Title: Technical
Post by: mu_hilltopper on February 14, 2010, 11:28:51 AM
Anyone closer to the bench hear what they got T'd up for?

I thought it was because he voiced displeasure over a missed over-and-back.

I thought it was a missed 5 second call.

From our perspective opposite upper deck it looked like Buzz overreacted to try to get the 5-sec call, jumping, screaming, etc. and the ref wasn't in the mood.

Announcers said he must have said "the magic word".  Because his antics didn't seem to merit it.  It WAS during the trap when Buzz wanted a five second call.

It should have been a five second call.  Buzz was jumping multiple times right in front of the ref.  He just crossed the line. Buzz and the ref were talking about it for a long time after.

Definitely five seconds.  Just look at the tape.  After the stop of dribbling the clock ran off six seconds.  Might I add we didn't even get a makeup call after it either.  So they miss the call, give  Buzz a "T" for being right, and no makeup call?

Nice.

Yeah.  There was a great opportunity for a makeup call on our next possession with Buycks in the lane.  I think Buzz continuing to jaw at the ref after the T probably contributed to not getting the makeup call.
All-in-all it's in the books with a W.

It could have been a 5-second call.  Could.  First, the ref seemed to be counting a bit slow, but then as he was counting off "four," he somewhat hesitated... why?  I didn't take a stopwatch to the tape, but it did seem USF got more time on that play than MU got on the inbounds play near the end.

Any way, the 5-second was a borderline no-call.  HOWEVER... watch the tape again, there was an obvious call the ref did miss: traveling.  The pivot foot slid across the ground the length of the guy's shoe.

The inconsistency of the officiating in the BEast just kills me.

Just watched the game on my DVR, the traveling is obvious.  At the BC, it sure seemed like the longest 5 seconds never called.

Talk about traveling, check out Acker's break away layup.  Did he take 4 or 5 steps?  LOL

Yeah, MO got away with the NBA three step to the hoop.

I was happy Buzz got the T - was hoping for an McGuire make up call in return when it counted at the end if the game.

However, I did notice that Buzz didn't cover his mouth with his hand to presumably curse in objection ( so people can't read his lips).

I was about 10 rows behind the MU bench last night, and my initial reaction was that Buzz got it for being out of the coaches box. Ridiculous call by a ridiculous official in Driscoll (second worst official in the BE IMHO after Higgins) if that was the case.

sorry if i missed it, but i haven't seen any comments on it.  buzz had a legitimate beef-we had the usf dude coralled at the 50 for what seemed like a tv timeout for the turnover early in the game.  newbie reff wanted to assert himself.  buzz didn't let it go either and i believe came close to getting an early trip to a post game meal.  i'll bet the reff told him he might have missed that one but just chill and i'll foul out one of their big dudes for ya later :-X

Corralled at the 50?  Are you referring to half court?

Got it.  Anyone remember Crean getting a technical?  He was always playing grab ass with the officials trying to get calls our way.  Seriously though, don't remember him ever getting a technical...

Yeah, big time travel.  No way a 5'8" guy gets to the bucket from the free  throw line without traveling

the thing i liked about the whole play was that after the T, Buzz still appeared to make sure the ref knew he thought he was right.  I like the way he didnt back down. He certainly wasn't going to get kicked out for that, and all too often you see coaches sort of smugly shrink back after a T, which definitely sends the wrong message.

I think that is why he was called for a technical. In fact, after a later break in play he was still asking the referee for an explanation and you could see the guy gesture at the coach's box.

I want to say he got one at ND in his the three amigos soph year here, wasn't it when Lazar got fouled hard and Dominic stepped in to push the guy off Lazar?

I was there and I am fairly sure that is what happened...anyone have better details?

Unless you have a bionic eye, it's impossible to pinpoint when the dribble stops and the steps begin on a fast layup or breakaway.  I didn't replay Acker's breakaway, and I already deleted the game, so I can't comment on how obvious it was (or not).  But I will say that situation rears itself probably two or three times every game on average, and 95% of the time, the referee doesn't make the call because he cannot definitively determine if a travel actually took place.  Even in slow motion, it's difficult to make some of those calls.  Bottom line... traveling on a fast break is a judgment call, period.

Dragging the pivot foot, on the other hand, is a very easy and objective call to make.  Once the player starts to pivot, he cannot move his pivot foot.  There isn't any judgment to be made there... either his pivot foot moves or it doesn't.

You guys are pissed about not getting a make-up call? I like Buzz a lot, but I don't like how animated he gets when something doesn't go his way. I think he has gotten better but I want a coach that is calm no matter what and shows it for his team. Obviously, you still assert yourself but I think he could do it in a better way, IMO.

Watching the Buzz show this week, Buzz is talking about the T .. his claim is that he got T'd up because he was jumping up and down.  That he didn't say anything to the ref.

He closed with..  "I'm not sure that jumping up and down warrants a technical."
