Post by: Big Papi on February 16, 2007, 10:54:50 AM

The University of Illinois is finally caving in to the pressure and retiring Chief Illiniwek.

Here is the link to the story on the Chicago Tribune.  You might need to register to read.

Maybe they'll change their nickname to the Mountain Lions or something having absolutely no historical ties to the university.

When I was down there two years ago on work and visiting a friend they had a big meeting about this that I attended as I was interested given the Marquette situation of past years.  The talk during that meeting of the board of trustees was that if they changed it would be to Prairie Fire....a local flower.

Now the article specifically says they will keep the name Fightin' Illini since it is short for Illinois all the have to do is eliminate the Native American imagery.  Hmmmmmm, I wonder if that might have worked in our situation ;)

U of I basketball has had a pretty rough year.

-McBride gets arrested.
-They lose Gordon's verbal commit to Indiana.
-The car accident last week.
-No more Chief.

They're on the bubble too.

Minus the car accident (I would not wish this on anyone), I'm glad the high and mighty Illini have fallen on tough times. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch. They think they're God's gift to NCAA basketball for some reason. The only person I feel sorry for is Bruce Weber, who is genuinely a very nice guy and a good basketball coach. Other than that, screw 'em.
