I didn't want to post this for it's partisan political nature, but I got an email from my state Rep today informing me of various legislation and I took some interest in one that put the state closer to banning ethnic mascots.
I'm not really in favor of this (besides the fact that MU surrendered the Warriors moniker a few years ago). My High school is one of the Indian based high schools plus I'm not one for being overly politically correct. Furthermore there are schools in Wisconsin that use non-Native American based nicknames that may be offensive or stereotypical of an ethnicity... Spartans, Vikings etc.
I also think that Native American tribes have bigger problems than high schools with Indian based logos.

Interesting story about mascots. My high school is the Rebels and while they kept the name, they got rid of the mascot because it had ties to the confederacy. Last I knew they didn't even have a mascot, just the Rebel name. I hope they never use that Akbar character another thread was talking about.

No worries...doubtful your high school has a few million to give George Lucas.

How is this partisan? Its common sense. This should have been done a long time ago.
You can dismiss it as PC, but that doesn't mean its not the right thing to do. With Indian mascots, you are raising children in an atmosphere of stereotype and generalizations. I guess a professional team can do whatever they want, but for school supported by taxpayer dollars, its inexcusable to be funding offensive nicknames.
The only way it should be allowed is if you have the consent of a local tribe (like the Florida State Seminoles), as in the NCAA.
EDIT: I do still think, as in the case of Warriors, a school like MU should have been able to keep the name and change the imagery (Golden State Warriors, for example).
