A roundup of Alabama's status during the spring period written yesterday talked about Cothron and mentioned other bigs that Alabama is now looking at. In the comments section following, someone had this to say:
"Telep and Meyer seem to think we have backed off Cothron due to serious grade issues. I think Jason Carter is our best best."
Telep is a talent evaluator for Scout, and Meyer does the same for Rivals.
If he doesn't qualify at Alabama where the combined SAT verbal and math scores average 900, forget about him for MU.
That is unfortunate.

Looks like Cincy or LSU unless he wants to play football for Bucky

Then he can go an be an honor roll student like John Clay...
Yea... You have to be borderline retarded if you can't get into Alabama as an athlete.

I was being literal though... My brother and plenty of my friends go to Alabama and I hear some pretty funny stories about the BS classes they have for athletes.
Does Marquette have any classes that are designed to raise a basketball player's GPA?

LOL! I'm not sure why that's in teal. John Clay literally was an honor roll student last semester at Harvard West and yet he couldn't stay eligible to play football at Racine Park High School, which I might as isn't the best academic institution in the world. But UW doesn't make exceptions academically for its student athletes. And they would never recruit players who would get in trouble (**cough** steal computers, beat up women) ::)

If DWade would have made the honor roll at MU, we would have been bragging up Wade and his hard work. But when someone similar makes the honor roll at UW, we make fun of the kid.
Lame...

Actually, if you know/knew any of Clay's teachers at Park....you'd know the truth about his academic capabilities. For him to now be on the honor roll at UW-Madison is similar to Clark Kent - Superman.
Mocking isn't necessary, but there are all kinds of idiots on all kinds of message boards.

No, I will continue to mock...sorry. The point whether or not Clay legitimately deserves to be on the honor roll. The point is that people can be so hypocritical.

I meant mocking Clay's being on honor roll. Mocking hypocrites is a worthwhile endeavor....it should be encouraged!

Marquette, like every other serious athletic program, has joke classes created for athletes. Athletes get to register first so they get priority for all these classes. I don't think there's much difference between major athletic programs in that regard.

Actually no, there is a somewhat set curriculum for everyone at the University. BB players are not excempt from these classes. I had plenty of classes with basketball players... some more serious than others.
Examples:
English 2 with Wade
Acting for non majors (not the blow off class I thought it would be) with Merrit, Ron Howard, and ODB
Theo 001 ODB, and Merrit
History of Jazz!!! yes total blow off class. 2 players, but I only went to class 3 times so I can't remember them. :)
My Roomate had many classes with David Diggs (engineer)
To be honest, there aren't very many blow off classes available at MU. Marquette doesn't offer BS degree's in "agricultural journalism" or "basket weaving" like many other schools do.
Actually, there is a great deal of difference between athletic programs/universities in terms of academic offerings. While it is true that student athletes at Marquette have preferential treatment when it comes to registering for classes (this is primarily intended to avoid conflicts with practices), we do not have any courses that have been created solely for student athletes. Also, we do not have a physical education program, therefore we do not offer badminton as does Ohio State, nor do our coaches teach courses for their athletes as has Duke in the past. Finally, our student athletes do not receive academic credit for their athletic participation, which does occur at many universities.
I had classes with Tony Miller, Ron Curry, Robb Logtermann, and Jim Macillvaine. All were in Comm (Tmill or Ron) or Busi (Robb/Mac) IIRC.

I was an athlete at Marquette and a tutor in the athletic department for three years. Yes, of course athletes are still required to fulfill the curriculum requirements for graduation that apply to every student. I would also agree that state universities with football programs like Alabama offer more joke classes than MU as they have many more athletes to accommodate.
History of jazz is essentially a joke class created for athletes and they get first priority to register. There are a few others. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, but when people act like so many other schools create an easy road for athletes and Marquette is above that they are deluding themselves.

Called the Comm School.
(Yes, I'm a PR major)
They also have really involved tutors.
D. James was in a design class and gave a final presentation. The design was really good and when asked by other students how he did certain stuff, he kind of shrugged and said he got some help with that part.
It really doesn't matter what school these kids go to, it all depends on if they want an education or not. Patrick Patterson is at Kentucky of all places, but he stayed last year partly to graduate in 3 years. You hear about guys getting as many majors as possible during their 5 years of eligibility. Others don't learn a thing and end up overweight, living in a van in hicksville West Virginia.
I hesitate to even say this for fear of turning this thread into an anti-Crean rant, but supposedly one of Crean's complaints was that the University was not doing enough to accommodate the basketball players academically. They never created the classes he wanted for them but eventually appeased him by bringing in new academic support people who were only assigned to the basketball team and there was a separate team for the "non-revenue" athletes.

Haha I was mocking the fact that UW fans seem to think that their standards are so far superior to Marquette's (and many other schools) in every way. To think that they don't give preferential treatment to their student athletes is an absolute joke. Almost every school, including Marquette and UW at Madison, does.
But you're right, I'm just an idiot so who cares?
