Allow me to chime in with my thoughts here. I have a buddy who just loves Roy Williams. So we argue all the time. My typical argument with him is, real hard to cheer for Kansas and UNC. Kind of drives me nuts, but anyway.

I always tell him Roy doesn't have some special X and O ability that other coaches do not have. He's coached at 2 of the premier programs in America and has the best talent. We're seeing this year how human he is. He lost a ton from last year, and still has really good talent, just really young.

I don't mean to minimize the impact coaches have. Obviously some are better than others. But basically, hoops is hoops. Teams run the same plays, etc. It's mostly who executes them better.

Don't really know what my point is...in conclusion I'm just glad to see him struggle for once.

It was nothing close to a game, but I remember hearing the team gained some confidence after their performance in the "scrimmage" at UVA last fall.

No doubt about it though UVA is playing some very good BBall.

Roy Williams is the one who perfected and thought up the idea of the secondary break. The man is an amazing coach.

I did leave that part out of it, and you are correct. That's why my friend is a big fan of his. But my point still stands...he's human. He doesn't have the horses this year (or the horses are too young), and he's at the bottom of the ACC.

Bennett doing a nice job at UVA....so far.  Way too early to tell if he's the guy long term.

Au contraire, mon frere, if what you call the "secondary break" is what I think it is, Coach Eddie Hickey (Creighton, Saint Louis U, and Marquette) beat Coach Williams to the punch by decades.  Coach Hickey devised and ran what he named a "controlled fast  break" in the fifties.  "Easy Ed" Macauley from SLU really made the "CFB" work (great rebounder and scorer) and helped Coach Hickey achieve success with it. So much so, that MU hired him away from SLU.  Don Kojis, Walt Mangham, "Jelly" Glazer, and Mike Moran all helped Hickey achieve some initial success when he introduced the CFB idea to Warrior basketball.

Impressive insight into the old days?  True.  But completely wrong on the notion that what Hickey came up with and what Williams teaches are the same thing.  In fact they are very different.  That's what made William's idea so revolutionary, because it wasn't following the traditional fast break method from Hickey that people had been teach for years.

That is correct, I believe it is also known as the Carolina break. Here is where you can get a dvd on it. Oh, you may just want to check the link to see where the video was filmed. Made me laugh. http://www.basketballcoach.com/cgi-bin/basketball/basketball-dvds-videos/p/Roy-Williams-Secrets-of-the-North-Carolina-Secondary-Break_BD-02426.html (http://www.basketballcoach.com/cgi-bin/basketball/basketball-dvds-videos/p/Roy-Williams-Secrets-of-the-North-Carolina-Secondary-Break_BD-02426.html)
