Title: Random question about our court
Post by: Secret of the Ouse on February 04, 2010, 07:03:21 PM
I'll watch most college basketball games when they are on and have noticed that almost every court I see has the womens 3 pt line and the mens 3 pt line.

Is Marquette the only home court with only the mens 3 pt line?

Random question, but I was jw because I can't remember seeing another court with only the mens line.

Gtown and if you count the wachovia center for nova... I'm sure I'm missing a few.

The interesting thing is that the main court in the Al only has one line as well--no men's line.  At first, I thought it might be that it is so light that you can't see it in most photos.  But here's a video that shows Fulce at Marquette Madness showing just the single 3 point line pretty close up.  There is only one line painted on the court at the Al:

And here's a still photo:

So  . . .
a) do the men not practice in the main gym given the lack of a regulation 3 point line?
b) is there another floor that gets put in place for mens' practices (seems like a huge amount of labor)?
c) do the men practice using a non-regulation court and ignore the fact that the 3 point line will be different in real games?

there's a separate practice court deeper in the facility. Also, for madness two years ago, they came out with measurement tools and laid a men's line in tape for the event.

I know there is a separate court . . . I'm talking about the main court.

I'm wondering if the men ever practice on the main floor.   And if so, do they just ignore the difference in distance?

It's not THAT much deeper.  It's about 50 feet to the right of that picture.

In videos it looks like they just ignore it. And knowing Buzz I would bet he doesn't have the team working on threes.

Right, the practice gym is on the same level as the regular court behind the wall the the arena with the championship banners.  The three point line in the practice gym is the men's distance.

Wow, I'm guessing that ball machine is how Acker perfected his 3pt shot from the top of the arc?

Funny though, notice there's a ball stuck between the rim and the backboard.  I guess that's when practice stops  ;D
