Jerel McNeal was inteviewed first (I like this feature). Crean coming next.
- Caught up in 2 different teams, 1st & 2nd half. Not enough energy in 1st half -- letting HC eat time off clock 1st. Came out with energy in second, but had to catch up at that point.
- Need to bring energy, if everybody is on the same page, and everything starts with D, then that will lead to offense. Esp with fast break
- Rough shooting night tonight - probably due to missing on defense. Couldn't get things rolling for shooting, but they will play through that and win.
- In second half they kept pushing HC's guards out. Weren't going to let HC change MU's style of play in second. Forced them to make tough passes, and pressure the ball.
Jerel:
We got caught up... two differnet teams... 1st half no energy and they slowed us down... 2nd half we turned up the intensity
We need to work on bringing energy... get defensive stops and starting the fast breaks... we were missing on defense tonight and that led to easy baskets... it was a bad shooting night for us... their princeton style offense threw us off in the 1st half.
Coach Crean
intensity has been the story going back to last year with alabama game... our four last games have lacked intensity (alabama, kstate, cardinal stritch, & hillsdale)... we haven't realized that defense is what is going to make this team work... it's how we practice but it doesn't carry over to games... it's gonna be that way for a while with a team led by sophmores... 2nd half defensive intensity turned up and we pulled away... strength of the club last year was moving the ball and we're not doing it this year and thus we're not getting the open 3 looks... he doesn't want to change line-up now but he may have too... game plan was to wear #10 on hillsdale down and let #21 get his... gtown and w. virgina run similar plays... we're not very good right now... we're not playing hard... energy & talk weren't there in the 1st half... didn't want to make any changes in 1st half... wanted the team to work it out themselves.... we've got to get better... it doesn't matter who we're playing... we need to come our and play our game.
idaho state has a very good big man... pg had 25 points in exhibition game... very well coached... they'll stretch MU out... it's gonna be a battle until we get better... props to the students & crowds with the bad weather... we need everybody's support as the team learns how to play.
Crean Comments:
- Have had to pick up intensity past 3 games (including 'Bama game). Comes down to mindset, need to get better offensively. Don't have the seniors that know what it takes to win. Not about playing up or down to opponent. Calling card has to be defense, energy, intensity, rebounding, etc. They were trying to get things going with offense rather than defense which is the wrong mindset. Like Marquette changed people at halftime. They have a win to show for it, but no the offense. Talked about 3 sophomores having a bad offensive game.
- MU needs to do a better job moving the ball, have watched tapes on this, in order to get better 3 point shots. Very correctable, but they need to correct the mindset. Part of being young is that they don't come to the game in defense and sharing the ball mindset.
- Wanted to wear down HC from the beginning. MU will see this type off offense from GTown, etc. Need to talk during defense - it was apparent in 2nd half, not apparent in 1st. Crean noticed it in first half, but didn't say anything until halftime. Wanted people to learn themselves that they were playing themselves in or out of the game.
- Monday game will be a battle.
- Even with crappy weather, students were awesome. MU won't win games without the crowd. MU needs to learn to play with energy, and learning to come out and play with 2nd half effort.
Thanks...you got some things I missed (I type slow :( )
With all the hype this team has received, it is easy to forget that we are a very young and inexperienced team for the most part.
How about those students? Damn....
JM interview -- Rocky's notes are my notes almost to the T.
TC interview --
Intensity is the story for the last 3 games (AL, CS, and tonight). Bottom line is getting the right mindset. This year they don't have 3 or 4 seniors who have been through it. Young guys need to understand it's defense, intensity, and energy. The D starts the O. They practice that way, but need to bring it to the games.
3 sophs played with no energy in the first half. The second half had better intensity.
Brought in a former coach for the Bucks, Mike Turnbow (sp?). He said penetration is for the other guys. <<I thought that was interesting>>. They need to move the ball on offense. Share the ball. They are still young and will the correct mindset -- share the ball.
Game plan was to wear down HC's #10. We might have played down to HC. We didn't make it a personnel game, but made it a system game. There was no communication. No fire. TC knew it after 10 minutes. He decided to let the first half play itself out. He wanted to see who was going to play themselves out of the lineup (or words along those lines).
Looking to Idaho St. -- they have a very good big man; point guard scored 25 pts in an exhibition the other night; 31 shoots the ball well. They will try to spread us out.
Gave props to the students and crowd for showing up on a night with bad weather. We are going to need the crowd to be behind the team all year long.
at least we're all consistent... ;D Seriously between the three of us, I think we captured everything they said.
Yeah Crean's comment on how pentration is 70% for the other person kinda gave me a wtf moment! Crean is already thinking about the post game :-*

That whole sequence threw me off. I'm writing, I'm trying to think of who the coach was, then the 70% thing was thrown out there... just kind of head scratching at the time.
