Is there anybody out there?

Written by: noreply@blogger.com (Tim Blair)

After holding what amounted to open auditions for a big man over the last several months, Buzz Williams found his man in 6'8" bruiser Davante Gardner.  The Virginia product got the nod earlier this month after MU cycled through visits from Kevin Noreen, Gorgui Dieng, David Hahn, Steadman Short and presumably others.  Welcome to the remarkably wacky world of recruiting. It says here that MU isn't done building next season's roster, so stay tuned.

Gardner talks about his decision to attend Marquette here (http://www.wavy.com/dpp/sports/king%27s-fork-hoops-star-big-east-bound).  To make room for the latest recruit Yous Mbao left the program (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/93963594.html).

Other updates of note:

Finally, please consider sponsoring or participating in the 2010 Warrior Day Golf Outing (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2010/04/2010-warrior-day-golf-outing-is-coming.html).

Other updates of note:
  • Marquette University graduate Wesley Matthews is set to cash in as a free agent this summer (http://blogs.sltrib.com/jazz/index.php?p=16245&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1).  $34M anybody?  Crazy money - good for him.
  • Dominic James wrapped up a successful season in Turkey and spoke with the Richmond paper about his experience (http://www.pal-item.com/article/20100516/NEWS01/5160328/ONE-GOAL).
  • MU signed a home and home with Vanderbilt (http://www.blogger.com/MU%20home%20and%20home%20http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/93720959.html).
  • Also, please check out this well-written 'eulogy' on last season by Cian O'Day (http://cianoday.com/misc/2010/05/20/apology-of-a-dispensable-mascot/). Good stuff.
  • Rosiak catches up with MU signee Jamail Jones (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/94601099.html).
  • The Anonymous Eagle opines on Lazar Hayward (http://www.anonymouseagle.com/2010/5/19/1478374/lazar-hayward-does-the-nba-dance)'s NBA chances.
  • ESPNU recently covered the NBA Draft Camp in Chicago and had this segment on Lazar Hayward.

Excellent job shooting there by Lazar, with the eyes of Pat Riley right behind him. Im not sure what pick Miami has in the second round, but wouldnt be surprised to see Riles go after a big bodied good shooter like Lazar.

The Wes Matthews factor here should not be underestimated, cause as they said, Wes shoulda likely been a first rounder with his production. Although I think he is less athletic and obviously not as good as a perimeter defender as Wes, I believe Lazar is a better shooter and obviously a better rebounder. Also, compared to Novak, he is not as good of a shooter but likely a better defender and rebounder (despite the height difference). That said, I don't know how well he will be able to defend NBA 3's, and there are planty of good shooters in the NBA, but not as many good defenders. As Wesley showed, solid defense will get you on the court if you are a role player, since you aren't needed to score too much with the stars on your team (although hitting an open jumper will help getting you some PT)

Also, I haven't seen the kid too much, but why is Gordon Heyward so hyped up? Maybe I am missing something, but Lazar looks to have the better body, even though a few inches shorter, and seems to be just as good of a shooter. Maybe i just havent seen heyward enough
