Title: [JohnnyJungle.com] Calm Before the Storm: Second Time Means Revenge
Post by: Dave Krupinski on March 10, 2010, 12:02:57 AM
The Red Storm uncharacteristically jumped out to a nice cushion early... and took advantage of atrocious shooting (31% in the first half) and 8 turnovers to build a 53-22 cushion... and then repeated the feat in the second half, holding the desperate Huskies to 29 and scoring 38. It was a strange game for longtime St. John's fans – the team was aggressive, active, and looked to dunk on the Huskies.

I bring all that up because the box score looks like it was brought from the other side of the looking glass. Contributions up and down the roster, aggressive and smart play, patience when necessary, smart passing... the fans hope they see a repeat of that performance in the next game, a 2:00 PM matchup against the Marquette Golden Eagles. It was spectacular, and the team should come out fired up, considering how badly the Eagles beat the Johnnies last year.  You might remember Chris Mullin in the stands, or the complete lack of execution, as Buzz Williams had the team well figured out.

Will tomorrow repeat the failures of the past? Or will the Red Storm get revenge? The OT loss against the Golden Eagles was very close, and if the team was playing with the kind of pep in their step that they had against Connecticut, they just might have dunked that breakaway that would have been the difference in the regular period.

You're still fired up about that one huh?  Acrobatic dunks aren't 100% shots either.  Just sayin'.  They were going too fast and f'ed up the shot. Probably would have bounced a dunk off the rim.

I'm not the author of the article.

However that blown opportunity was garbage. There wasn't anyone within 20ft from you and you're 6'8 dunk it and make sure it goes in 100%. No reason to go George Gervin like that jumping from the FT line.

No offense to you Johnny, but it's plays like that that make St.Johns St.Johns.  They've been near bottom feeders in the Big East for years now and tend to find ways to snap defeat from the jaws of victory.  That tends to happen to teams that haven't had a recent history of winning.

That being said, I think your team is much improved this season and I think that the Johnnies have a very good shot at beating MU today.  I think it's essentially a coin toss.  Will St.Johns carry over yesterday's energy into today's game, or might they have spent it all beating UConn?  We shall see.....~4 hour countdown to tipoff!

Haha you're telling me like I don't know this. St. John's has been bad new bear-esque for far too long. They do have talent on this team this year. They really do. They have better athletes than Marquette but Marquette is better schooled. I hope its a good game today.

I like the article, it's good to have the perspective from the other side.
I'll be honest, St Johns scares me.

I keep kicking myself because I'm trying not too look ahead, but I want Villanova again.

+1

We were very close last time we played and from the looks of yesterdays game, they are playing a lot better then they did the last time we played them.

Nothing taken away from St Johns, because they played very well. But remember, this is the same UCONN team that was down 20 to USF a few days ago
