Title: Conference Schedule
Post by: mrr1981 on February 01, 2010, 10:10:59 AM
Is there a pattern or logic to the repeat games in the conference schedule?  Since joining the Big East, our repeat games have been:

05-06:  DePaul, ND, Pitt
06-07:  Prov, Pitt, L'ville
07-08:  ND, Seton Hall, L'ville
08-09:  'Nova, DePaul, G'town
09-10:  DePaul, Prov, 'Nova

I thought I remember when MU first joined that repeat games would be based on past rivalries/geography, though it seems somewhat random now.  I suppose since each team plays everyone at least once, it's not a big deal.  However, with all the RPI talk lately, it got me thinking of the difference an extra game against a quality opponent (Syracuse) vs. a less quality opponent (DePaul) would make.

Just Curious.

Traditional rivalries and geography are a factor but the more important consideration is that each team has double opponents that are considered top third, middle third, and lower third of the conference.  Obviously this is not an exact science, but if you look at your list and where those teams finished the prior year that's generally how it shakes out.
