Title: Will Basketball Schools Opt-Out of Big East???
Post by: GGGG on June 15, 2010, 08:53:06 AM
http://frankthetank.wordpress.com/2010/06/13/the-real-reason-why-notre-dames-hand-might-be-forced/

"A source with knowledge of the agreement that was entered into by the Big East schools following the ACC raid of 2003 states that in the event that 2 football members leave the conference, the football and non-football members can split the league without any penalty and retain their respective revenues, such as NCAA Tournament distributions.  What is surprising is that the Catholic non-football members comprise the faction that is pushing the issue.  If you recall, those schools met back in March to discuss "contingency plans".  Apparently, the Catholic schools have decided that they will exercise the split option if 2 Big East schools leave the conference (no matter who they might be) and have informed Big East commissioner John Marinatto as such."

(This guy has been fairly accurate about the entire conference reallignment issue since the Big Ten's initial announcement.)

Interesting.  I mean, if Syracuse and UConn get poached by the ACC, the hoops conference is still better with football/bball teams Pitt, WVU, and Louisville in it.  Even if they replaced UConn and Cuse with Central Florida and Eastern Carolina, that is still a decent conference.

Maybe if two schools leave, the hoops only Catholic schools think that the bball only conference is inevitable so why wait around.  I am not sure if I think that is the best thing, but I guess you could go either way.  Maybe certainty is better for recruiting than uncertainty.

huh? If two football schools leave, they will not be replaced. The bball schools will opt out and become a bball-only conference. I'd imagine a couple of A-10 programs would be added (certainly not c. florida or ECSU).

Btw, frankthetank has been anything BUT accurate. His posts are worth a read though because at least he doesnt pretend to have "sources" or "inside information."
