Title: The Jumping Fool
Post by: rawhidechewbone on March 03, 2010, 02:16:19 PM
ESPN footage of the MU - UL game has a shot of the student section with everyone decked out in baby blue t-shirts and jumping in place. In the middle of the pack is a middle-aged guy jumping with the students. I have seen this guy on MU game telecasts on DirecTv Full Court through out this season jumping like a fool. He is usually in a suit. Also, his very embarassed wife is usually in the shot.

Anyone know who this guy is? He always has shyte eating grin on his face as he jumps up and down in place. Bizarre behavior at the very least.

R A Smith
He is a big time fan of MU hoops.  I believe he's an engineering alum and owner  an engineering company with several offices statewide.
If the warriors lose, he flies his warrior flag at half-staff.  I'm sure if you drive by Smith Centre today, you will see the warrior flag flying proudly at full-staff.

His name is Richard Smith. Hes the president of R.A. Smith and Associates, Inc. in Brookfield. Got his undergrad at MU in engineering and grad degree from MU also.

My senior engineering project was for RA Smith several years ago and I remember seeing him in the halls of their office in Brookfield and our group just started laughing because we all knew who he was. Jump around guy in his natural habitat.

I think the guy is awesome.  He's a big MU fan, a big MU supporter and everytime he's on TV both me and my wife can't help but smile.

I'm sure he's well aware of his lack of rhythm or he may even do it on purpose to be funny.

Either way, keep rocking, my friend!

He is also at a ton of Bucks games. I've seen him at a couple MU-Bucks double headers. I'm a huge fan of both but two bball games is a lot.

+1. I agree wholeheartedly. Noting embarrassing about it, just a guy who loves his team having a good time. More people should take note of this, chill out, and enjoy MU Bball. What a great year, I've got nothing to complain about, and if I had to pick something to nitpick, this would not be it.

Not only was this a dumb thread, but Rawhidechewbone just posted the following quote that he stole from LenElmoresTurtle on the other board.  The subject of his post was "Pitino", however the mods just deleted it before I called him out.

Here is rawhidechewbone's quote:
"Any word on Pitino's whereabouts tonight? One report says he is heading to Porcini for a meal of hot steaming clam linguini."

Here is the quote from LenElmoresTurtle:
"Let's get our asses back to Louisville, boys. I've got a steaming hot clam linguini waiting for me at Porcini that I can't wait to sink my tongue into!"

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   ;D

Rick Smith adds local character to a canned cheer that everyone else does -- that makes it great.

I was at the game last night and the jump around timeout seemed to go longer than usual and the camera kept finding RAS.  He was getting pretty worn out after several minutes of jumping.

You want bizarre behavior?  How about the bizarre way that UL - a team on the bubble making an end-of-season push - decided that they didn't want to play last night.  That's much more bizarre than any alum, no matter if he's from Marquette or Kennesaw State, having a little fun.

Did you pick Kennesaw State at random or because they just dumped Lipscomb out of the A-Sun tournament?

I think this maybe have been alluded to earlier, but the students (at least my son and his friends) refer to him as Jump Around Guy.  Even my high school son, who's attended several games this year, came into the room last night when he heard the song on the ESPNU broadcast and said, it's time for Jump Around Guy!

Good times!

Big fan of MU hoops and his behavior is just fine if you ask me.  He likes to Jump Around.

From this link ....

Smith, a 1973 MU graduate and native of Milwaukee, has been doing his routine for over three years, and it's become a staple of the gameday experience at the Bradley Center.

It began as a dare from his wife, Joan, in 2006 at an ESPN televised game. Sitting in section 227, Smith noticed a conspicuous lack of anyone besides the students jumping to the song.

"I was wearing a suit and thinking `why is it just the students jumping?'" said Smith. "`Why doesn't anyone else get up with some enthusiasm?' My wife asked, `Well, what's holding you back?' So I get up and start jumping, and as soon as I do the camera focused on me. Almost immediately she gets a phone call."

Turns out it was their son Bobby, a Georgetown graduate living in Washington D.C. who was watching the game on television.

"Mom, is that my idiot father I just saw jumping up and down on ESPN?"

Later that evening Smith was featured on various local television news programs that labeled him a lookalike to the movie character Ron Burgundy, the eccentric news anchor played by actor Will Ferrell in the comedy Anchorman.

R.A. Smith had arrived.

----

As my handle says, I graduated 26 years ago so I'm of the age that I'm also an "idiot father."  ... I laughed so hard when I read this I almost peed my pants.

Its funny that the Freeway comparisons are made, cause their effect on the crowd is similar.  The only other person to add such an immediate shot of electricity is the reluctant kissing old couple.

I met RA Smith at the Big east Tourney a few years back and he was all over the arena; in with the band, courtside, in the rafters. I like his energy, but last night as I watched him I felt he was going to have a heart attack. Didn't look like his usual spry self, almost like he was ready to hurl.

Well I will stop dancing around the elephant in the room. You guys (the negative ones) are douches for making fun of someone that is clearly not at full mental capacity. I'm pretty sure how he looks or acts in your eyes is of no bearing to him.

There is a "kid" (he is 35) at my high school who essentially does the same thing. He hovers around the sports scense like a mix between Freeway and Radio. No one makes fun of because of him because he hasn't perfected all the subtle social cues most people come to expect. Get over it.
