"TO ALL THE USF FANS WHO CONTINUE TO ASK AND COMMENT ABOUT THE GAME- WE PLAYED IN 1 OF THE HARDEST PLACES TO WIN-I DIDNT PLAY WELL BUT IM GOOD FOR A BAD GAME EVERY 10- BUT NOW WE ARE IN FULL EFFECT- AND I GUARANTEE 4 MORE BIG EAST WINS IN A ROW- COPYRIGHT THIS QUOTE FROM JONESBOY ENT"
Marquette fans, let's bring it Saturday night.
Should be a good game this weekend :) Hopefully our guys get their hands on this quote (of course they will since Coach Buzz spends all day reading these boards). It'll provide our team with a little extra incentive to go out and whup USF :)
Buzz will get a big blackboard for this.
Well, technically, he didn't say 4 wins in a row starting Saturday
BTW, did you break any copyright laws by quoting him? He did say "copyright"!

At least none according to my Marquette Business Law course education ;)
Who's gonna guard him?
what a hype
Cooby will be on him and will harass the hell outta him

He's a 6'4" guard that they're thinking might to go to the NBA this season (early 2nd round as far as projections go). He's not a shooter... which is too bad because with his quick first step and nice moves in the lane Acker won't be able to handle him. Cubillan would be my guess only since I haven't seen DJO or Buycks pick up a marquee player on defense yet and I don't know if Buzz would waste Butler or Hayward on perimeter defense while leaving nobody in the lane.
What is "Jonesboy Ent" and why is the author so concerned about copyright?
Could this be an athlete seeking to profit from his basketball scholarship in some way while still an amateur?
I love coobie to death, but if he guards him one on one, I feel like coobie will have 3 fouls before halftime.
If Gilchrist plays and is effective, defensively, we seem to be in a little trouble against USF. Butler and Hayward will have to guard gilchrist and famous, giving up a ton of height as usual, and it'll be pick your poison between acker, cooby, DJO and Buycks trying to stay with Jones. I think it might be a similar situation to guarding Mcalarney last year, where buzz just had someone face guard him at all times and try to deny the ball. Buzz has had a full week to game plan, so i'm sure he'll come up with something effective.

Yes please.
Kyle McAlarney, G 40 3-12 1-6 2-2 0 3 3 0 0 2 1 9
On paper South Florida should win this one by at least ten points. They are bigger and faster than Marquette. The Golden Eagles do not have anyone to match up well against USF's inside players or NBA ready Dominique Jones. This could be the easiest game of the month for the visitors. Lets not be rude fans on these message board or in the stands.

McAlarney is slow and didn't threaten anyone when trying to take someone off the dribble. Unless he was holding up a picture of his mom first.

Onward to righteousness! Cura personalis!
Jones blowing by the guards and Hayward fouling is my biggest concern. This is kind of a scary game, but Buzz has had time to crunch stats for a week. DJO, Buycks, or Cadougan need to make Jones work by driving when being guarded by him. Should be a good matchup with DJO and Jones if they go head to head.
We give up tons of height, but their bigs wont be able to keep Jimmy out of the lane or deal with Hayward's versatility any better than the other bigs we have played.

Anyone else wonder how his mom managed to afford being at every damn Notre Dame home game? Well, probably boosters, but still.

agreed. But if you face guard and don't let him get the ball, he can't drive by you.

Please tell me you are kidding.
South Florida is mediocre offensively and defensively and they are playing on the road. They have some good players, but who doesn't in the BE?
Respect your opponent, but respect your own team too. Marquette is an elite offensive team playing at home.

Here's my guess: they saved and saved to pay for his college education, and then when he got a scholarship they were sitting on a big pot of money. I've known kids who got full scholarships whose parents found themselves in this situation. Some got cars, some got cash, and some just had very happy parents with six figures of "found" spending money.
If you saved $100,000+ for your child's college education and he (or she) got a basketball scholarship, wouldn't you go to every game you could? I would. Even at $1000 per game, you'd have money to spare.
I hate to be a turd in the puchbowl, but I am going to go out on a limb and say the above scenario is probably not what happened.

