Title: Lazar in Draft
Post by: MJH7 on March 11, 2010, 04:40:22 PM
Will Lazar be a mid first round draft pick? His stock is surely rising these past few games.

Gottlieb may not think there's any NBA players on this team, but Hayward will make someone's roster and I can see DJO being a 1st round pick. SO that's two IMO and one sure fire in DJO. Butler has a shot too.

Probably late or mid first round. I hope he could come back and play on the Bucks or on the Jazz with Wes. I dont think Gottlieb has any idea what he is talking about.

There is no way Lazar goes in the first round.  I love Lazar as much as the next person, but he will end up being drafted in the second round at best.

It would be great to have someone from MU to play for the Bucks someday especially since they are starting to get things together. Basketball in Milwaukee is on the up.

I'd never want to defend Gottleib, BUT the context of his comment about not being sure we had any future NBA players was him heaping praise on MU for being the hardest working team around.  While I hope he was wrong, it wasn't like last year when he was ragging on us, and even at the end of last year his summary of the season threw out that noone will ever know how far we could have gone if DJ hadn't gone down.

As for Lazar, I know there are concerns among scouts he is a "tweener." but I hope they noted he can hit effortlessly in the final minutes of the game from behind the NBA arc.  He was going down the ramp before the Pitt game and was several feet behind where I was sitting, probably 25 feet OFF THE COURT on the ramp going down, and he took a ball and with the flip of a wrist put a perfect arc off the back of the rim.

DRAFT HIM!

Has him going 38th to the Wizards, which is up from 44 (LA Lakers) And I was just about ready to become a Laker's fan

I love Lazar too, but I don't see him getting drafted.  I don't think he has the lateral quickness to be a 2-3 in the NBA and I don't think he can play the post in the NBA.

I'm most optimistic about DJO making the league, but he's a bit too short to play the 2 in the NBA, but he's such a great shooter.  Who knows.

Have to agree.  He has the intangibles, but I am not sure he can play the 2.  If he opens up his game a la Wesley Matthews he would be outstanding.  Not sure he has the quickness or ball handling ability.  Probably to small to play the post.  Fortunately for him he has shown how versatile he is.  That is a definite positive.

Lazar will earn his second round draft pick at the camps, his college career will get him invited, but that's it.

I can't see him NOT being drafted. Not only is he a very versatile player but he can also handle the pressure. I am sure that he would be a good fit for some team. He's also a very smart player.

I just like that they have him ahead of Gody!

I recall experts saying that Wesley Matthews didn't quite 'fit' the profile of a 2 in the NBA, and he's faring well.  My hope is that Wes's success bodes well for Lazar.  If nothing else, NBA GM's should take notice that Marquette players bring it very time they step on the court.

Thank God!  I thought this thread was about Zar standing in the cold.  We cannot afford to lose him to a cold at this juncture.

Hey, he doesn't get drafted.  That's a lock.  NBA teams' draft personnel suffer from true "group think".  He'll be excluded solely on height since he didn't play guard.  He'll be waiting around while teams draft players with "potential" who fart in their coaches face and heave shots from half court when they get mad during games.

He would be better off being a free agent than a 2d rounder...find a good fit.   Hope he has a good agent.  Great kid who will be making money playing ball for someone next year.  Maybe we should all chip in and purchase a european team.  We would only sign Marquette players.  Only hire former MU coaches (Mike Deane anyone?).  Just think of DJO coming off a Kinsella screen to catch a pass from Niv Berkowitz.  Team name?  Well, political correctness not required for this team.

I definitely think that he still gets into a camp and maaaybe sneaks into the late second round.

But cmon, first round guys?
He's old. He doesn't have a position. Those are the big first two.

Also, the things he does that make us love him so much aren't things scouts tell their teams to use picks on. Yes hes clutch, yes he does all the little things you would want a player to do, yes he's smart and a great leader. But if he's never going to be a go to guy on an NBA team, those things matter a lot less all of a sudden. He'll never have the ball in crunch time, he'll never be leading a team. I could never ask for more out of a senior than what Lazar has been for us this year. However those just aren't things that translate to the next level - or at the very least, aren't things that get a guy drafted.

Lazar would be perfect in the Triangle. Go Lakers get him

I gotta agree with you, but only because you used "should" and not "will" when talking about NBA GM's.

Definitely!!!  And now's the time to do it.  Siena just gave Mike his walking papers!  My life will not be complete until I've had a cloudy Belgian Ale in a small pub with Deane in some medium sized Belgian city.
