Title: Pitt Fan Looking for Hotel Recommendations
Post by: DGORE#33 on March 15, 2010, 07:47:10 PM
Congrats on your NCAA Bid!! I think that your team is going to surprise some people in the tournament with your style of play. I also think that Mr. Buzz Williams is a very good coach and proved it this year after losing so much.

I was wondering if any one on the board could recommend hotels or areas that would be good to stay in this weekend. I have been on all of the travel sites but I am not sure which areas/hotels are a good fit for my family to stay at.

Any help would be appreciated.

Good luck!

Hyatt is the closest but I'm guessing that is an official hotel and rooms might be hard to come by.  Hilton is close and might be a good choice there is also a new Loft hotel within walking distance and closest to bars around the Bradley Center.  Courtyard downtown would be ok.  Metro is the coolest and within walking distance so is the Intercontinental.  A local place that has small suites at a good price is the Knickerbocker but a long walk.  Stay away from the Ramada.

If you are down to a few post again and someone can tell which of the choices is the best.

Depending on the age of your kid(s) the Milwaukee Hilton has a water park and you can walk to the games from there. Hyatt, Hotel Intercontinental, Hotel Metro and the Pfister are all nice hotels and safe bets.

i usually stay downtown for game weekends... The Hyatt is the best as it's the closet and the most comfortable beds.  The Hilton is really nice and probably on the same price level as the Hyatt.  The new @Loft is really nice and trendy as it's brand new.  however if you don't get it on priceline, it can be pricey.  those are the 3 closet to the bradley center.  The courtyard, double tree, and ramada are all around the same distance from the arena and a little more reasonably priced.  Good luck Pitt and keep the BE moving through the brackets

I go back to Milwaukee for one or two games a year and only stay at the Iron Horse.  Not really a family-oriented place and you can definitely find cheaper options, but one of the few really nice boutique hotels in Milwaukee.

There's the Iron House, which has very unique decor

Also just south of downtown on the lake is Sheridan House
great bistro cafe style restaurant

The Hilton w/the waterpark is convenient and nice

Thanks for all of your replies.... I have been on most of the internet sites for travel and most of the downtown hotels are booked. Are there any suburbs or areas close by that would be safe for me, my wife and two kids to stay?

Thanks again!

Iron horse is a very nice hotel in a safe area, just like most of them down town.

There are many chain hotels out near the airport, (Mitchell Field), and that is only about a 15 minute drive into the city.  You might also want to ask the question on tripadvisor.com, on the Milwaukee forum, as people there may have more suggestions as well.

If you can't find anything you like in milwaukee, I'd try Brookfield, WI and the Hampton Inn or Brookfield Suites which is near a Champs and Outback Restaurant and now a Hooters(b-field's big time now baby!).  And the Brookfield Mall if the wife wants to do some shopping.

It's allso right off I 94, it'd take about 20 minutes to get downtown from that suburb.  Most safe and clean suburb of milwaukee probably.

The Marriott WEst is very nice though it is located in Waukesha and therefore 20-30 minute drive. Nice pool for the kids.

If you can't be downtown, I'd recommend the suburb of Wauwatosa. It takes about 15-20 minutes to get downtown but it's an easy trip on the highway or the back roads. There's a Radisson that is serving as a tournament hotel, but also a Holiday Inn Express that usually has good rates. They're typical of the Radisson and HIE chains - nothing flashy, but clean and nice. Both are close to Mayfair mall and Dave and Busters if you need to kill time. Brookfield isn't a bad option either - just a little further west than Wauwatosa. I've stayed at the Courtyard - again nothing flashy, but clean and nice.

Generally, I'd stay away from the airport hotels. They're not bad, but when there have been problems it's been in that area.

Bunch of hotels in Brookfield which is 25 minutes west but a straight shot on 94 to downtown.  Courtyard, Country suites, Brookfield suites (old Embassy suites), Doubletree, Hampton Inn.  All ok chain suburban hotels.  Lots of strip mall restuarants nearby like Fridays, Chilis, etc.

