Not in the prior rumors, UH goes w/ Dickey, who preceded Bobby Knight w/ Red Raiders. Dickey won there (w/grade scandal) and hasnt been a head coach for awhile. Not a great job, not a great coach-- but C USA has dropped off-its the conf of redemption for coaches w/prior problems

I haven't found many alumni that like the selection. He's been out of head coaching for almost 10 years. He isn't known to have any recruiting skills. I'd love to see UH get back to the Lewis years but I doubt Dickey is the man for the job.

I would have much preferred they hire Marlin who was at Sam Houston and went to Louisiana-Lafayette. Anyway, best of luck to the Cougars.

I'm thinking that for where this program is right now, he's a really good hire.  While the Houston AD gets to the real work of raising the cash and doing the building necessary to get the school some decent (or better than decent) facilities, he should keep the program in solid shape for the CUSA.  Down the road when Houston with the benefit of improved facilities might be ready to step up, he may/should be ready to retire.

There was a lot of thought going into why they hired Dickey....his age was part of it.  Mack wanted someone that wasn't going to jump ship in the next 5 years.  Money was most certainly part of it, but Mack will never say that.

This blurb here in the USA Today is very relevant

In the red at Houston

But some athletic departments still operate like they have a university credit card.

Between 2005 and 2007, the once-formidable University of Houston program spent $20 million more than it brought in — even when accounting for student fees and university money. Only when the university kicked in substantial additional support over the next two years could the department balance the budget.

Altogether, over the last five years, the university has covered $43 million in athletic expenses while student fees have covered $21 million. And the athletic department still is facing an $8 million accumulated debt — $6 million in operational funds and $2 million to restore endowments that no longer cover the costs for which they were intended, according to executive vice president for administration and finance Carl Carlucci.

Carlucci says the athletic department is expected to pay it back eventually but in the meantime the university will continue to write checks without requiring spending cuts beyond a 5% decrease all Texas schools may have to make this year and next.

"I do recognize that there is a reason institutions invest in athletic programs," Carlucci says, referring to the positive public attention that schools seek in exchange for the type of financial risk Houston is taking.

Carlucci says the university's budget office staff is now deeply involved in athletic budgeting matters, demanding plans for increased fundraising and attendance, plus the negotiation of better concession, royalty and travel contracts. "We ask tough questions. We make them unhappy every day," he says.

But when football coach Kevin Sumlin became a target for other schools after Houston went 10-4 this season, he got a new six-year contract that for 2010 includes a 60% increase in the guaranteed amount to $1.2 million.

"We're not going to handicap the (athletic) program, because a losing program will be worse for us" in terms of the athletic department's ability to pay down its debt, Carlucci says. "We have an AD (Mack Rhoades, in his ninth month at the school) who we think can make that investment pay off, and we're going to give him support."

Dickey wasn't the first choice. Rhodes wanted Gillespie and he was prepared to take the job. However, UH used a search firm. It was the same one that hired Rhodes. That same search firm recommended Gillespie for Kentucky. His conduct there cost UK $5M. The search firm opposed Dickey's hire and the UH prez allowed their suggestion of Dickey to stand.

The alumni are furious. They were willing to kick in the extra bucks to raise the salary to $2M per year but won't offer a dime extra to the negotiated contract of $500,000 per year for 5 years. Apparently they could have had the BYU coach or Marlin who went to UL-L. Both were advised the job was slotted for Gillespie until Rhodes was overruled. I've been told that he is so pissed that he may well be gone within 18 months.

Interesting stuff-- I had not heard/read anything of David Rose BYU coach-- he was a gaurd/co captain of Phi Slamma Jamma and unlike Clyde D, has shown he can work/coach. He would have been exciting hire for many of us from that era, esp if Reid Gettys joined  as asst.

Was the AD prior to Rhoades fired or jailed???

My bad. The search firm opposed Gillespie, not Dickey. They recommended Dickey who was hired.

I've been told that Rose was dying to return to coach UH. As for Getty, he's a very successful attorney. But he was willing to coach UH if offered the job. It wasn't. Add all the facts of the demise of UH basketball, most of the alumni, especially the well heeled ones who are numerous. don't look for any improvement in the near future.

BTW. Penders knew he was on his way out before the infamous NYT column. It will be interesting to see where Penders ends up. I'd be willing to bet it's not a step up from UH. The best I see for him is assistant on a big time program.
