Title: What are rules for coaching/camps to nuture the bigs?
Post by: HouWarrior on April 24, 2010, 03:08:30 PM
 Guy V Lewis taught Hakeem Olajuwon the five option foot move, known as the dream shake (Kobe came into Hou last summer to learn it from Hakeem), and Hakeem had the best feet I've ever seen on a Big man.
Guy told me he learned all of that from Pete Newell and he never stopped his praise/reverence for Pete (claiming pete broke down foot position and balance to nine main bones in the human foot!).

There is still an annual Newell Big Mans' camp in Hawaii for pros and HS seniors--any big man MU has/ gets  would benefit...BUT

What are rules on skills camps--and on bringing in special coaches (incl offseason);
....before and after commit to NCaa school;
....can school pay, in any scenario?
.... can an elite camp before commitments bring in newell's guys?
... can a program looking for bigs sponsor a summertime bigs camp?

So much is posted about big's development/relative skills---I am curious on this

Thanks much

First requirement is that you have to have a big man.

Give Pete Newell a couple weeks with Otule and we may well have one.

If I were sent to spend a couple of weeks with a dead guy, you'd better believe that I'd improve just to avoid having to do it again the next year.

Brings a new meaning to the phrase "big stiff".....

A lot of places have big man camps.  I think the problem with most bigs these days is that they want to play facing the basket, and have the athleticism to do so in high school, but then don't have the skills to play back to the basket when they get to school.  A week at a camp can help a little, but two years of working on their skills in practice will help more.  That is why I think Otule is going to end up doing just fine.

Milwaukee West High still exists!  It's now Milwaukee High School of the Arts.  Not to be confused with West Milwaukee High School, which no longer exists.
