Title: Potential ND Rules Violation??
Post by: NCAARules on February 24, 2007, 08:40:04 PM
Not sure if anyone else noticed this - in the postgame interview, Brey talked about an assistant who saw his incoming freshman play in a pickup game over the summer.

Keeping that in mind, check out the attached rule

17.5.2.2 Prohibited Activities. Prior to the start of on-court preseason basketball practice per
Bylaw 17.5.2, members of the institution's coaching staff may not be involved with one or more
team members at any location in any of the following activities except as permitted in Bylaws
17.1.5.2.3 and 17.5.6: (Revised: 1/10/90 effective 8/1/92, 1/11/94, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97)
(f) Observing student-athletes in any basketball activities even if such activities are not arranged by the institution's coach. (Revised: 9/23/05)

Now, I'm admittedly a little miffed by the results of this afternoon's contest, but I'd be interested to hear how that happened.

Perrt sure that rule is only applicable to students who have already enrolled in college. Coaches watch commits play their HS games all the time.

Naivin - you are right about watching HS games ... that's termed an evaluation ... Two things which could potentially make this different: (1) Brey said it was after the guys got there in the summer, and (2) it was a pickup game - not a sanctioned event.

But upon further review: there is a carved out exception for summer pickup games.

My bad.
