Poll
Question: When it comes to college football, who do you watch?
Option 1: Big 10 votes: 32
Option 2: SEC votes: 22
Option 3: Big East votes: 8
Option 4: Notre Dame votes: 11
Option 5: Big 12 votes: 8
Option 6: Pac 10 votes: 4
Title: BE football poll
Post by: goodgreatgrand on June 01, 2010, 07:54:00 PM
Since some of us were discussing (from a previous thread) what Tagliabue might do to be "proactive" when it comes to addressing the future of the conference, I thought I would insert a poll to get an understanding of what some of us think about BE fball.

Since fball drives revenue, what would make the BE product more palatable for football fans? If you dont watch now, why would you suddenly watch Memphis, ECU, UCF or some other 'mid-major' program if the conference were to expand? If a BE network was created, it really wouldnt matter, would it?

I left out 'I dont watch college football' as an option because you are obviously not part of the market (or viewership) that is trying to be sold on a product.

Wow, what a limited choice of options. You do know that a lot of Marquette grads come from Big 12 country, as well as from California (thus the Pac 10).

Nonetheless, I think most MU grads watch and root for the college football team they grew up watching. It is pretty hard for me to care about Big East Football without having any kind of rooting interest, as well as the fact that the most western schools are Louisville and Cincinnati.

Ok....so I added more options and reset the poll. The point was really just to see what the turnout might be for the BE....not what the voting would be for the Pac10 or Big 12 or whatever....

And I get your point about rooting for schools (conferences) that you grew up watching. That, of course, is a big problem for a conference such as the BE that is constantly trying to change its image and marketability....

I can muster the occassional Michigan game when they're not painful to watch but that's it.

But as far as viewing/competition, something that always gets me is the Big East's scheduling.  Is it really the best idea to try to be different (and fit into the TV slot)?  They always seem to have a bunch of games on Thursday or Friday nights...perhaps just ESPN promotion affecting my perception, but the marquee matchups get this slot as well.  Is it helping or hurting to try to be different and scheduling conference games not on a Saturday?  It can't be good for attendance.  Maybe it helps the TV ratings to be the only game on the box, maybe they just got backed into it because nobody would air the game when the better football conferences have Saturday timeslots locked down all day.

I have season tickets to Northwestern football, but only until MU brings it back.  Used to go to baaajr games but can no longer tolerate the rampant immaturity (especially as exhibited by the older alumni).  It is brought to Evanston every other year, but they usually leave in silence with long faces.

You have forgotten about the proud Vanier and Hardy Cup rivalries. Over the years, the U Alberta Golden Bears, U Calgary Dinos, Simon Fraser Clan, and UBC Thunderbirds have slugged it out in a way Michigan - Ohio State could only dream.

Which means you will never care about it because that will never happen.  Even a tournament of some sort will never fall under the oversight of the NCAA.

i am a second generation MU grad.  I am from Des Moines, Ia and live in Milwaukee.  I watch big ten football.  I don't care about the BE football as much because it is hard to root for Cincy and Louisville.  I admit to rooting for the Big East more as an underdog in the BCS bowls kind of like Boise State.  However it is a simple fact that the Big Ten would take a back seat to the Big East if my alma mater fielded football team.

I can't believe all the college football hate.  It's the best sport going in the US.  It's fans are much more passionate than college basketball fans and the gluttony of games on a college football Saturday guarantees that you'll have several thrillers.  Add in the fact that one loss essentially ruins your team's chance at a national title and every week is an absolute nailbiter.

As much as I love college hoops, you can't top the atmosphere of the big time college football game and I've been to the Final Four, multiple tournament sites, Rupp, Freedom Hall, Allen Fieldhouse, the Kohl Hole and many other venues.

Might have something to do with the blind eye turned to corrupt programs, or maybe the fact that D1 football threatens to essentially kill off big time basketball at schools like Marquette.

I used to watch a lot of college football, but I've soured big time.

I've been to football Saturdays on a B-10 campus, I've been to a football Saturday at ND.   If I never go to another one, I won't be missing anything.   Different strokes for different folks.    I can watch a conference tournament basketball game with two schools that I know no one on and enjoy the game and pick up on some perfect nuance that keeps me watching.   And I would rather do that than watch two football teams battle it out for 3rd in the SEC East or 4th in the B10.

Plenty of bad eggs in college basketball as well.  Look at UConn.  Football has 10x more players so the raw numbers are going to be much higher than basketball.  I do admit, football probably still has a higher % that get in trouble.

I can't figure out how to format Chapman's response with my response in it, so here it goes

Drunk & obnoxious - have you been to a recent MU-UW game at the Bradley Center?  Our students chant "Eff the Badgers."  I actually chuckle at that, but that fits the bill of drunk and obnoxious, plus vile.  At least they don't chant "Shoot him like a horse" like Badger fans

Tolerate corruption more than basketball fans - really?  John Calipari, Worldwide Wes, UConn, John Wooden's "friend of the program" during his dynasty.  Both sports have plenty of muck

NFL - sorry, I'm just not into watching diva WRs make the game all about them.  I can understand why people like the NFL, just not my cup of tea.

College Football Championship system - It's a mess, but that makes the regular season so much more fun.  Did you really want to watch TCU or Cincinnati play Alabama or Texas this year?

Disgusted at Camp Randall - hey, I can't stand the place either, waaaaay overrated.  They aren't football fans, they are drinking fans.  None of the students show up until half time and none of students know anything about football.  No college football games I've been to can top the white trash factor at the NFL games I've been to.  Anyone who has been to a Packer game can attest to the horror of sitting by a group of drunk middle age women with huge bangs.  [shudder]

I've been to dozens of games at Camp Randall (none in the student section) and a handful of games at Lambeau.  CR by far has a better atmosphere.  Lambeau is a beautiful stadium...not a bad seat in the house.  But the atmosphere seems very contrived...too polished.

And to me, that is the problem with the NFL.  There doesn't seem to be the "natural excitement" that you get with the college game.  I went to a Florida / Auburn game a few years ago in Auburn...probably the best atmosphere for any sporting event I have ever attended.

I would have loved to be at the Florida/Auburn game with you..., I believe it was outstanding.  Would have to be kidnapped to go to another game at Camp Randall- especially in the visiting school's section. (where are those cops when you need them?)  Greatest/most exciting game (college football) for me was the Northwestern/Michigan game at Evanston several years ago. (nat'l ESPN night double overtime sellout thriller)!

I hate College football. If I ran the world it would never have existed and basketball would be the number 1 money sport. but that aside this poll actually made me think. Perhaps all us football haters and fans of non football BE teams need to start being part of the solution to make BE football more appealing. How? by watching games. Heck we don't even have to really watch it just put it on your TV so that the BE gets more viewership. Having more people watch BE football can only help the conference.
