Title: How good do you think vander will be?
Post by: mikem91288 on February 27, 2010, 12:09:59 PM
I hear some talk that if Vander Blue Starts right away, some think he could be one and done if we have a good year. Is this crazy?  Or is it actually a possibility?

vander can dunk like jordan in space jams so be ready...

but I don't know about a 1 and done though...

I highly doubt he will be 1 and done

Possible, though I wouldn't predict it.

Although I don't think he will, if Vander puts together a season similar to the one Dominic James had his freshman year, he could easily go into the draft. 'Nic would've been a lottery pick that year. A certain bust, but a lottery pick nonetheless. The NBA draft is all about potential, so if Vander has a year similar to the one DJ had a few years back, it wouldn't be out of the question.

Hate these speculative questions, but they're fun for forums!

If he's billed as he is and producing and continually improving, I say he's a 3 year candidate.

If MU tastes the NCAA from his frosh/soph years AND ON, he might stay his 4 years for a deeper run.

A lot depends on how quickly he learns to play defense at Div I level.  right now he is playing on the back of a 1-3-1 zone (whioch is rdiculous).

Vander is not a 1 and done talent and DJ would not have been a lottery pick after his freshman season.

Dj would have probably been a 1st rounder but to have your memory clouded by time and say he would have been a lottery pick is crazy

I think Vander will be a nice, solid player his freshman year.. maybe 9 pts 2ast 2 reb per game.  I highly doubt he goes straight to the NBA.  As for DJames he probably would have been picked somewhere between 20-30 in the first round if he came out.  Definatley not a lottery pick.

Yes you guys are right...I retract my previous statement. All I'm trying to say is that if Vander has a similar year, he could have a legit shot at getting drafted, which obviously means he could decide to leave.

Where did this retroactive glee about DJ's freshman year come from?

When was the last player from Wisconsin to be a one-and-done? He'll be in a whole different world playing in the Big East next year.

Jimmy and DJO will be a too big a part of the offense for Vander to put up the numbers to go to the NBA.  Im happy that Vander will likely be around for 3 or 4 years.

How many players who have a legitimate shot at being a lottery pick actually stay "for a deeper run"? Wade didn't do it and Hansborough wasn't really deemed a lottery pick. I really can't think of anyone who stayed for a deeper run. Well, the FL team came back, but they were coming off a championship already. They stayed for a repeat and dynasty.

Sites had him as high as the lottery. He would have fallen after measurements and camps, but he definitely could've been a one and done player. It would be a personal choice, but he may have been better off leaving. If was selected in the first round he was a guaranteed millionaire and NBA lifestyle for 3 years. I think he would've been bordlerline 1st/2nd, although McNeal was suppose to go there too.

ANY college basketball player (with very, very few exceptions) who has a strong chance to go in the first round owes it to himself to leave early and get a guaranteed contract. You can only play basketball at a high level for so many years. This is typically in the years of 19/20 to the mid-30s for a basketball player. At best you are looking at a 15 year career, but more likely ten or less. If you have a chance to make millions of dollars during any one of those years you have to take it. To argue otherwise is ridiculous. I loved college and the college basketball experience is a good one, but when it comes to your career and your livelihood you have an obligation to do what is best for YOU. I would hope if given Vander Blue would do the same and I would never, ever fault him for it.

I don't think Vander Blue will start until his Soph year-----Buycks will start ahead of him next year. Look for DW to be vastly improved next year. Ultimately Blue shouldl be a very good player at MU.

He had a great game in a win against Madison East last Thursday... 21 and 12 in front of Buzz.  Most came in the second half.  Apparently their were like 6 D1 recruits on the floor.   Amazing hoops out of Madtown these days.

Those sites were out of their minds.  There's no market in the NBA for an undersized PG who can't shoot.

The fact that DJ didn't declare (or stay through the whole process, whatever that's called) makes me believe he wouldn't have gone that high. If there was good feedback, he would be insane not to take the pay day.

I don't think I necessarily agree with...

He was averaging 15 points per game and showed incredible potential. It might have been all due to Novak's ability to spread the floor, but he was genuinely exciting his freshman year. His offense was never the same, but at the time, he looked like a superstar in the making, IMHO.

Back to the topic at hand...

I prefer to think small and be surprised. I think VB will be good, but probably not a starter, and not take-over-a-game-john-wall good. I'd love to be wrong, but high school ball isn't anything like D1, and I fully expect it to take some time to get up to speed.

Vander will be the next great Warrior guard in a very long line of past great guards at our school.

Have to agree with Murf-ster on this one.  Barring injury, Buycks will be our most improved player next year.  With him and DJO, I don't know how Vander gets enough minutes.  I think Vander only averages 20 min. a game next year.

throw in buzz's six- seven man rotations (that we all HOPE will change) and his beliefe in kids having to learn to play div 1 and big east basketball 20 minutes might be the end of the year total.  He might start out with way less.

Buzz's players seem to have a big learning curve (JFB last season).  I also think that Acker and Cubillan might have been starting this year no matter what.  Junior's injury just gave them more pt throughout the year.

It seems the guy likes his upperclassmen leaders.

If VB displays 1 and done talent next year, I imagine we would at least be an Elite 8 team.

Shooting 43/30/64.  There was no chance he was getting drafted.

Probably would have done just fine in the 6 foot and under league. In fact, you could argue Acker has a better chance of being drafted this year than James. And, Acker has none.

Buycks will beat out Blue next year although Blue will be the immediate backups for Buycks & DJO.

Look for significant improvement for DW next year----he's already showing signs of improvement on both ends of the court. Don't overlook the value of experience.

Buycks over Vander, come on now. The starting job is Vander's to lose at this pooint. Also, don't discount Junior Cadougan depending on the summer he has.

Vander is at least a dollar/dozen guard. He starts in the backcourt by the beginning of the BE season.

I think we go with a lineup of JB, Otule, DJO, Vander and Buycks.
