer. Next year they are already 10
deep. Could use 1 kid with a little height, 6'8" or so forward. Add Dawson, enough said.
Playground environment these kids are fun to watch, maybe better than the season. This teams needs
to get out and run, they have the tools to do that!
Thought i would share some observations on Day 1.
I was more focused on the unknown commodities and came away very impressed by Otule and JC.
JC was very much in control, without a doubt he is the starting point guard. He has great vision and quickness that allowed him to setup his teammates. He has got the best handles on the team and i think he should have a great year. He also has a good pull up mid range jumper that should be effective for him.
Otule has come a long way which has been documented. I overheard many of the players talking about only wanting to watch Chris and while they were at his game wanted him to touch the ball every time down the court. Much more fluid on the offensive end and also had a couple nice blocks and probably the best dunk i saw all day.
EWill surprised me a little, just oozes athleticism had two very nice blocks and a tip dunk off a missed 3 by DJO. What excited me the most was his jump shot he had very good form and rotation on it
I know he is not on campus, but Jae Crowder will probably be starting or the first sub for JB or Fulce early on. JC college player of the year will get his minutes.
Thanks all for the update.

Ditto. Dang I wished I was in Milwaukee this weekend to watch this!
Love the updates boys, keep them coming during this tourney. Always nice to get a MUBB fix in the summer.
Talk to "Homer" at the Pro-Am. He is worried about the PG spot. He said looked for Buycks to play at the PG spot.
Otule, looked strong and powerfull.
DJO, looked a bit faster and better handle of the ball.

I can see PG by committee if JC can't cut it, and that's a nasty thought. I have got to believe Buzz has confidence in him.
Some stats according to DJO's twitter:
DJO: 36 points, 11 rebounds
JB: 36 and 17
Buycks: 41 and 8
Smith: 30 points
Williams: 15 and 12

Not sure Wes will be able to play until his contract situation is settled. Last thing I imagine he wants to do is play and risk an injury before he gets his next contract signed.
THIS IS AWESOME!

Hence the roster asterisk.
Too bad jerel and DJ weren't there, or should I say, it's good they weren't there but on NBA summer teams
Once the contracts are signed by all the MU players, it would be a really interesting league adding
DJ, Jerel, Wes, Travis and Steve and who knows maybe a game or two of DWade and Lazar. Add
those 7and the league would be more fun than the real season! Maybe a few Badgers could show up,
Trevon, Butch, Tucker, Devon Harris, lot of talent around right now. Even those guys would love to
play a little uptempo!
Based on what I saw today, my starting lineup would be Butler, Williams, DJO, Cadougan and Buyckes. I saw parts of all the games, but I spent more time at court 1 than court 2. Court 1 had announcers and court 2 did not. That would be my only complaint about the tournament.
I heard from more than one person that they thought Smith had game, but the times I was watching him, he is was missing his shots. I saw maybe 15 minutes of Smith and O'tule's game. Physically O'tule looked good, but I saw him lose a couple of rebounds he had both hands on and another time a player reach from behind and knocked the ball out of his hands. Apparently I missed a lot of his good plays, because I concluded MU should stick with a small lineup. O'tule's team lost their game. I would start Williams at center. Williams is a much better rebounder and a better offensive player. O'tule would have the edge on defense.
DJO and to a lesser extent Buyckes could do whatever they wanted on offense.
DJO because of his three point shooting and strength is almost impossible to stop. Buyckes relies on his quickness to take the ball to the basket and is easier to defend, because he does not have DJO's outside shot. However, Buyckes was very impressive today.
Cadougan is the best passer on the team by far, but still does not show the ability to put the ball in the basket. Blue offense is taking the ball inside. I do not see Cadougan and Blue starting together, because their weak offensive game would allow other teams to concentrate on DJO. At this point I think Cadougan would make less mistakes than Blue, so I think he is the third guard in a three guard starting lineup.

How did Dwight do handling the ball? last season he seemed to lose the handle on his drives more often than we'd like?
I would rather see Williams play the 4 spot, D on the 5 for him would be hard, no way is as strong
as Lazar was. MU can go big this coming year with Crowder, Williams, Otule with Vander and DJO.
Maybe that is the starting line-up in 2011.
Now add Bucyks, Butler and Fulce. Solid 8 plus Cadougan.
We will really see how Buzz can coach this group, as he has a ton of depth!
DB showed great handles today all of the moves were quick, had a few TO's but nothing ball handling wise. I always thought DB was a pretty good ball handler anyways. DJO showed the most improvement in his ball handling and also mixed in quite a few pull up mid range shots which only make him more dangerous.
While I agree JC couldn't find the range today his quickness and strength allowed him to get to the lane quite a bit. He seems fully recovered from the injury, he even out jumped EWill for an offensive rebound today. I think he will be fine as the starting PG.
Granted i didn't watch much of Reggie's game from what i saw he was very quick a good handle and fearless in the lane. That being said didn't get Otule involved much in the post when he was open and he did shoot a lot, much more of a shoot first PG almost a polar opposite of Junior. As a side note, I would really be surprised if he was 6'0''

There were many guys not there who don't have the "asterisk" by there name.
Maurice Acker, Jerry Smith, Ben Hebl, Ricky Franklin, Marcus Jackson, Wesley Matthews, Trend Blacklege, JaRob McCallum, Quemont Greer, Avery Smith and Jamil Wilson. (I know Wilson is sick)

Homer said, he should be the PG.
Looks like the point guard spot is key for the upcoming season. Seems like there are plenty of weapons that the point guard doesn't have to be dominant, just smart. Which means Cadougan is in a good position, but still not sure Cadougan's going to be a 30 mpg player. So Buycks/Smith/Blue need to take advantage of that open playing time by learning to take care of the ball, play within the offense, and guard the other team's point guard. If they're going for the highlight reel and putting up shots all the time they'll miss out on 20+ minutes of open playing time.

