Title: Absolutely Pathetic Play
Post by: willie warrior on February 03, 2010, 08:16:17 PM
Glad we won, but:
Blew a 26 point lead down to 10 to 12.
Acker threw up a ton of bricks--1 for 9. He and Cuby were 2 for 14. Let Cadougan play. There is no need for both Acker and Cuby playing at the same time. Acker and Butler are huge defensive liabilities.

50 plus fouls in the game.

Clearly pathetic!

Fran had it right.  MU should have milked the clock a little bit.  Poor shooting early in the shot clock (our guards were very much guilty of that) and lackluster defense gave DePaul that second wind to crawl their way back.

Crazy that 53 fouls were called considering they weren't calling hand checks (on either team) for nearly the entire game.

Complete failure on our part to make them pay for pressing with easy baskets.

Ugly.  Packed it in once they got the huge lead, then no effort to close it out and match DePaul's intensity when they put on the press and gave it their all.  Hopefully a good learning experience - glad Buzz kept the starters in until the buzzer and made them suffer through it.

You know, you don't have to post this after every game (win or loss).   It's going to happen, we already know how you feel, and Buzz doesn't care about your opinion.

I disagree with WW 99% of the time.    The last 10 minutes, we got away from what got us our huge lead, quit playing D with our feet, settled for first available shot, Mo and David were having terrible nights and didn't adjust by getting into the lane (it was there every time) and giving it to somebody who could score.      But sometimes it is hard to stay focused with a big lead.   Our focus wandered and we saw what happened.

Cadougan should not be playing. I understand why people wish he is playing instead of Acker and Cubillan, but MU would be a much worse team if he were seeing more minutes at this point. When he came in in the second half he looked scared when he had the ball because DePaul was doubling the ball. He didn't look comfortable and looked like a turnover-waiting to happen. On defense he is completely lost. His man when off a down screen near the DePaul bench and ended up on the other side of the court while Junior stood their lost and guarding no one.

Now I hope he becomes a great player for us in the future, but he is NOT close to contributing to this team this year. He doesn't have any confidence with the ball in his hand and is slower than everyone on the court.

With that being said, ugly stretch for MU, but glad we got the WIN. A Big East win is a Big East win. Good job fellas.

Go MU!

Patience.   He isn't supposed to light the world on fire.   He is supposed to learn, get in game condition, learn, give the other guys a rest, learn, maybe give us a spark as the season goes on, and learn.

No you're right, I completely agree. I'm just saying at this point during the season, people have got to quit expecting him to see consistent minutes. When people say he should be playing over Acker and Cooby it really makes me angry because they have been doing a fine job this season. They just happened to have a rough night tonight. On to Providence ...

This above is a strong statement to make, but I cannot say I disagree with the a majority of the opinion expressed above.  I do feel that by March Junior will look a little more like the player he was thought to be.  All the veternan posters here seem convinced that JR will definitley be the starting Point Guard next year, but I do question if athletically he'll be as dynamic as a Reggie Smith?

Was this post meant to be in teal?

The game was over eight minutes into the second half. Anything that happened from there on out was meaningless. To whine and complain about anything that happened from there on out is ridiculous.

Willie seems like the kind of guy who would win the lottery then gripe about having to open a new bank account.

Absolutely pathetic post.

Overall this was a blowout.  Up 13 at the half and doubled that by 8 mins in to the second half.  Sure it was not pretty and we let them get a few at the end but this was never a contest.  Start getting ready for Providence - they will be ready for us.

Just in case you are having trouble waiting, I'll give you a preview...a couple of our point guards suck and shouldn't be playing at the same time.  I'd name them, but I don't want to completely spoil the surprise.

On a positive note:  It was great to see EWill having 2 great defensive possessions in a row without fouling.  His defense on a baseline drive got me all hot and bothered.

7 minutes with no fouls and 4 rebounds (1 offensive), along with getting to the line (although he missed the front half of a 1 and 1, is good to see.  Hopefully he continues to make progress!

I was also happy that he took the open jumper in the second half. Granted, he missed it, but I can't help but think he'll be making more of those than missing in the future.

Cadougan looked pretty awful in his limited 2nd half minutes last night (I missed the 1st half).  They started pressing around the time he went in and he couldn't handle it at all.  Was definitely not ready to contribute last night.

Junior looked a little better in the first half.    Not great, but adequate for a 2-3 minute stretch.    In the second half, it looked like he had not faced a press in a long time and was not sure how the MU press break worked and where his outlets were.    I think Buzz mentioned they hadn't practiced their press break offense this week.

One good sign is that MU made 20-22 free throws over the last 7 minutes of the game.  36-44 for the game.

Downside..after giving up 19 points in the first half, they gave up 50 in the second.  44 of DePaul's points came in the last 13 minutes of the game.

I'm finding all of this talk about Jr getting more playing time very amusing...first off, as several people have already said, Jr did not look good in his limited time.  He was slow, tentative, and didn't look like he wanted the ball in his hands [which is a pretty serious issue considering, as a team, you want everything to run through your pg]...there's no doubt that he has the tools to become a very effective contributor, but the kid is coming off a major injury and clearly isn't ready to contribute big minutes.

Furthermore, Acker and Cubillan have been playing fantastic this year...you can bash them all you want for being small and / or limited in what they can do because of their size, but they have stepped up and become big-time leaders for this team.

Lastly, during our pre-conference schedule there were several posters (myself included at times) who felt that Buzz wasn't doing enough to get E-Will, Otule, and Mbao (after his suspension) enough game experience and the argument from others was that they learn better and condition more in practice sessions...shouldn't the same apply here?  Especially considering that we are now IN conference play???  Jr is a liability in gameplay right now and it is more important that he get his wind and confidence back in practice sessions...

my two cents...

The original poster may lose some credibility since he posts like this after every game, and has an agenda against our two Senior guards, but I don't think its a stretch to say we looked pathetic at times last night.

I thought our effort was weak for 30 minutes. We continued our bad habit of allowing the ball to drop on the defensive board and having guys break before we control it. We got beat on a lot of hustle plays. We allowed their pressure to disrupt us, which shouldn't happen to a team playing six guards. We went three very, very, very long stretches without a FG. It was clear we weren't "clicking". All in all, one could call it pathetic play (and I did a couple times last night).

Now, I should say that I think DePaul is such a terrible team that they rub off on their opponent and the other team never gets in a rhythm (i.e. Cuse) which would explain why we've looked our worst against them in both games.
