Title: Last ten minutes
Post by: nyg on February 03, 2010, 08:15:40 PM
Not to be a "doomer", but good grief what happened the last ten minutes.  Up 26, then Depaul got it to within 11 with 2:00 minutes to go.  Ends up an 11 point game.

MU had one field goal, a break away from Cubes, in last ten minutes.  ONE basket.........  In final TEN minutes.......

Thats terrible, even in a foul ridden, ugly game.  Win is a win, but jeez....  Close these games out...

They weren't hitting their shots AND they weren't working the clock down.

To boot, the other team has a dominant big man patrolling the boards and a spot-on three-point shooter (in Walker).

The FT was ALMOST too painful to watch. Great that the team hit them when it counted as DePaul slowed the game down.

I know Walker always has big games against us, but calling him a spot-on three-point shooter is quite a stretch.  He's at 32% this season and I'm pretty sure he was below 30% heading into our first game.  Shot 1-9 tonight.

FTs:
Depaul 19 of 29
MU      36 of 44

Wow

You are right Koshwal is a nice, big presence being wasted on a terrible basketball team.  If only.......

Most posters over on the scout board think we don't need big men, therefore it must be so.

Those 44 free throw attempts could have been at least 54.  What a bunch of hacks DePaul are.  Nearly every inside play save a few legit blocks were a hack by DePaul.  We should have just hacked them right back and we would have won by 25+ with their poor free throw shooting.

DePaul just makes the game ugly.  I know we had these stretches without scoring a field goal (certainly emphasized by the ESPN2 graphics) but when you are hacked nearly every time down the floor it is not easy to score.  They make Huggins' West Vriginia team look like the Badgers in the foul column.

7 players > 6'6 next year.   We will be on the plus-side of as many matchups as we are on the negative.   Sometimes, athleticism wins.

DePaul just makes the game ugly.

God-awful ugly.  Each game was hard to watch.  I understand that this is what they think they have to do to keep in games but watching DePaul is just torture.

"7 players > 6'6 next year.   We will be on the plus-side of as many matchups as we are on the negative."

The lineup for the majority of the minutes next year will be:
Cadougan
DJO/Buycks
Blue
Butler
Fulce/Otule

Who will we be on the plus-side of in the BEast?

Wow, Nostradamus, since you can predict with such certainty the starting line up a year from now, what are the winning lottery numbers going to be tomorrow?   Buzz says in a perfect world he would like a 9 1/2 man rotation.    I am pretty sure you can throw EWill and Crowder in there, too.   Which means 5 players in the rotation 6'6 or taller.   Not perfect, put not chicken little time, either.     We will still have matchup issues with Syracuse-style widebodies.   Who doesn't?   So we had better pressure their guards.    Oooooh, look, we have 6 athletic guards and 5 athletic wings to choose from.

My favorite part of the last ten minutes was everyone leaving as DePaul kept inching back into the game.

This goes double for the student section, which was pathetic in the first place, and even worse for a game being televised on ESPN2.

Hope the selection committee wasn't watching the last 10 minutes.

Please, go be a "fan" of some other team. You've been bitching non-stop since Crowder commited yesterday. We get it, you think Buzz should have gotten someone taller. Get over it.

Good grief.
Not just you, but this thread.

The. Game. Was. Over.

This is like watching your football team take a 31-3 lead into the fourth quarter than gnashing your teeth that they were outscored 10-3 in the final 15 minutes.
Who the heck cares? The game was never in doubt at any moment of the second half.

And, yeah, I heard the committee, in addition to looking at RPIs, SOS, record in the final 12, etc., is also weighing heavily this year the all important "performance in final 10 minutes of 26-point blowouts".

Can we ratchet down the rhetoric about how this team is a horrible FT shooting team?  I will give you that they can miss some at key times, but they are #2 in the BE and #25 in the nation at the line with 74%.  They are not as bad as everyone seems to think they are.
