Title: Lend Lease Big East Football: How to preserve a great Bball conference
Post by: KipsBayEagle on April 30, 2010, 11:47:27 AM
With all the talks, discussions, closed door meetings, and hyperbole, one thing is clear by now, expansion is inevitable, and the Big East must be proactive in finding a solution for the sake of survival.  this is typically where I would sdtart a catholic Conference Bball thread, but I'm not gonna do that this time (for the record, still an awesome idea).  instead, i have discovered a solution that would work perfectly for everyone involved.  Behold the power of Lend Lease Big East Football.

In essence, we are keeping the big east entirely intact for every sport with the exception of football.  Basketball, soccer, synchronized swimming, will not be touched by this, and will allow the traditional big east schools to maintain their rivalries.  What we are doing however essentially is disolving big east football entirely.  By doing this, we allow football programs to partner up with other conferences FOR FOOTBALL ONLY, partake in the revenue that comes from being a football member of these conferences, while maintainging big east basketball.  Just look how the dominoes would most likely fall.

Big Ten:  Pitt, ND, Rutgers

SEC:  West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Florida State

ACC:  South Florida, Syracuse, UCONN, Cinncinati

Big 12 is already large enough, and this could switch the big east's bcs status with the mountain west, making that contingent happy.  I can't tell if this is a stroke of genius or laughable, but I feel that it makes the most sense, since many of these conferences A. Only care about the football side of things  B.  Really just want to add teams in the conference for revenue/ bowl games and C.  The big east schools are hesitant to do this only because of how it would impact their other sports programs/ tradityional rivalries.  thoughts?

How did VaTech and FSU get mixed in with the Big East schools? Couldn't they simply stay in the ACC but send USF and Cincy to the SEC?

Obviously this whole scenario would never happen but it's at least somewhat entertaining to talk about.

(Slow day today, Kips?)

I think it's a great idea from a Big East point of view, but it comes down to negotiating power, and we don't have any.  I don't see the Big Ten playing our game.  It's their ball, and they're making the rules.

Very slow yes.  At least I put some thought and ideas into this post, instead of threads like "I saw Jimmy Butler taking a crap at Marquette Gyros last night.  That dude is tall."  And the reason some acc teams are in the sec is because the sec is looking to poach certain football teams if scenarios play out, not just grab what they can.

My intent was not to belittle you or your post. I just noticed that you've started several entertaining threads today so I assumed you were slightly bored.

I just get the impression that the potential monster conferences, the Big Ten, SEC, and Pac-10 won't be satisfied with football. They'll get their football monopoly, all well and good, but will eventually turn to basketball as well. It's the NCAA's biggest revenue producer, so it would only make sense that they will try to poach as big a chunk from that pot as possible. To do that, they'll need to have large basketball numbers as well. I'm not saying this is a bad idea, but I think that if there's money to be made off it, these 800-lb gorillas will look to take every dime in the room, and that means 16 basketball teams as well.

The only thing that gives me mixed feelings about that is that one of the knocks on the big east is that it is too large for basketball, and it is considered by many to be the only drawback of the bball conference

The B10 will want to be for all sports because it is that much more programming for the BTN.
