Title: Sampson's effect has 2 programs down OU and IU--should NCAA life ban coaches?
Post by: HouWarrior on April 17, 2010, 12:18:48 AM
Much is noted here on IU's problems-- some of which are still leftovers of Sampson's tenure ....OU is also still bad shape (see link)

Will/should  NCAA ever hold coaches liable, with personal bans/suspensions--for life?

How can Calipari continue in a key program like UK after 2 final four teams are vacated due to violations?

Coach Norman Dale in "Hoosiers" was banned for life and NCAA agreed to honor his ban... just for a player assault in a NY high school---the movies are tougher than real life!
Go Hickory and their Rivals 5star Jimmy Chitwood (currently recruited by Butler and IU-lol).

BTW, Buzz's Houston HS coaches contact circle is traced back to the Milan 1954 team of "Hoosiers" fame--
A player on that team, Ron Truitt, came to houston, & coached Cy Fair High to a state bb championship in 1971. He was also a school principal and my kid attended a junior high named for him.
Coach Truitt spoke to and helped convince Randy Gillmer (indiana hs star and hs sports hall of fame member) to come here and coach at Cy Springs high--where K Bradley (MU)played for him. Gillmer is now at Nimitz high, a hs BB power on the SW side.
Asst to Gillmer was John Harmutek, now head coach at Cy Springs, who coached E Williams(MU).
John Harmuteks brother also now coaches at Klein Collins....
so....
The coaching tree seeded in the Milan miracle of "Hoosiers" fame has born 2 MU recruits....so far

Sampson is banned from the NCAA.  I believe for 5 years.  Todd Bozeman was banned for a number of years after the Cal incident as well.

I wasnt aware of Sampson ban---good (Sorry if my premise for thread is a bit faulty)
I thought Bozeman was just a PAC 10 ban-- he is back with Morgan state--yes?
What is the rule/grounds on which coaches are subject to/risk a NCAA ban?
Can any be banned for life?

Yes, and Calamari should be at the top of the list.

Neither Sampson nor Bozeman were technically banned, the NCAA doesn't do that.  Instead they were both placed under the NCAA Show Cause Penalty, meaning that any school wanting to hire them must appear before the NCAA Infractions Committee and show why they should not penalized for wanting to hire a coach who has already committed known violations.  No school has ever done that, so it's effectively the same as banning them, but they could in theory have been hired during that period.  Sampson's show cause penalty was 5 years, Bozeman's 8 years.

As far as I'm aware there aren't any lifetime bans for coaches, but there are several for players.

Poor wording in that article.  The actual penalty wasn't a ban, it was a 5 year "show cause penalty" effective November 2008 to November 2013.  While it has the same effect as a ban because no school is dumb enough to go to a show cause hearing, it wasn't actually a ban on him coaching in the NCAA.

If the NCAA were to "ban" a coach, they would be inviting a lawsuit, and potentially one in which they would be charged with violating a "fundamental" constitutional right.

While a school might not like that the guy they would hire as a coach has been put on a "show cause" list, they - as a result of the NCAA membership agreement, I'll bet - are almost certainly stopped from suing over the issue.  Meanwhile if the coaching candidate wanted to sue over being put on the show cause list, he/she would have to overcome the presumption that if he/she were a fit coaching candidate, a school would have hired them and passed the show cause hearing.

Did UTEP have to do that to hire Tim Floyd?

as of UTEP hiring date NCAA had not ruled yet on the OJ Mayo/$1000 bribe issue--
I would guess not,

...but (as Indiana had to accept Sampson w/NCAA warning and conditions on his then unresolved OKla violations), one would presume NCAA warned UTEP to be on its toes--and that  they're watching Floyd