guys, i was there for most of the day today. otule and reggie smith really stood out to me. obviously DJO did, but that's almost expected. i didn't expect what i saw out of reggie smith. WOW! i thought vander was quick, reggie is unreal! not afraid at all to go into the lane. he seemed a bit wild at times, but very fearless! i saw him drive right into the lane against 3 defenders, hit the floor, and have a smooth stroke making his 2 "money" free throws. he made everyone play up to his speed, which is really something considering he is a frosh.
otule, looks to be on a mission. looks better than barrow did in his senior season.
past player scott merritt, looked horrible! lol
Here's my "before I went and got drunk watching the World Cup" facebook updates. This is from what I saw of the 4 games... popping back and forth between them:
1. Great morning at the Milwaukee Pro-Am. Jimmy Butler and Chris Otule looked great!
2. Vander Blue looked timid. I heard Buycks was draining 3s, but I was watching the Butler+Blue game. Fulce was playing sloppy because his team was losing. Spent his time cursing instead of trying to get his game in order. E.Will played like he did last year... really disappointing. Reggie Smith disappeared on on team he was with, but he and DJO were chillin between games so that's a good sign. Butler and Blue seem to be BFF's (again between games), which is a good sign. Devonte Gardner is huge... and he chilled by himself after his game (he played the first game, so it was a good long time). I hope he buys into the program and finds an oldbie to hang out with and bring him into the fold.
3. Cadougan was driving as effortlessly as DJO, he just couldn't finish. I didn't even regognize him at first cause he slimmed down so much! He'll be dunkin like Mo Acker next year ;)
Happy Saturday folks :)
Edit: One of the things that I disagree with in this thread is that Barro helped out Butler and Blue's team. I feel that Butler and Blue won in spite of Ouse. Barro couldn't seem to get his feet to bring himself down court to help out on offense or defense on most plays throughout the game.
Also: The most hilarious part of the tourney so far-- Chris Grimm yelled out to a ref during his game that the other team was getting away with moving picks. I lol'd good and hard at that... but he played a great game tbh. If Wes shows up, with Grimm and Otule on his team, they'll run the tourney.
Tommy Brice also had about 15 fouls during his game. He's golden from the high-school 3-point line though. I think we should bring him on as a scholarship player.

JC is good passer and a bad shooter. I'll try to watch him more on Friday night.
With two games going on at once in two different gym, I was getting bits of the games.
It is pretty startling/revealing that Reggie Smith scored 30 and Junior didn't score. Granted, Junior is a pass first point guard, but this is quite a disparity. Should be really interesting to see how that battle plays out, and if Buzz can groom Reggie into a point guard - though I don't think being a point guard means you can't be a great scorer too..so maybe Reggie just would need to have his shoot first mentality dialed back just a little bit...yet maintain his offensive tenacity/agressiveness.

Where did you find the full box score? I haven't seen anything that indicated JC didn't score at all. ?-(
I took in a good portion of Saturday's event. While I didn't get to see every player (two gyms), here are a few impressions ...
Otule looked huge to me and his footwork and stamina seem to have improved.
Buycks is so quick and smooth. I told him he looked like he was in midseason form.
DJO is a flat-out star.
Fulce is a leader who will surprise some people in his senior season.
I know it's early, but this recruiting class will end up rivaling that of Jerel, Wes, DJ and Burke.
I can't remember the last time I have been more excited about a Marquette season. The future looks extremely bright.

There wasn't an official box score put out, but its been posted by several here and on the Scout site that JC didn't score - I think one mentioned he was 0-7. It was publicized by DJO (via Twitter) and on Gomarquette.com that Smith scored 30...
I think it is going to be tough to keep Smith's athleticism off the floor, and it sounds as though he is a much better shooter than JC already. JC is more the pure point guard type, that sees the floor really, really, well..which Smith does not at this point - according to the scouting reports..
C'mon Ners, Reggie already a much better shooter than JC?
It was 1 open gym game. And who knows, Reggie may be a better shooter, but to gleam that assumption from an account of some rando fan, is bit presumptious.
I clearly remember Junior scoring on a driving lay up to his right in less i am just going insane.
he pretty much did, til the ball rolled out. it was a nice move though.
A couple months ago, my son was playing AAU in Chicago and our ref was Mo Acker's dad. He said everyone's talking about all of the big-time recruits, but Reggie Smith was going to "blow-your-mind" with his quickness. He said he's a clone of DJames with a better shot and hops. I was skeptical. Good to hear he's in the mix and playing well.
Much thanks for the updates.
Better hops?
I hope so, but its hard to imagine.

Fair enough - wish I could be there for these games..to evaluate..all I can do is trust what's been reported here and on the Scout board...and also based on what I saw with Junior last year. I've been on the Reggie bandwagon since he signed with MU...so I'm probably biased..just think his athleticsim being off the charts will be an asset/dimension to the team that Junior can't provide - whereas Junior can provide a better floor game/passing/traditional point guard role..
+1 Ners

The SL is basically a NBA convention and recommend it to any basketball fans. All GMs, coaches, executives, and some players are walking around the lobbies between games and access is really easy. 2 years ago I had a general admission ticket and sat courtside at the Bucks game next to Skiles and Hammond.

Cadougan assits were limited by DJO. Once DJO got his hands on the ball, Cadougan was not likely to get it back. DJO knew he owned the defender.

wow absolutely no defense being played there. It's difficult to make any evaluations based on this. Fool's gold.
