You started 14 games on a 16-16 team, but didn't start six of the last nine games. Do you know why, or did you talk to Coach Kent about it: "I'm not really sure. I never asked Coach Kent about it, so I really couldn't tell you. I thought I picked up my performance in practice toward the end of the year a little bit more, but obviously not."

What the hell?   Never asked the coach why he wasn't starting?   Danger, Will Robinson.

Of course, then he goes on to say "I've never been a hothead. Well, maybe my freshman and sophomore years, but after that I matured and I embraced the game. I've always been a competitor.  That's what it is. I hate losing.."

A competitor would have asked the coach why he didn't start the last 6 of 9.

Or maybe the coach should have told him why he was being taken out of the starting lineup. Goes both ways and maybe Wilson should have asked.  Shows lack of communication between coach and players and maybe that is one reason why Oregon was so horrible the last few years.

And a true competitor would have said: "Coach with all the talent on this team, why are we playing just 50% ball?  In the Pac 10?  Just asking.  No, I don't want to be Creaned.  I don't even know what 'getting Boned' means.  Buzzcut?"

A freshman would have known better.

Or maybe Jamil was getting the Ryan Amoroso treatment.
Or maybe Wilson was being respectful toward his coach's decision instead of complaining about his playing time.
It seems we want it both ways.
If a player questions his coach's lineup decisions, he's a prima donna and a whiner.
If a player doesn't question his coach's lineup decisions, he's not a true competitor.

Listen, if you haven't, to his interview on the radio (I know radio guys are stooges - universally):

He sounds well spoken and thoughtful.  To some extent reminds me a bit of Wesley in interviews.  There seems to come through more there than in Rosiak's article.

As a freshman playing for a major program, I could understand why he might not question Kent.

I'm going off what was written.  There's a chasm of difference between "complaining" about your PT, and "asking" why it's disappearing -- which is the quote.

+1

I was raised that you never openly questioned a coach's decision.  You work your a$$ off and earn your way back into the rotation.

Either way, this one quote from Wilson reveals nothing about his motivations or character.

Read the quote again.

There were no comments about "questioning" a coach's decision.    He didn't "ask" about why his playing opportunities had decreased.   As you suggest, a player should "work his butt off and earn the way back" .. that's super.  Work on what?  Maybe you should ask the coach.  True, a good coach is going to be telling you, but apparently, Jamil didn't know, from his comments.

True, that may be smoke.

I don't see any problem with an 18 year old freshman not asking the coach why he is using him in different ways throughout the season.  The Ducks didn't make the tourney, and if Wilson wants to win, then he needed to trust the coach to shake up the lineup to try to get wins.

This is hardly a big deal.  MU is stacked at the guard and at the wing and I am happy to have a player who is going to accept his role with the team. He is going to be in a big battle for PT with Crowder, Jones, and EWill for time and we don't need players who are going to need meetings with the coach when they are in and out of the starting lineup.

I'm not suggesting that a player should do anything.  I'm saying that I never would have openly asked a coach about my playing time.  That doesn't mean I'm right and anyone else is wrong.  I just don't believe that we can somehow decipher Jamil's motivation or attitude based on his decision to remain silent.
