Poll
Question:
Which of the Big East members is the most likely/desirable expansion target of B10?
Option 1: Notre Dame
votes: 22
Option 2: Rutgers
votes: 6
Option 3: Pitt
votes: 5
Option 4: Syracuse
votes: 3
Option 5: UConn
votes: 1
This poll has limits and is not not perfectly suited for the issue--such as the one vote limit, the inability to rank the 3 most likely(as a group)....and not enough space to add poss B12 schools, but,
as its interesting to see the names kicked around by everyone,
lets see if democracy names a front runner and the dark horses. Enjoy
NOTE: I realize most desirable and most likely are different points-- but the poll assumes B10 can get whomever they most desire
Likely - Probably Pitt or Rutgers
Desirable - Easy one, Notre Dame. Everyone wins. Big Ten wins by getting the school with the highest marginal revenue out there: a school that itself will provide a ton of revenue and also the revenue spike from a conference championship game - and would be the get most likely to stop expansion at 12 teams. Big East wins because it stays together and can get another football school to balance the schedule. Notre Dame wins because it gets its head out of its rear end for once.
I would be happy with any scenario where only one Big East team leaves. I think we could survive that and it would limit the amount any other conference wanted to expand since they won't have to compete with a 14 team football conference. I think Rutgers is most likely, I believe they have the AAU status and gives the Big Ten an opening to the New York/New Jersey market. It seems like they are the ones that are talked about a lot too.
From most reports, Rutgers is the one getting serious consideration based on the evaluations that the Big Ten has already done. Academics, TV revenue, athletics (well getting into the Big Ten will take care of that right?)
If Rutgers wants to go, let them go, who would miss them?? The problem will come in if a Syracuse or a Pitt leave. Then you are starting to diminish the conference just a bit.

The football schools would miss them, and they'd have to be replaced by someone who hasn't been as good the last few years that would be outside the traditional Big East base.
