Title: If we go dancing.....
Post by: tower912 on January 31, 2010, 06:04:24 PM
I think I would prefer to get in as a 10-11-12 seed rather than an 8-9 seed.  To get in, we have to get to 20 wins.     After what we have faced this year, what 3-4-5 seed do you fear?    Nova is working toward a 1-2, Wiscy is working toward a 3-4-5, ditto G-town and W. Virginia.     We shouldn't be afraid of any of them on a neutral floor.    Might we lose?    Yup.      But they'll have to earn it.    And if we get in as a 10-11-12 seed, we could have an easier run to the sweet 16 than we've had lately.          Now, we just have to get in.  :)

Nobody will want to play a team that shoots 45% from 3 in the tourney, at least we'll be a scary match up to a high seed.  Good point though, one upset and we basically take there spot.

I'm taking us to cover no matter the match up.

Good post Tower - I hadn't thought about it from your angle.  It would be almost better to be a 10-12 seed, instead of say an 8 or 9, as if you do win your first game - you play #1 in the 2nd round.  And, as you mention - there isn't really any 4 or 5 seed that would scare me - given the way MU has played.  MU definitely would be a team NO high seeded team would want to play.

I want to be a 14 seed - we can beat anyone.  Lets take on the big guys first!

I hope we get asked to the dance.  Worrying about who our date will be will come later.

unless we reel off 8 or 9 straight, lose 5 or more, or win the BE conf. tourney, marquette may likely be one of those schools where the players and fans get together on selection sunday to see if they get in.

Al mcguire center party perhaps  8-)

I would take an invite to the play in game at this point if it meant we were in...

I don't think having a bigger upset would have much of an impact on the quality of opponents we play in the rest of the tourney. Maybe for the second round it may have an impact, but beyond that the difference between 6, 7, 8 seed would be will be small. Also, have to factor in other upsets and teams being seeded poorly to begin with. It just depends on which bracket you are put in and the overall quality of it. IMO

Don't believe we can - whether we're a 1 or a 16 - since it's our home court.

Right, the host school cannot play at their own location.  If UWM were to host it then we could, however.

yeah, i dont believe we can either.

which is bush, didn't Nova play their first 2 at the Wachovia center last year?

There's a certain number of games - I want to say 4 - that determines whether a court is considered your "home" court and if you're ineligible to play there.  Nova scheduled just few enough games at the Wach to be allowed to play there, and they weren't the host (St. Joe's was).

I think finishing the remainder season out with 7 wins would make Marquette a lock.  But the seed would be up for grabs.

The NCAA committee rules forbid a host institution from playing tournament games on their home court (which is loosely defined) except in the national semis or finals (e.g. Butler goes to the Final Four this year... Lucas Oil Stadium is considered their home court for tourney purposes even though they don't play a single game there).

Of all NCAA selection rules, the above is pretty much infallible, but there is one other rule that could trump it if a situation ever arose... BYU cannot play at a first round or regional site that plays Friday/Sunday.

So you would need a scenario where BYU is mistakenly seeded into a Fri/Sun pod or regional (which isn't discovered until after the brackets are announced) and the only way to accommodate switching them to a Thu/Sat site would be to place a host institution on their home court.

This is an extremely unlikely scenario and a lot of things would have to happen for this to take place.  Even so, it would be interesting to see what the NCAA would do in such a situation.

In any event, I wouldn't count on seeing MU at the BC after Mar 6 this year.

This is correct, and it is a poor rule.  It takes all the "neutral court" fun out of it to see NC or Duke or both basically at home every year; Nova in Philly; Michigan St in Detroit; Wisconsin in Milwaukee; Illinois in Chicago; ND in Indianapolis; UCLA in LA; etc.  I know they want to put better teams as close to home as possible, but there should be some sort of minimum distance factor involved in the process.

IMO to go dancing with our Jordans on we will most likely have to beat Cincinnati, Notre Dame, and Louisville. Depending on how the rest of their seasons pan out they may be on or around the bubble, which I feel we will be as well. Essentially to eliminate them from the bubble we will need to beat them head to head.
