Title: Hayward's lone weakness
Post by: NavinRJohnson on February 24, 2010, 07:27:11 PM
Stupid fouls. It seems as though every game he is good for at least on unnecessary reach in foul 30, 40, sometime 80 feet from the basket. They seem innocuous enough at the time, but often the result is extended minutes on the bench with foul trouble.

Agreed, though his second foul tonight looked like a clean strip to me.  His 'stupid' fouls generally come when he's trying to make up for a turnover, missed board, missed shot, etc.

I thought his first was foolish, his second a poor call / clean strip.

I do wish he would pass out of the low post a bit more, though.

I agree with the captain... hard to say he only has 1 weakness.  Great player, don't get me wrong, but stupid fouls is one of his few problems.

Don't want to knock Lazar, who has, after all, been a very good player for us for four years.  But to me his biggest deficiency is his interior offense.  He has a rep as a great inside outside player, but he is practically helpless on the low blocks with the ball when the other team has a 6-7 player or taller who is not a complete stiff.  He's got to be near the top of the nation in getting his shot blocked.  He excels at the hustle plays, getting the big rebound.  He seems to be a great leader.  I'm glad he plays for us.  He gets every last ounce ou of his ability, that's for sure.

You are right, but he probably shouldn't even be down there taking all those mismatched shots on big guys. Given our size situation, somebody has to get some inside looks. He and Jimmy take them by default.

I could give a hoot about weaknesses that might keep him out of the NBA. For MU, this year, he has few weaknesses, and it is true that stupid fouls is one of them.
