Title: Top Rivals
Post by: HoopsMalone on March 01, 2010, 10:20:37 AM
This week is really awesome.  How often do we get to play two longtime rivals in the last week of the season with everyone on the bubble?

Louisville/MU has given us some great entertainment this decade.  Some of the better finishes.  This site gives MU/Louisville the #22 best college bball rivalry of all time-  http://www.prepticket.com/album/823292:Album:83172/school/university--of--south--carolina--columbia/id/823292:Photo:83155
(MU/Wisco #20) (also, Louisville/Kentucky is #2 for them)

ND is the Catholic school rivalry in the Midwest.  We have to tip our hats to ND as the better academic school, and there is always something underlying it when we play ND since some people at MU wish they could go to ND, particularly our Irish Catholic friends from the South Side of Chicago.  I wasn't around for it, but back when ND and MU were independent, it was supposedly a great rivalry.  Their fans do not reciprocate the passion we have for college bball or this game (football school), but a big one nonetheless.  I hope they win all of their games and come in to the BC for an elimination game.

What a great week.  I love March!

I have never, nor shall I ever tip my hat to ANYONE from Notre Dame.

And I definitely never wanted to go there.  Great academics.  Static community.

Absolutely not. The ND fans--many who did not go there think they are way better than any other fans/teams. Put another way, they think their crap doesn't stink.

Grew up in Chicago and I've never cheered for ND...I've always cheered for who ever they are playing against no matter what the sport is.

If you've never been to the Notre dame campus before, let me inform you, south bend Indiana is maybe the bleakest place on earth.

I'm a Marquette Warrior.   I hate all things Notre Dame.  Period.

The best part of going to a Marquette game at Notre Dame is seeing the looks of their fan's as they are  appalled you would cheer for a team other than Notre Dame.

Why do we have to tip our hat......what do you base the "better academic school" on?   They are smaller.   They can be more fickle.  I did not apply to ND.  I despised those Chicago snobs who came to Marquette with a chip on their shoulder because they weren't accepted at ND.  Stay on the South Side and bi**h about your sorry life.

The football atmosphere is kinda fun, but there is no better way to get my "I hate ND" juices flowing than to go to the Joyce Center and listen to that fight song all night long.

I applied and was accepted.   Visited the campus when there wasn't a football game.    Bleak surroundings, air of smug superiority from the students and the administrators I met with.    Pass.

As a southsider, I have some experience with the Notre Dame phenomenon. People grow up with either an irrational, all-consuming love of all things Notre Dame (the majority) or they despise Notre Dame (the minority, and where I existed). In terms of ND, I could not think of a more boring place to spend my college years.

I am from the South Side of Chicago, both my parents are from Ireland, and I have always hated ND and so have my parents. From what I've seen the majority of people that root for ND on the South Side aren't Irish, IMO.

Regardless, lets kill the evil Pitino and kill Harangody's Irish in his LAST college basketball game ever.

I went to a soccer camp there, and there campus is not that great. The woman are...worse than MU, and its in Indiana.

Let's be fair here, Luke might get to play in the NIT  ;D

Man, I thought I was posting something positive.  I was just communicating how excited I was about playing two rivals in one week during March.

I was not trying to insult anyone about ND, so sorry if I pushed some buttons.  I guess the quick reaction proves that there is something to this MU/ND game beyond the bubble team scenario.

There are plenty of people who choose MU over ND as well, I just know that the opposite is true at MU for more than any other school that kids apply to.  It doesn't make MU bad at all and almost everyone loves Marquette once they get there.  Almost everyone would rather hang out with an MU alum than an ND alum too.

The ND sentiments are already fuming...  I'd love to burst their bubble.

It's no insult to MU, but it is harder to get into ND.  It's not like Madison where the schools are objectively parallel and admissions standards are within a few points.  It's no hit to my pride to admit that.  Going to Marquette is a great choice for building character and preparing you for a successful career.

I don't mind ND alums as much as others.  I respect their passion for their school and sports and have not been treated condescendingly.  I think that the people who went to ND in the 70s and 80s might be like that, but I don't think they are as bad now.

I do not like Harangody's whining or their coaches' slicked back hair.  I cannot wait to pound them.

I have several close friends who go to Notre Dame...they are ALL douche bags when it comes to ND sports.  Their teams are always wayy over rated.  I think we will beat them by at least 15 when we play them.

Man, how nice would that be?  This team seems allergic to leads at times....

Their engineering school was never anything special.

"Notre who?"  is my all time favorite T-shirt!!!!!

"Digger eats quiche!"   is my all time favorite banner at a game.  ;D
