Not exactly new for them. Wainwright recruited Cully Payne in 8th grade and got him to commit before he started freshman year. Didn't work out and Payne ended up de-committing before eventually ending up at Iowa.
Nothing unusual about this at all. I believe Dion Waiters (incoming freshman next year) called Boeheim when he was in 8th grade and gave a verbal commitment.
See Tom Crean & Jon Scheyer.
Um...why is the AD commenting on the recruitment of an unsigned player? I am pretty sure that is a no-no.

Schools are allowed to comment to state that they are recruiting a player as long as they don't provide any evaluation of the players talent(NCAA Bylaw 13.10.2). Reading JLP's quote, it doesn't look like she's making any comment about his abilities, so it wouldn't appear to be a violation of that.
Also there's some gray area about what applies since he hasn't yet started 9th grade.
Some kid who plays football in Delaware was offered a scholly by USC. The kid verballed a comittment and he is only in 7th grade. I know its not basketball.

Yuck...I can see someone on the coaching staff doing this, but the AD? Way to know the rules.

See Tom Crean & Jon Scheyer.
Just to clarify, Tom offered Jon a scholarship when Scheyer was in 8th grade?

If I recall correctly, Scheyer was offered just before he started high school. He attended an MU camp that summer and Crean offered him then.
T-Cubed was at Longfellow Middle School recruiting Jerry Smith. How did that work out?Smith eventually didn't dig Crean or the horse he rode in on. Funny, since Jerry wanted to go to a Big East school, but it had to be within driving distance since his mother is fearful of flying.

Top 3 reasons Jerry Smith didn't come to Marquette1. Dominic James
2. Wesley Matthews
3. Jerel McNeal

DePaul really just needs to clean out their entire athletic department.
Are you certain? Smith certainly hasn't avoided backcourt competition at UL. Besides, he could have played in Crean's four guard offense. We all know there were no big men to compete with.

Louisville hasn't exactly been chock full of backcourt studs the past few years.
Instead of going against James, McNeal and Matthews, Smith has gone against the likes of Andre McGee, Edgar Sosa, Reginald Delk, Kyle Kuric and Chris Smith.
Not quite the same thing.
As for four-guard lineups .... does Smith get minutes ahead of Lazar the previous two seasons?
Thought not.
