Title: Tagliabue sticks up for Marquette/Hoops only teams
Post by: Pakuni on May 26, 2010, 04:58:09 PM
Tagliabue disagrees that universities that only feature major basketball programs will be cast aside.

"I think Marquette and DePaul are important pieces of the Big East," he said. "Part of the strength of the Big East is that it's got schools in cities of all sizes and it's got a mix of football and basketball that's very strong."

Let's hope he means it.

Great to hear, but if it were true, money wouldn't talk, and bullshit wouldn't walk.

I disagree Tagliabue is a Georgetwon guy and the issue of being a conference constructed partly of BBall only schools has long been a tradition of the BE.

....which in turn has led to the long tradition of the BE being a day late and a dollar short when it comes to making heady decisions that impact the future of the conference. If the BE becomes proactive (or, more likely, reactive) I absolutely expect them to blow it (with regard to ANY decision they make).

Which, ironically, is probably the only reason why Marquette is in the conference in the first place.

Well it would appear Nostradumbass ( goodgreatgrand) already knows everything tagliabue has in plan for the conference and it is nothing but terrible.  So i guess we should all just kill ourselves.

My sole point was tagliabue is a Georgetown guy and should as well as anyone understand the situation of the BBAll only schools.  Not to mention the very fact that they have stated and the very reason they hired him...that is to not be as reactionary as in the past.

Uh...what?

His point is that the BE's historic loyalty to basketball has by and large weakened the conference when it comes to revenue generation in an era where football is king.

Well, I just dont see any decision they could make that would make me jump out of my socks. They're stuck between a rock and a hard place and clearly at the mercy of the B10, ACC, SEC, B12 and PAC10. So, I guess I would love to hear how they are actually being proactive. BE network? Yeah, people would love to pay to watch Providence vs. USF (I know there is more to it than that but i think you get my point. Besides, it wasnt feasible when they explored it a few years ago)...  Add ECU? Last I heard, Holtz skipped town. Memphis? Meh. Their academic standards didnt get them in the first time. It would seem too desperate. Ultimately, any mid-major type of football program is just going to piss off UConn, WVU, Pitt, Syr and Rutgers.

Maybe they are being proactive by finding all of the aforementioned schools new homes since it will likely happen sooner or later. Might as well co-operate with the other conferences and expedite the expansion process than sit around and wait for it to happen.

He could run the Angus portfolio for you up there in Indiana.  Or perhaps become Mbao's agent and put 30 lbs on him so you can ride him to NBA glory.

{Chuckling} That is precisely what I was going to say it.  If it wasn't for the Big East blowing it so many times, MU wouldn't even be in the conference, which was a reactionary measure in and of itself.

Exactly.  Proactivity doesn't create markets where none exist.  That is the main problem.  The BTN got more eyeballs to watch the games, but those people had a desire to watch those games in the first place.  The problem with the BE is that they don't have a lot of large, popular football programs, and basketball doesn't pay the bills.
