Title: Gottlieb just said...
Post by: ATWizJr on March 15, 2010, 08:11:11 AM
on ESPN, that although 75% of the nation was picking MU he was going with the Huskies.  Rationale:  although the PAC 10 stunk all year, that doesn't mean that the teams at the top stunk.  Would WA have gotten in without winning the PAC 10 tourney?

That's whats crazy with all these analysts, and unforunately me too, they all get fixated on one performance and forget many of these teams' total body of work.  UW was a team squarely on the bubble 3 days ago and in most circles were on their way to the NIT until they beat a terrible Cal team in the PAC-10 final now all of a sudden they're a "sleeper".  Come on, while I think they're talented I don't think they'll be running to the Sweet 16 anytime soon.  There's a reason they almost didn't get an invite to the dance.

Another one is Cornell.  It was mentioned on ESPN but I forget who said it.  Cornell lost to Penn, the last place team in the Ivy league but because they "almost" beat Kansas everyone thinks they'll steam roll Temple.  I think Temple crushes Cornell but again, who knows.

I'm not a Gottlieb hater in the traditional sense (i.e. he's generally a Marquette hater), it just that everything that he says is mostly complete nonsense.  I think the ESPN guys really get a bad rap for the most part because they are forced to form opinions with very little analsis or time to actually think about anything before they say it.  Stick to the print reporters (e.g. SI, Sporting News, etc.) if you want a more informed opinion.

Also, did Doug inherit Michael Irving's wardrobe when he got fired???

Doug Gottleib had his mother in the "First four out" of his Life Tournament.

Outisde Of Ville we have not blown out a team since Dec probably.  We have the height of a High school team and we are only average athleticly.  Every team that is a 13 seed or higher would have a great shot at us if we don't shoot 50% + from 3's and do not have single digits in turnover's.  I think UW has a great shot at beating us.  I off course hope we shoot 50% from 3's and have 5 turnover's but you are not gonig to do that every game.

Reading all of this board today makes me wonder if we should even show up.  How could such a lowly team like the 6th seeded Warriors stand any chance against the mighty, mighty, 11th seeded UW?  I'm sure that it will be a great game (all that we've played have been great games sans G-town), but when did Debbie Downer get the passwords for 90% of the people on this board?

There is no problem with confidence, but cockyness it what many of us are trying to avoid. After reading UW posts they are confident and half of their topics right now are ripping into several posters for apparently posting on this board that they are going to beat us no problem. No single person represents an entire fan base, but generalizations can be made from one individual.

Oh, and Doug Gottlieb has a husky.

Actually Gottlieb trained his dog to kick his mother.  That's why she's in the last four out in the life tourney...

The truth of the matter is that this is a game where the two teams matchup almost identically to one another.  This means that any outcome is realistically possible.  Experts are always looking for some kind of upset, and lets be honest with ourselves, from an outsiders perspective this is definitly an attractive game to pick for an upset.  However, those of us that have watched Marquette play the entire year feel great about this game, since for the first time all year we will have a size advantage, something that no one thought was possible.  We will actually have the tallest person on the court, which sounds quite odd.  If we shoot cold, we could lose to anyone, but you have to feel good playing a team that is our size, that, quite frankly, just isn't as good as us.  In 1965, Doug Gottlieb picked Cuba as his upset special over America in the Bay of Pigs Tournament.

In addition to his Warrior dislike, I can't be the only one to think he is the most arrogant prick among all the analysts out there.  His smugness and attitude if another analyst doesn't agree with Sir Gottlieb's analysis has no rival.

This is an old article, but it just shows that he hates all of the big east.  Not just MU.  Gottleib is a tool.  Always has been, always will be.  Some people just like to make statements to get a reaction.  That is the only reason Gottlieb is on TV, because he gets a reaction.

How do you figure you will have the tallest guy on the floor??? Our starting center Matthew Bryan Ammaning goes 6-9, I know you have a 6-10 & a 7 footer but they don't play do they?  Other than center we match up pretty close, I'm sure we will try to pound the ball into the paint in the 1/2 court and get out fast in transition by crashing the boards, we rebound very aggressively. However if you guys hit the 3 as well as I've heard we will have problems with you. I think it's  a great match up and Gottlieb's a tool.

Husky fans, I have a question that may dictate outcome.  Can MBA guard the perimeter?   Can he guard a quick 3 playing out of position who can shoot the 3?    Can he guard a 3 who can get to the rack from the 3 pt line with either hand?   If the answer is yes, your odds just improved mightily.   If it is no.........

That is good...44% as a free throw shooter, never more than 50%as a starting point guard.  I found it at the 1:06 mark.

Well, not many true centers do all those things well, so this definitely presents a matchup problem for us. If you're talking of Hayward I don't think we will have MBA guarding him, he will probably see Holiday and Gant but that still leaves us with MBA on a smaller quicker, strong shooting Eagle. Definitely a problem on the defensive end but a bonus for us on the offensive end and on the boards IMO. MBA can move pretty well but I don't see him staying with Hayward, this is why our coach gets the big bucks, we''ll see what he comes up with.

Now that's funny.  What Angelo's did have going for it was its ability to deliver anywhere on campus.  They delivered to the Varsity projection booth for me more than once.

Darnell is our big that defends the perimeter. We've used him to guard PG's and C's. He's 6'8 and long and started almost all the games as a freshman, but has been coming off the bench as a Sophomore.

          3 pt %
Acker  48%
Cubillan 39%
DJO  47%
Butler 50%
Hayward  35%

You right though, dude gets paid to figure out the match up problems
