3 years! Last one of the draft!
CONGRATS LAZAR!!!!
WOW, this is awesome!!!
First round!!! That's awesome for Lazar and Marquette. And he's got a pretty promising point to play with ;)
Couldn't be happier for him!! Congrats, Lazar!!
So happy for him! Congratulations, Lazar!
I am so happy for him - one of my favorite players in MU history is having one of the best moments of his life. Way to go Lazar!
Wait...does #30 go to Chicago in the Kirk Hinrich deal? Is Lazar a Bull??????
Is he now the highest pick since wade?

I wish but no. The Bulls don't want to pay a first round contract. Maybe if they trade Deng too...
Being traded to the T-Wolves.

Is he now the highest pick since wade?
He is higher than Diener and Novak who were both in the second round. None of the Three Amigos got drafted.
This was Minnesota's pick, not Washington's.
Congratulations Lazar, great for him
Yes, and I won't lie that I welled up when I saw his name pop up on my iPhone. Hardworker...deserves all the love and lauds.

Yes, that was the Booker pick of Minnesota going to Washington. Then they swapped picks also.
Lazar is going to Wolves....
Sh*T. I turned away. What did Bilas and the boys say?
Zar... poster boy for hard work and attitude!!
This can do nothing but help MU with future recruits. There is something special in the MU "holy" water.

Great for him to get in the 1st round. Hope he has a long and successful career
What a great reward for Lazar! Great for him, great for the program. He deserves it

Stu asked Bilas if he can play at this level, Bilas said "Absolutely!" Called him low maintenance and willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.

So he has to play for Rambis?
Kidney shot.
Outstanding! Congrats to Lazar and his family. I heard Len Elmore saying Lazar Haywood may get drafted as well.
I believe the guy on ESPN just said all first rounders get a 2-4 year contract at a min. of a 1 mil. per year...nice payoff for his hard work.
Lazar HaywardSenior F Marquette
RealGM Analysis: Hayward can score a little bit, but he is one of those wings who has a best case scenario of 13th man.

I'm figuring Crean has already been interviewed by Katz and taken full credit for Lazar's position as a first rounder. Definately used his well connected NBA contacts.

It's 3 years guaranteed, with an option for 4, and the money is a predetermined number.

Never met Lazar...but I'm about as proud of him and happy for him as I can be. Such a great player for 4 years. Bided his time behind lesser players (not lesser athletes, lesser players) for three years and stepped up big time as a senior. He deserves this!
I'll bet his little brother is just about fit to be tied.
First Patrick Kane in the Stanley Cup and now Lazar in the 1st round of the NBA draft.
Party in Buffalo tonight!
Lazar's Contract:
Year 1 850,800
Year 2 914,600
Year 3 978,400
Year 4 - Option - 80.5% increase over 3rd year salary
Year 5 - Qualifying Offer 50.0% increase over 4th year salary
Wow, I was thinking mid-2nd, but I am gladly wrong.

Guaranteed is the operative word. Lazar will soon be a millionaire and never have to play a single minute of NBA basketball. Thank you Collective Bargaining Agreement!
Wanna know why Hayward got drafted? Check out the media guide. Look at the absurd improvement Hayward made in the weight room. This guy is a WORKER! The Wolves are going to love this guy.
Matthews found himself in an absolutely ideal situation, but I believe Hayward is a better player than Wesley. And he certainly has worked harder than any player Marquette has had...maybe ever.
This is just a great day to be a Marquette basketball fan!
nice!!!

Year 4 is team.
If the team excerices the option in year 4, the player becomes a restriced free agent after year 4.
Freakin. Awesome. Congratulations 'Zar.
Really proud of Lazar going much higher than I expected. Was excited to see him coming to DC but just as happy to see him in Minnesota since I grew up a Wolves fan. He will have a good opportunity to get some minutes there playing with Wesley Johnson.
Glad he got to a city with a good MU alumni presence.
just awesome. nothing else to say.
Congrats Lazar! The Marquette community is extremely happy for you! Show them what we have known 4 years!
Congrats to Lazar - couldn't happen to a better person than Zar. Well deserved, and glad all of his hard work paid off..especially with guranteed first round contract too.
Congrats, Lazar!
Missed the ESPN draft taking the wife and daughter to dinner. what did they say about him?
Good luck in Minnesota
CONGRATS, 'ZAR!! YOU DESERVE IT!!
Awesome for Lazar AND...as a bonus...went WAAAAY before Harangody!
Judging by the T-wolves current roster, Lazar should be able to wear his #32 still...unless he wants #24 like he did at the beginning of his MU career. both #s are available

Just send it to the University of Michigan Alumni Association
Listening to the draft on ESPN radio last night and Doug Gottlieb referred to Zar as a "true warrior"
Couldn't happen to a better kid.
Here's Decourcy's review of the Wizards pick of Lazar:
30. Washington Wizards (traded to Minnesota): Lazar Hayward, SF, Marquette. The Wizards ended the first round the way they began it: with a terrific pick of a high-character winner. Hayward is a dicey proposition from a position standpoint. He was a power forward throughout his college career, but he can shoot, plays aggressively and finds a way to make an impact. Whether he's fluid enough to flourish seems debatable.

My wife and I shouted so loud when Stern said "Lazar" that our 6 year old ran over and told us to be quiet because there's no shouting in the house.
I wonder how many of the players picked in the 30th position over the last decade actually made the opening day roster. I know David Lee was picked 30th a few years back, but I would guess that less than 50% of the players picked 30th ever play in the NBA.
Here are the #30 picks since the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats as the 30th team. Not a stellar bunch.
2009 - Christian Eyenga (Cavs)
2008 - J. R. Giddens (Celtics)
2007 - Petteri Koponen (76ers)
2006 - Joel Freeland (Blazers)
2005 - David Lee (Knicks)
2004 - Forfeited by Wolves
Congrats to Hayward and to Marquette.

They all make the opening day roster because of the guaranteed contracts now.
Not if they don't sign a contract...like Christian Eyenga. He never signed with the Cavs.

How odd.
I was listening to the podcast of Friday's Tony Kornheiser Show, and TK had Sam Smith on to talk about the draft. Smith said that Lazar might be the biggest surprise of the whole first round. Said he's not the best athlete around, but he's a really good basketball player.
I was hoping he would just be drafted. I figured he'd be middle of the second round but what happened last year made me pretty worried. After 4 years of watching him I should have known not to doubt Lazar. Congrats to him. Reading the tweets while watching that press conference it sounds like the fans already recognize what a great guy he is in the short time he's been there.
