Title: Our Resume Right Now
Post by: Tom Crean's Tanning Bed on March 08, 2010, 12:09:21 PM

Their numbers on the vs. top 50 & top 100 are a little out of date from the RPI calculation (today's RPI).

Overall: 20-10
Conference:  11-7
RPI: 56
SOS: 49
vs. Top 50: 3-6 (wins vs. Xavier (Neutral), Louisville, Georgetown)
vs. Top 100: 8-8 (5-2 vs. 51-100; wins @UConn, @Cincinnati, @ Seton Hall, @St. John's, USF)
Sub-100 losses: 2 (NC State, @Depaul)
Road/Neutral Record: 7-6

I have heard all of the lock talk, but it has been such a crazy year in NCAA men's b-ball that I won't be relaxed until I hear Marquette's selection.  If we lose to UConn in the second round of the BE tournament, I'll need to take a whole bottle of Rolaids.  A wonderful year from what was discussed preseason, but I'm way to greedy to take anything less than a win in the NCAA tournament at this point.

If they lose their first game in the BET, they are out as I see it.  DePaul and NC State are bad losses of epic proportion.  I know that everyone believes, as they should, that the 5th place team in the Big East will get a pick but I think that, in the mind of the selection group, Marquette could actually be thought of as 8th behind Louisville, Georgetown, and Notre Dame.  I hope I'm wrong, but I am pessimistic by nature and every year someone gets it royally.

I actually am on the lookout for UNC getting to the semi's of the ACC tournament which will probably land them in the tourney with a ridiculous seed, watch for it.  There has never been a national champion who did not make the tournament the following year, and to have it happen to North Carolina?

Florida.  2 years ago.

Umm, Marquette beat both Louisville and Georgetown, so my guess is they are fairly safe if their bid is lined up against those two teams.

They are in and it's a lock.  If we lose to UCONN or St. John's, then we'll probably end up a 10th or 11th seed.  There is no way an 11-7 Big East team is going to be left out.  Yes, the DePaul loss is brutal beyond comprehension but it is what it is.  Too many other wins to make up for it.

The 2nd half of your post is slightly more absurd than the first half... There is NO way UNC gets in the NCAA tournament without an automatic bid, so they would have to win the ACC tourney, and thats not gonna happen.

The fact that UConn and Illinois are even being talked about as tourny teams makes us a lock.

Yes, we have two bad losses (one awful one and one bordering on bad depending on what happens in the ACC tournament).  But I still want to see the argument of what teams should be in ahead of Marquette.

Illinois went ice cold down the stretch and lost 5 of 6.  Florida has only 1 win vs. the RPI top 50 I believe. Minnesota went .500 in the Big 10.  Dayton went 8-8 in the A-10 and got swept by SLU. Rhode Island has 3 sub 150 RPI losses, 2 of which have come in their last 3 games.  Memphis hasn't even beat anyone in the RPI top 50.

The bubble is absolute sucktacular this year.  However, I still think we are very much on the right side of it.

Completely agree with you on this. Also, I believe you deserve an apology for all the slack you got on the "soft bubble" comments. It seems pretty obvious now that it is a pretty weak field and that maybe in other years Marquette's 'fair' computer numbers and RPI would have us sweating much, much more.

This season, with other bubble teams bringing even less to the table than MU's resume, to go along with finishing 11-7 and 5th in a conference that will likely get 8 teams, MU is a lock...

We are in.  It is not even a question.  11-7 in the big east gets you in any year.

Plus, there have been no upsets of "lock" teams in the conference tournaments so far.  To keep that up, Butler needs to beat Wright State, Gonzaga needs to beat St. Mary's, and possibly Sienna needs to beat Fairfield.

R.I.D.I.C.U.L.O.U.S.  UNC needs to win the ACC Championship, period.  We could lose Wednesday and probably still not even fall to a double digit seed.

MUhoops85, breathe. Clearly, you're getting hysterical which has lead to irrational statements. UNC, really? That ship sailed in early February.

It would take an unprecedented and unrealistic number of tournament upsets for MU not to get in. Nothing has changed sine 1PM Saturday...there is a 0% chance MU will not be in the tournament.

If a 5-11 UNC makes the tournament over a 11-7 Marquette I might quit watching NCAA basketball for good.  Nothing short of an ACC tournament championship will get UNC in this year.

The real issue is how many bids the Big East gets. If MU losses in the first game and Notre Dame, Georgetown and Louisville wins their first game, we will only get a bid if they take at least 8 Big East teams. If we lose our first game we ned to hope that at least one of the other three lose their first game also.

There's no reason to think the BE can't and won't get at least 8 bids, there's nothing stopping anybody from taking that many teams from one particular conference.  Look at the Big 12, it looks like they have 7 lock teams, more than 50%.  Not a problem for the BE to get 8 even 9 if some of the teams below 8th place make a run in the tournament.

I swear i read that no cbampion has ever failed to make the tournamet.   I stand  corrected.   Has 50% of the final four from the previous year ever failed to make it?

2008.  Florida and Ohio State both missed the tournament.

I'm confused, wouldn't the big 12 getting so many team in hurt our chances of getting 8?

Not that it matters you are all forgetting to count the 1/3 of a win we get for moral victories. Lock.

The OP made it sound like no way can a team get half of their teams in and that's just not the case.

As for the overall number, the Pac 10 down leaves plenty of bids for the other major conferences to claim.  The Big 10 could end up only getting four out of 11.

Call it what you like. A couple years ago the buzzword was parity, now it's a "soft bubble(tm)(chicos)".  Whatever, good teams make it to the tournament, bad teams don't.  A lot of teams are more competitive than they used to be.