Very true. But that can lead to back-door cuts and "scrambling" to recover and then we pick up dumb fouls.
I've always enjoyed watching guys take pride in denying their man the ball, but I'm not sure if we can do this against Jones. But I think it will be important to make him really work on the offensive end so he starts to take chances defensively.
Well one thing that stood out at me looking at USF is that they are a TERRIBLE 3 pt. shooting team, shooting 29% as a team, which is near the bottom of D1. We can sag in the middle, help with Famous and Gilchrist, keep Jones out of the lane and not have to worry too much about them hitting open jumpers.
Any time a player or anyone associated with an organization makes a prediction of winning they only place more pressure on themselves. We know we can win, I don't think we need to convince anyone of that. Maybe the guy is trying to motivate the team, I don't know. Talk talk talk. Play the game and prove it. I hope that dude gets shut down Saturday just for being an idiot.

Good analysis and I completely agree with your rationale, but have we played zone all year? You think we would given our lack of height inside...
Are some of you really debating how parents get tickets to watch a son theirs play?
Riiiiggghhht...because I am sure our players parents line up at the ticket window and pay of their own.
Pot, meet kettle.

Buzz has stated that without serious ball pressure we will get killed inside with easy passes to the post. Thus, I think Buzz is concerned that a zone will allow for easy passes to the middle. The only consistent zone we played all year is when Yous manned the top of a 1-3-1. Presumably, his height was there to disrupt easy post passes.
Tickets, no. Travel and accomodation costs though?
McAllarney was from Staten Island if I recall.

I'm glad I'm not the only one shocked at how many people are giving USF the upper hand in this one. Do I expect a blowout? No. But I do expect Marquette to win this one.
Pomeroy sez 83% change we win, and has us winning by 9 points. Sounds pretty close to my expectations too. MU wins this game at home at least 4 times out of 5...
I expect MU to win, and I don't think it will be particularly close.
Facts, smacts, you can prove anything with numbers, 78% of all people know that.

We lost to DePaul.
USF is talented, and has won some tough games.
This wont be an easy W for MU.

I wasn't talking about tickets, either. I was responding to a question about how they could afford to have her at all the games. I provided a very plausible, albeit boring, explanation. Apparently Richard Shaw thinks something else was going on. JWags suggested that boosters paid her way. I have absolutely no idea (and I suspect neither Richard Shaw nor JWags do either), but I was making the point that some parents save a lot of money for their kids' education and if they end up not spending that money on education, they spend it on other things -- like going to their kids' games. Hell, maybe they're wealthy; maybe they won the lottery; maybe they robbed a bank. I can think of many explanations for how they can afford trips to South Bend.

Listen, "easy" games are hard to come by in the Big East. I'm even acknowledging there's a chance we'll lose. I'm just saying....if we lose, it'll be the outlier case, not the norm.
MU is also talented, and has won (and lost) some tough games. Thanks for all the sports cliches though ;D
I most certainly think we should and will win this game. I just think with 2 good post guys, in addition to jones, USF may be our toughest matchup defensively. Pitt doesn;t really have a very good post player, louisville only has samuels, and notre dame is pretty much the same team as last year, with abromaitis taking mcalarney's place. I think the only way we lose on saturday is if we get in foul trouble or we have an off day shooting...pretty much the only reasons we lose games.
I really do think we win out at home.

Actually, it's only 14%.
So if he guarantees 4 wins in a row does that mean he isn't so sure about that fifth game against Providence?
I think he was referring to the 4-game winning streak ended by the ND loss, which would imply a guaranteed win this weekend.

She was a picture, wasn't she! And why, oh why, did all of the directors/producers continually cut away to fan reaction shots of her?
Got to agree - Tulsa Warrior what are you thinking? Do you realize we have lost by double figures exactly ZERO times in 23 games this year, and we've played some of the biggest teams in the country already. Florida State, which is the biggest, Syracuse ON THE ROAD which certainly has better bigs than South Florida. They are hot, but the teams are virtually even overall, and every computer model has MU winning, albeit some in very close games.
Tough matchups yet, but predicting a double digit loss? Maybe it's the game we finally go stone cold from behind the arc, but short of that I don't see it. They are one of the worst teams in the country at defensive rebounding (allowing opponents to grab 34.5% of their missed shots) and they aren't in the top 100 in rebounding, so I don't see the inside dominance. They can't hit a trey to save their life (one of the few teams under 30% for the year), while we are first in the country again.
So basically there only two strengths are they are great at stealing the ball (but we protect the ball very well), and they can get to the hoop and draw fouls or score. The latter is a big concern, but all-in-all we can certainly pull of a huge win in this game even if Dominique scores 30.
Jones has a pretty big head.
"I'm a big history guy," Jones said, "and what I am focused on now is winning and getting into the tournament. If I help get South Florida into the tournament, then 20 years from now when South Florida is ranked No. 1 in the country, people will look at the history and say, 'Dominique Jones started that program.'"