Another option near downtown and next to MU is the Ambassador, a restored art deco hotel.  area right around the hotel is ok but don't wander too far west.  They might also have a shuttle to the Bradley Center.

Another option is the County Claire an Irish guest house near the lake that has about 30 rooms, in laws stay there a lot and like it.  Good area and great bar.

If you are a member of a club you might have reciprocity with either the Milwaukee Athletic Club or the University Club both have hotel rooms at reasonable prices.

Sometimes calling the hotels works when there is no availability on the web.

I definitely recommend you stay in the Double Tree Hotel right on Wisconsin Ave. and 6th street I believe. It has nice, comfortable rooms at a very reasonable price and I believe it was recently remodeled. It is within walking distance of the Bradley Center (only 3 or 4 blocks North on 6th street).

Have fun and good luck

check out County Clare, The Knickerbocker or the Astor.  not too far away from the BC but cool places to stay.

Also, Clarion hotel and Hilton Garden out at ParkPlace (northwest of downtown) are enough out of the way to be overlooked by many people.  15 minutes to downtown.

Otherwise, anything in Brookfield is a good bet.  There's a few smaller inn like hotels in Mequon.  Those are straight shot to downtown and definitely safe.

Again, unless there's a lot of traffic, almost all the suburbs are about 15 minutes away from downtown.  Nothing is too terribly far away in Mke.

Stay away from too far south on S 27th street.
Some of the small chains by the airport are a little sleazy.

You can check out traveler reviews on tripadvisor as well.  A quick check on expedia showed lots of possibilities in Brookfield/Wauwatosa/airport area.
I will see you at the game.

For a nice new hotel in Wauwatosa, try the Crowne Plaza.  It is near HWY 45 on the corner of Watertown Plank Road and Mayfair Road.  About 10-15 minutes from downtown.  http://www.crowneplazamilwaukee.com/

Looks like the local Starwood properties are available for this weekend (aLoft downtown, Sheraton Brookfield, Four Points up north). NOt sure what age your kids are but the aLoft is not for younger kids. Also I personally wouldn't go back there. There is virtually no door on the bathroom, it's noisy and I think just kind of cheesy...trying to be a boutique hotel but with really cheap looking materials. The Sheraton in Brookfield is nice for families - close to a mall for other things to do/food options and it has a pool.

No matter what you do, do NOT go witin 50 yards of the Ramada Inn at 6th and MIchigan.

check out in brookfield. Also there is a hotel in waukesha (right on 94; about 20 minutes from downtown) that has a water park. Country springs in waukesha.

Good luck.

Hands down the best value in downtown Milwaukee, and a very easy walk to the Bradley Center.

I would also highly recommend the Brookfield area. The hotel right across from Champs is very nice. I believe it is on Moorland Rd.. If that one is still available, I would suggest going with that one. Also a very easy ride to the Bradley Center. Freeway is right next to the hotel

As long as you're staying in Brookfield, you should make an attempt to grab a burger or some frozen Custard at Kopp's.

www.kopps.com

Looks like a good selection of custard flavors for the first and second round as well.

Seriously?????
After all of the fantastic selections offered, you chose an old, rundown Sheraton miles from downtown???
I hope Pitt advances because the hotel isn't going to be the highlight of your trip.  ?-(

If you're traveling with family, that makes a big difference. The Sheraton in Brookfield is nice, recently remodeled and Brookfield is not that far from the city. Don't scare the guy!

Yeah, I gotta agree with this.  If you are going to Milwaukee, why stay in Brookfield?  I mean, it's nice if you like malls and chain restaurants, but I'd rather be downtown.  The downtown Courtyard is a real nice, new place...with a shuttle bus to the casino if you are into that sort of thing.

And who can forget that the Sheraton was a scene of a mass shooting a couple of years ago.

Kinda misleading. It happened 3 or 4 yrs ago during a church service that met in their ballroom. Some guy lost it, and I don't think any visitors were hurt.

Tragic certainly, but very isolated.

Thanks, that does add context to it. Definitely tragic, as you said.
